    Copilot Insurance!

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:50 AM PST

    From the Beta patch notes:

    • Added ability to rescue any crew that where on board the player's ship when it was destroyed, from the insurance screen.

So when if your ship blows up, you can pay your fighter pilot's insurance and they don't die! I won't lose that pilot I trained up to Dangerous again! Finally!

Let us assume (just for the sake of argument) that Commander X (definitely not me) is catastrophically bad at combat but also wants to do lots of combat…

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:31 AM PST

Don't ask me how I know this, but commander X (who I would like to remind you at this time is not me) is no stranger to the galactic insurance industry. Possibly their favourite customer.

Their combat ability is what you'd expect from a blind, three-legged donkey in space (though the donkey would probably do better). Their main tactic is to spin wildly while firing all weapons at nothing in particular until every single thing overheats. It seldom lasts long.

For example. Commander X just tried this very fine bounty hunting build. They then took on a Harmless bh contract. During the fight they did not manage to fire a single shot because every time they tried the life support shut down and the shields stopped working. Unfortunately that coincided precisely with the times their "target" (who was, and I cannot stress this enough, a single, harmless pirate) fired missiles at them. In around 30 secs Commander X was making yet another visit to the insurers.

That is the level of crapness we're talking about. Do not underestimate it.

What ship and loadout would you suggest to me Commander X (ahem), to make their combat encounters last a little longer? The less need for any skill, aiming, evasion, power management, the better.

On behalf of Player X, thank you

January Update - Beta - Patch Notes

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:37 AM PST

    I LOVE This Game.

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 04:53 AM PST

Just got off work, had a puff, on my way to Colonia in my decked Orca. Scanning, exploring little bits of everything. Plan to sell some data at Colonia, then get out to Sagittarius A. Then off to the other side for a month or two.

A word to the wise: When flying stoned, play stupid mode. Watch your every move. I went off to the side while exploring to have a look at a mollusc. Was baked. Leaned over to grab something, hit boost, smashed into said mollusc, bounced into an asteroid. Blamo! Back to Jameson. 4 months of exploration data. Gonzo. So like the meathead I am, I bought my ship back, got better shields, and back into the black again for 2 months.

I just flew by a massive blue star and had to come in to say hi and share. I'm amazed at this game. The closer I get to the centre of the galaxy the more amazed I get. Simple stars amaze me. I play No Man's Sky off and on but it's not even close.

If you have any tips for what to see when I get into the Colonia area and beyond, let me know. Love chatting to fellow commanders who like messing around out in the black.

I am no screenshot artist, so.....

I really like Elite - was, in fact, Elite in 1984 on my BBC B, and so enjoy what the game has become, especially played in VR.

But while I enjoy the screenshots I see on Reddit and other forums, screenshots from VR are not the same and I have never had one I felt was good enough to post. HOWEVER, I wanted to post something so I decided to go a different way and recently I unearthed my old modelling kit from 35 years ago (I'm 58) and had a few 3D models printed up from the data files that can be ripped form the game, painted them up and photographed them against Elite backdrops.

What do you guys think? Worth the time and trouble or just a frustrated teenager resisting growing old?

Steal diamonds while you hack for data during a heist scenario. There is an easy system right now for this.

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 10:19 AM PST

I don't know how many heard about scenarios happening at megaships and installations, but there is one kind of scenario which has an interesting side effect. This scenario is the heist, and the side effect is that there is a high chance that the cargo bay will change it's contents for low temperature diamonds when the scenario starts. So what you are basically doing is stealing those diamonds before the pirates find them, and then gtfo there before they scan you.

The other thing what you can do is to hack the data points on the megaship or installation. With this you will get data materials for engineering, sometimes you can find high grade data (praying to RNGesus may help).

After you finished you go to a balck market and sell the stolen diamonds for big money. You should check the high selling price stations, since the black market price tied to the normal market price (75%) - so find one good selling point with black market.

And here comes the easy part:

One of the best selling stations with black market for LTD right now is Bounds Hub in the Alrai system. In this system there are also 3 installations. I've checked 2 of them and 90% of the time there is a heist scenario happening after 1-5 minutes after dropping in from SC.

