When you boost out of the mailslot with your A graded, engineered Cutter at nearly 500ms, absolutely body an innocent ship dropping all their shields, bring them to 1% hull and get ordered to pay a fine of 100cr out of your 2,658,915,344cr balance.

(Update) The Great Raxxla Potato Hunt has passed 33% surveyed, ~23,000 systems.

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 09:46 AM PST

The Great Raxxla Potato Hunt is a survey of all stars within 200 ly of Sol. It began in January 2020 and is expected to continue into 2021. The goal is to systematically survey the near-bubble region for clues or hints related to Raxxla. These systems are reported to EDSM, but no one has completed a rigorous survey for clues and leads.

To date, 100 CMDRs have contributed, and we have scanned nearly 23,000 systems. Just this week we:

    • Mapped 25 8th moons.
    • Noted 68 Megaships and 10 Capital Ships.
    • Found 8 Crashed Ships, including one with a Thargoid Sensor.

We also passed the 1/3 of systems surveyed milestone! You can see a 3D plot of our search grids and progress here:

Even if you don't want to kill thargoids (or haul), please sign up! :)

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 03:00 PM PST

The number of people who get in the top 25%(and get a double engineered FSD) are based on the TOTAL number of players who sign up!

That means that even if you don't actually want to kill thargoids, just by signing up, you can help out the players who DO want to get it! And vice versa for hauling; if you just want to kill Thargoids, still sign up for the hauling CG; for every three of you who do, one more player gets into the top 25%!

It doesn't take any extra effort, so why not? Help a brother out! :)

Dev Diary 3 delayed to December because UK lockdown #2 affecting reshoots. December will be a cool month, with another surprise for us

We had a little beardie friend, a rescue, for 9 years. His name was Noloben. My SO once told him, when he got excited for his lady friend, to "Turn off your beard!" My T-9 carries the phrase to the stars. I miss him.

    White Dwarf Stars Mini Essay

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 09:00 AM PST

I was curious after encountering my first white dwarf star and noticing the eerie similarity they have to Neutron Pulsars that I had to do research on for a University project at one point. I hadn't heard of a White Dwarf Pulsar being confirmed (but knew they had been speculated about for some time, similar to Black Dwarf Stars though those cant feasibly be confirmed for a few billion years.) so it was interesting to see one in game, so I started digging.

I read through several research articles first explaining the nature of a White Dwarf, it's formation, density, magnetic field, gravitational presence etc. and didn't see mention of pulsars. Though learning about Electron Degeneracy Pressure which prevents White Dwarfs from collapsing (a rough read essentially states that below a certain solar mass, 1.44 solar masses, the pressure that electrons resist being pressured closer together is enough to prevent the star from collapsing. Neutron stars exceed this limit, and combine protons and electrons together into neutrons and are kept alive by Neutron Degeneracy Pressure. This formation of Neutrons is also where they get their name!). In my research however, I winged it and decided to search if White Dwarfs can be pulsars and was pleasantly suprised to find that yes, they can. In 2017 AR Scorpii was discovered to be bathing it's binary neighbor every 2 minutes in high doses of radiation. The magnetic field that fuels this is 10,000 times stronger than anything that can be manmade generated which is 45 Tesla (for reference the Suns magnetic field is 0.0001(T) and this field would be 450,000(T) roughly if the article is to believe. Strong enough to instantly kill you, and more than likely tear your ship into shreds pretty quickly. Not to mention the radiation beams that AR Scorpii has which blast it's neighbor with such ferocity that electrons in the upper layers approach lightspeed!).

Now, AR Scorpii is a White Dwarf Pulsar the first we know of, but from my understanding not all White Dwarfs are pulsars. Similar to how all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares. Now I could be mistaken as I have not encountered other White Dwarfs as of yet in Elite as I am rather new to the game, and dont know if any of the subtypes are stable unrotating, non pulsating variants. But, if there aren't that would be quite an oddity for a otherwise pretty sound game near as I can tell (regardless of the suspension of Disbelief that comes from some of the tech) if there are stable White Dwarfs please tell me, I want to see one!

I love the remnants of Stars, the science behind them is just so interesting! Anyways, hopefully this bit of info will give a bit more life to the game if you're a old head, or if you're new like me, it just adds that extra depth to a already interesting game.

I've never maxed out the number of open missions before, but I just did, and with a Navy level up. From a single single one-way trip, I leveled up to Baron, an then progressed up 43% with the remaining missions.

I realize gankers gonna gank but...

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 10:16 PM PST

Why not help them get the thrills that they crave and ramp up crime and punishment for them? Multiple system APB notification system, no safe harbor anywhere within 100 ly until their notoriety wears off, friends who shelter them on their carriers subject to aiding and abetting crimes, random notifications to bounty hunters of where they are and a method to take on the chase and instance with them etc. Seems like there could be any number of things that could be done to make the lifestyle they choose more authentic. I mean in real life, murderers on the run can't use credit cards or cell phones, have to sleep in hovel cash-only motels...life becomes pretty down-right inconvenient I imagine.

Let gankers gank but make life harder for them. Maybe some will enjoy being on the run, maybe some will get sick of it and stop. If we accept ganking as part of the game why not go all the way with it? In Odyssey if we see them on foot in a station will we be able to just kill them? We probably should be able to.
