Allow the Golcondans the Freedom of Self-Determination.

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 09:37 AM PST

The next phase in the Interstellar Initiative has begun and includes competing Empire and Federation community goals intended to provide the generation ship Golconda's population with a new home. Of course, many CMDRs will answer the call for supplies and by extension, combat support, in the following weeks. But what most pilots involved in this effort do not understand is that they are merely pawns the superpowers' political games. The Golconda event is simply another opportunity for the oligarchs and despots to exploit the galaxy and its people.

Ideally, the people of the Golconda should have the freedom to choose their own destiny, especially now that their basic needs have been met and survival for the time being has been secured. However, they have been denied this right as their their fate has been left in the hands of 34th century humans, who have been asked to choose between two flawed plans to effect the "rescue" of the Golconda's people.

The Imperial plan, which intends to forcefully resettle these people to a modern, purpose-built planetary outpost, is flawed at its very core. It is Imperial paternalism and despotism at its worst. In essence, it mandates that these people leave their culture, lifestyle, and space-based home behind and accept modern technology and way of life in an unfamiliar galaxy, and one would assume it mandates their acceptance of Imperial values and rule. For instance, the 22nd century world they left behind was likely one in which all forms of bondage, including chattel slavery or indentured servitude, had been abolished. Now they would be asked to accept government sanctioned Imperial slavery, and perhaps be forced into it, as a matter of course? In essence, they would be exposed to the ugly reality of life in the 34th century Milky Way, a reality they ostensibly wish to avoid if given the choice. This plan completely strips them of their basic freedoms and right to self-determination and should be opposed at all costs.

The Federation's plan is less imperfect, perhaps even noble in some respects, but still denies these people the right of self-determination. The Fed plan calls for the construction of an outpost in which the Golcondans will be allowed to live in isolation from the outside world and maintain their 22nd century way of life and technology. Although this plan allows these people to retain their culture and lifestyle, it still denies them the basic freedom to choose their own destiny. If you must support one of these plans, this is the lesser of two evils.

Ultimately, the best solution would have been to allow the people of the Golconda to choose their own fate and hold a shipboard plebiscite. Allow them to vote in favor of the Imperial or Federation plan, or a third option: the opportunity to repair, refit, and resupply their vessel in such a way as to minimize the impact of the effort on the lives of the Golconda's inhabitants. This would enable them to continue their journey and choose a new home for themselves, whether it be a planetary outpost they construct with their own relatively primitive means, or possibly remain aboard the Golconda indefinitely, forever travelling through space at subluminal velocities. And perhaps one day, soon or in the far future, they may wish to join modern society. But ultimately that should be their choice, not ours.

All things considered, I am announcing my personal intention to oppose the Imperial initiative directly, and will attempt to deter any vessels I believe to be active in supporting it. In supercruise, CMDRs will be queried and given a chance to high wake from the system. Should they fail to see or ignore my comms, then I will interdict and take down their shields and hull to the point of near-destruction, at which point my marks will be given a chance to high wake and leave the system once again. Those that fail to do so, question my motives, or leave but return later will be destroyed without hesitation. So, I am not simply destroying vessels to simply satisfy my personal blood lust. I am giving every CMDR I come across a fair opportunity to save their own skin. If any CMDR dies by my hand, it will be because that CMDR chose to not take advantage of the terms I offer.

Those CMDRs who support the Federation's initiative will remain unmolested, by me at least, although I urge you to reconsider and not support either of these flawed plans.

Instead, join me in upholding the basic right of self-determination and association, and denouncing the machinations of the superpowers, who seek to use these people as a means to achieve their own nefarious ends.

Wouldn't more Crew members be fun?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 07:40 AM PST

Anyone else wish the NPC crew members system would be expanded on? This would be more about immersion and making a large ship feel more populated. (Seems silly that ships as large as the big 3 can be completely operated by a single person, right?)

As I imagine it working, depending on the size of the ship, there would be crew slots for certain aspects of a ship: Systems, Engines, Weapons. A crew member could either give extra capacity pips (already functional w/ multi-crew), or a faster recharge rate, in exchange for a % of profit based on their skill which directly correlates to the buff they provide (just like NPC SLF pilots already do).