Ecumencial Echo Communications: this installation have 3 data points to hack, and one of them is the hackable comms array. You need 2 recon limpets to hack this, but you will get high grade data from this. There are 2 cargo bays. The downside of this installation is that it is so close to a planet, that when you break into a cargo bay and the containers released, they will start to fall towards the planet instantly, you have to chase them.

Hidden Oak Hacienda: this installation have only one data point to hack, and it's the simpler one so a bit lower chance for high grade data. It has 3 cargo bays, and no planet close so the containers will not float away. You can get more diamonds here but less data.

Once you finished just head back to the station in the system, sneak in (you have illicit cargo, so it's better to not let them scan you), and sell the goodies at the black market. Refill your limpets, repair your ship (sometimes the pirates will attack you), and head back to the installation :)

If you don't really know how to do this properly here is a step by step breakdown of the hacking/looting process:

    1. The equipment you will need to do this: hatch breaker-, recon-, collector limpet controllers, data link-, manifest scanner
    2. When you drop out from SC at the installation select it from the contacts. Use your data link scanner on it and during the scanning move closer to the installation. After the scan finished and you are close enough (depends on your scanner size and grade), you will see additional targets populating your contacts panel.
    3. Select one of the hackable data points from the contacts panel. Move within 350m to it and use your data link scanner on it. After the scan you can select sub-targets of the data point - there will be a sub target(s) named "limpet docking point" - target this.
    4. Fire a recon limpet, and before the limpet attaches to the limpet docking point engage silent running. If you fail to engage silent running you will get a fine/bounty on you. Keep silent running while the recon limpet doing the hacking, if necessary, pop a heatsink.
    5. Wait for the heist scenario to start (maybe it will start meanwhile you are doing the data point hacking). It should start between 1 and 5 minutes after you dropped in from SC. If nothing happening for 5 minutes, then it will not happen. Go into SC and drop in into the installation again to reset the instancing and have another chance to start the scenario.
    6. When the scenario started - there will be a popup style window similar the one in CZ, and a radio message start broadcasting too - find a cargo bay in your contacts tab and head there asap. DO NOT choose any side in the scenario to work for - you are working only for yourself.
    7. Scan the cargo bay with the manifest scanner and data link scanner (for data link scanner you have to be closer than 350m). Check the contents of the cargo bay if there is any diamonds in there.
    8. If there are diamonds in the cargo bay you do the same thing as with the data point hack. Check the cargo bay sub-targets for limpet docking point, but now you will fire a hatch breaker limpet on it. Engage silent running to avoid fines/bounties before the hatch breaker attaches.
    9. Collect the diamonds as you wish (collector limpets, cargo scooping, using the force, telekinesis etc.).
    10. Check the other cargo bays too.

You may want to use silent running the whole time after you got your first diamonds because there will be a lot of pirates who may scan you for cargo and if they found diamonds in your cargo bay, they will start to shoot at you immediately. If you are going silent, they will not see you. So I would recommend a really cool running ship for this task. I built an AspX for this, here is the build: Silent running AspX

This ship's idle heat is 16%, if you engage silent running you can sit in it for 4 minutes till the heat goes up to 100%. When you are moving around and using limpets it's about 1.5-2 minutes before the heat is at 100%. When you pop a heatsink that will give you about 3 additional minutes in silent running.

You will need about 15-20 limpets for one run. After you have cargo you can try to do it again, but it will be much harder, since either the police can scan you, or the pirates in the scenario will scan you. You may want to do the entire thing in silent running in this case, but I advise to return to base after a heist and dump the crago you have.

    Have fun!

So I'm pretty new to the game and I heard the fuel scoop is a must, so I bought it and equipped it. Every time I try to get close enough to a star to use it everything breaks. How do you properly use it?

Anything super interesting to see around Colonia?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 10:46 AM PST

I just recently made my first trip out to Colonia, and I was wondering if there was anything super interesting around Colonia to see before heading back to the main bubble. This is the farthest I have ever been, and I want to see some stuff that's not available closer to the bubble.
