I just blew up on my first exploration expedition because the big mountain that was far away was really a little hill that was very close.

All i wanted was a picture. I lost two weeks of exploration data for a selfie.

I took down a Thargoid mothership in my SRV but forgot to take a screenshot, so here's a picture of a limpet in case anyone wants to see it.

    I love Lakon’s ships, but let’s face it - they don’t give a shit

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:55 AM PDT

Loose wires everywhere, scuffed floors, and ffs have you seen the back of your seat?! Srsly look over your shoulder - I mean, that's definitely a 2nd hand part. Everything looks like it was sourced out of a scrapyard. Then they started putting it all together and kinda lost interest towards the end

Here's the thing – I don't think Lakon have ever actually finished building a single ship. Not once

And the engines on the DBX sound like a steam train going uphill – huff chuff puff(1). The Type-10's hull has bits that look like they were stuck on with glue for no reason – they don't do anything except make it look even >ugly. And the Type-9 manoeuvres so poorly that you can get stuck into an eternal loop of shame – the turning circle is so huge that you basically just orbit the station you're tryna get to

And yet (this is the controversial bit but I don't even care) there's more charm and personality in a Lakon toilet (which is probably blocked and has no tissue) than in the whole of a swishy swooshy immaculate hairdresser's-fantasy Imperial Cutter. Plus, your Lakon wasn't built by cowering slaves - no, it was built by Jerry and his mate Dave in between their unfeasibly long tea breaks. And all the better for it. Kinda

    (1) Don't get me wrong – I adore my DBX. It's the best little ship in the galaxy and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise (tho maybe not in the DBX, but still)

TIL: When you drop into a Neutron Star's rapid moving rings, you become rotation-locked to them.

At 12.5k LY from Sol and 300k ls from arrival, she's a bit of a doozy, but knowing I've got an ELW with my name it it is an unforgettable feeling.

    The REAL new player experience.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 09:59 AM PDT

Finally, after 17 days, over 1200 jumps (most never discovered, so a sweet 304 million creds when I handed the data in) and 22000 LY, I have arrived at my destination! Didn't find a neutron star until 20 jumps to go, then I got 2 in a row...

Yaaaaaaaaaaaay, how many have experienced this moment, knowing their about to get a corvette/cutter(imperial rank of Duke of course)?

Basic Warnings for Student Drivers on the Neutron Highway

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:18 PM PDT

A bunch of recent posts show that our newest generation of explorers are hearing the Call of the Void. However, there are some important facts you might not know. Please take these to heart, and mention anything else you think is important.

Neutrons Speed Travel. Overcharging your drive by Fuel Scooping the tails gives your jump drive a huge boost in range. The Neutron Highways are ways to get across the galaxy in fewer hops. There is a delightful tool to optimize this: https://spansh.co.uk/plotter

Not for Local Travel. The Neutron Highway doesn't kick in until you head towards the Core. 1000 light years above and below the galactic plane are the two Neutron Layers where there are tons of them, getting denser as you get closer to the Core. Too few neutrons out in our neck of the woods for it to be effective.

Neutron Highway Damages Your Ship. Each boosted jump hurts your Friendship Drive a little bit. After fifteen or twenty jumps, you will actually start to have drive failures. Bring an Automated Field Maintenance Unit or two to fix up the drive along the way. Otherwise you'll need to stop in at Fleet Carriers or independent bases and stations for repairs.

No Fuel from Neutrons. Watch that fuel gauge unless you like hanging out with Fuel Rats. Fortunately most neutrons have a scoopable companion star. Just don't forget and then realize that the companion is 700,000 ls out.

White Dwarfs are not Neutrons. They look pretty, but the boost is much shorter and the Danger Zone much bigger. Don't bother boosting.