The fun part would be having voice responses from the crew members as power to their section is emptied (just like NPC SLF pilots already do when they lose shields), or even commenting as you re-distribute power across the ship. Imagine trying to boost with no power in your engines; currently you just get an on-screen message, but this way you could hear something to the effect of "I'm giving it all she's got, commander!"

A Beginner's Primer to Deep-Core Mining in Planetary Rings (wall-o-text version)

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 09:03 AM PST

I wrote this as an answer to a question in a thread but got bored and decided to make it into its own thread:

A BEGINNER'S PRIMER TO DEEP-CORE MINING IN PLANETARY RINGS:

(The "wall-o-text" version. Experienced CMDRS please let me know if I left anything out, thanks.)

For deep-core mining, you need: Cargo space (to hold refined ores and limpets), limpets!, a prospector limpet controller (optional but well worth it), collector limpet controller (or two), refinery, pulse-wave scanner, seismic charge launcher, abrasion blaster and detailed surface scanner. DON'T FORGET TO PURCHASE LIMPETS before leaving the station. FILL your cargo racks with limpets! They are inexpensive, you will use a few before you ever find any ores and I would rather throw limpets over the side to make room for more ores than have to leave to go and buy (or synthesize) more. If you are in a small ship, such as a DBX or Cobra, etc. you will probably not have room for all these toys and so will need to choose compromises. That is why I mine in a Corvette or a Cutter.

As others have noted, deep-core mining in a wing is (currently, as of 11/18/19 - USA format) bugged and your charges might/will explode on impact so, deep-core mining is best pursued alone (and for my money, in SOLO mode).

    How to do it:

First, make sure there is no CARGO INVENTORY in your cargo racks before going mining! Usually, within a few seconds or minutes of entering a ring an NPC pirate will show up and scan your ship. If you have ANY cargo on board, YOU WILL BE ATTACKED! IF you have NO cargo inventory the pirate will whine a little after scanning your ship but will then go away and leave you alone. Pirates ignore materials and data inventories as well as limpets and freshly mined/refined ores but CARGO will get you killed so NO CARGO IN MINING AREAS! If a NPC pirate scans your ship and then starts shooting, YOU BROUGHT CARGO to the mining area, stupid!

On a related note, if you must LEAVE a mining area for ANY reason, go immediately and either donate or sell your ores. If you enter Supercruise (SC) for ANY reason with ores on board they immediately become CARGO and are subject to piracy. This includes entering SC simply to move to another mining area. DON'T DO IT!

Step Two: Find an appropriate ring. I do not have time to explain how to find an appropriate ring, explaining DC mining will take lots of words already and just a little bit of research will help. Use the DSS to map the ring and pinpoint the location of an appropriate hot-spot. Drop from SC into the ring/hot-spot, deploy hardpoints (PWS) and start pinging with the scanner. Hold down the PWS trigger to get minimum pinging intervals from the PWS as you travel through the ring. "Mother-lodes" (ML) glow bright-yellow when pinged by the PWS, sometimes they have green or red edges as well and at certain, medium visual distances will have black lattice-lines indicating fissures, often an indicator of a core. ML of different materials will each have a different appearance so you will need to learn to visually identify the type of mother-lode(s) you are seeking in order to conserve prospector limpets.

Once you find a core ML, hit it with a prospector limpet (PL) to determine the type of material in the asteroid as well as the presence of a core. Sometimes you do not care what material is there but it is worth noting that a prospector limpet, besides showing you what material is present in the motherlode will also double the ore yield of any asteroid to which it is attached. If you are seeking a specific material, keep sending prospector limpets to likely looking candidates until you find a CORE(!!) containing the material you are hunting. They are often not close together and I spend a lot of time thrusting at 100% throttle through asteroid fields, sometimes boosting, looking for ML. It is also worth noting that ML with CORES often occur near the edges of a ring, with open space very nearby.

