    New player discouraged by engineering- is it really necessary?

    I bought this game a while back to play with my gf and we've had lots of fun so far, but I'm not really sure what I should do now. I have a nicely fit Vulture for merc work and an Asp Explorer for mining/explo, but the only way to improve them now is to engineer them. I've read a lot about engineering and I thought I was doing myself a favor by picking up all the materials I get from killing NPCs, but it really seems like that won't make a dent in the huge amount of resources I need.

    I personally don't like to cheese game mechanics, and I haven't really felt the urge to buy Odyssey, so the idea of relogging and picking stuff up on a planet surface seems awful, or relogging and looting the same signature over and over.

    Am I really blowing this out of proportion? Is engineering only bad if you want to max out everything? Should I just play like engineering doesn't exist? For some reason, the idea that I'm not getting the full power out of my ships makes me lose interest in playing. I am really busy with work/school and only play a few hours a week, and I don't want to spend those grinding...

    Thanks for any input yall can give, I like the concept of the game but I feel like my overthinking is ruining it for myself.

    EDIT: I got a lot of great advice and lots of great convo in the replies. Hopefully someone else in my shoes also reads this because I did get a lot of inspiration from the different perspectives. I probably won't try to T5 any of my components (except maybe the FSD), but with all the mats in my inventory and a mat trader I got both of my Vulture's miniguns to T3 so that's pretty sick. I might try one of the high emission signals and try to push them to T4 before I go to the FSD engineer. Definitely can't wait to play again!

    Considering how far in the future Elite Dangerous takes place: Is playing classic music during auto-dock the equivalent of your Tesla playing audio of cavemen beating drums as it parks itself?

    Would it be more realistic to play Party Rock Anthem during auto-dock sequence? Old Town Road? Despacito? Wonderwall? Bohemian Rhapsody?

    Should I be hearing fucking All Star while my Anaconda descends gracefully on a landing pad in a futuristic hanger?

    Bit of a stupid question but after getting one and fully a rating it….. I'm not sure what to use it for. It doesn't do anything good enough to make me choose it over something else, should I just use it around the bubble for style? (This idea does have a nice ring to it)

    Red Emblem Glitch. I've had this glitch since Odyssey launched. I'll sometimes have a bright red emblem despite having no emblem equipped.