When you have found your target, approach (if the ML is near open space, approach from that direction), note the location of the fissures (the PL will mark them) and set your seismic charges. Note that the explosive yield of each charge must be calibrated as they are launched to achieve optimal explosive yield and maximize the ore yield of the ML. Keep an eye on the optimal yield indicator as you launch your charges. By holding down the trigger before launching, you can hear each charge "wind-up". Hold the trigger down longer, get a higher explosive yield. Hold the trigger down for less time for lower explosive yield. I usually place two "full-power" charges and one low-power charge. If I overpower a charge (exceed optimal yield), I can disable a single charge by selecting a single charge in Panel #1>Targets and clicking DISABLE, then placing another low-yield charge before the detonation timer runs out. If I am below optimal yield I can simply place another, low-power charge.

Once Optimal Yield has been achieved, BACK OFF! This is why I approach from the open space side if available, so my ship is not trapped/damaged by backing toward another asteroid. Once a safe distance is reached it is not necessary to wait the 30 seconds for the charges to detonate, you can simply select any single charge in Panel #1>Targets and click DETONATE to get a 5-second countdown.

After the explosion, close with the asteroid and release the hounds! (collector limpets or CL). Do not select a target and the limpets will collect everything they find. If hunting for specific materials you will need to go to Panel #1>Targets, select the materials you do not want to collect and click "ADD (material X) TO IGNORE LIST". The CL will then ignore those materials and not clog up your refinery with them. You will probably have to do this several times to make sure the CL are not collecting the various other materials that are always getting collected along with your target material(s). Keeping an eye on your refinery (Panel #3>Inventory>Refinery) will let you know what is being collected and refined. You do not want to clog up your refinery AND cargo inventory with extraneous materials.

There will also usually be surface deposits left sticking to the chunks of the asteroid you just blew up. Target these and blast them off using the Abrasion Blaster (AB) and your CL will collect those as well. Maximum effort, maximum reward.

Once you receive the ASTEROID DEPLETED message, wait for your CL to finish collecting materials before moving on. Rinse and repeat, until your cargo racks are bursting with ores and your refinery is so full it cannot refine any more material. Remember to JETTISON (ABANDON) any extraneous material(s). You want your refinery to be FULL of your target material when you reach a station to sell your ores. If you are just a few limpets short (PL or CL) you can synthesize more if you have the necessary materials in your inventory. This is done in Panel #3>Inventory>Synthesis. Once you have stuffed your ship with ores it is time to sell them and make a few million credits.

I am not going to explain how to find the best price for your ores and again, just a little bit of research will help. Go immediately to your station or base of choice to sell or donate your ores. If interdicted on the way, DO NOT FIGHT, RUN!!! You have little chance of winning any fights against combat-fitted pirate ships in your mining-fitted ship stuffed with tons of ores so learn to evade/escape interdictions and RUN!!! Once you have reached your destination and sold the ores in your cargo inventory, the ores still in the refinery hopper(s) should refine automatically if there is enough unrefined ore to refine so don't forget to sell that, too. Don't forget to buy more limpets before heading back out to earn a few million more credits. o7

    Non-combatant with combat points

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 07:58 AM PST

I have been playing E:D for a few years and have never mounted anything more powerful than a mining laser, let alone actually attack and destroy a ship, yet my combat rank is 92% of the way to "Mostly Harmless." Everything I have read about combat rank says it is gained by killing ships. Unless I managed to destroy multiple ships without being aware of it, there must be something else going on here. The only combat-related things I can think of are...

    • I have successfully evaded many interdictions. The last time I was successfully interdicted was a few years ago in witch space by a thargoid. We played pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey for a few minutes before I jumped away unharmed. I cannot recall ever losing a ship or cargo to an interdiction, but my memory may be fuzzy.
    • I have anal-probed numerous thargoids. Back when they first showed up, I put all my sensors on the same fire group, snuck up behind them to within a few meters of their anal sphincter, then honked them hard with every sensor I had. This didn't seem to have any in-game benefit, I just did it for fun. The 'goids tended to ignore me until I accidentally rammed one in the bunghole and now they always come after me.

Any ideas how I got combat points despite running away from every aggressor?
