    As a new player ive always wondered why people put Heatsinks on their explo ships. Now I know why after jumping into these 2 stars

    Small step for Elite, but a huge leap for me and my Hauler as a 4 day newbie. Fly safe, commanders and see you on the other side!

    My Son made me a Lego Python for Christmas

    Posted: 25 Dec 2019 07:48 PM PST

    My son(16) free built this python based on a screen shot that I had taken a while back. He gave it to me for Christmas today. I was completely impressed with how close he got to my ship. What a great gift for a relatively new commander!

    So I figured I’d try and contribute. For any other new players like me who are void opal mining I found the perfect example asteroid. Look closely at the shape and coloration as I pulse. Normally this will ensure you find what your looking for.

    The Advance docking computer and Supercruise assist should be a single autopilot module that perform functions of both and much more...

    Posted: 25 Dec 2019 09:37 PM PST

    TL;DR: To improve quality of life, there should be a single Autopilot module that performs several traveling and docking functions automatically (including alignment, planetary entry, requesting docking permissions, etc.) just like the previous game Frontier: First Encounters. For those who don't want it, don't install or use it.

    By way of background, and back in my days of playing Frontier: First Encounters (FFE), CMDR Jameson started out the game in year 3250 with a Saker MK III. But unlike Elite Dangerous, the Saker MKIII comes standard with two fairly important systems, i.e., an Autopilot and a Navigation Computer. The Navigation Computer was fairly primitive but it at least allowed the CMDR to bring up all dock-able stations and planetary bases in the system and select them. This is similar to the Navigation panel in Elite Dangerous albeit with a much more simplistic interface.

    However, in conjunction with the standard Autopilot, this allowed the CMDR to select any dock-able stations and planetary bases from a non-docked location in the system, and then engage the autopilot, which will take over to automatically dock to a selected dock-able station and planetary base. Thus, the autopilot in FFE performed at least the following functions:

    1. automatically align trajectory of CMDR's ship to a selected dock-able station and planetary base;
    2. automatically fly from current location and follow the selected dock-able station and planetary base as it travel's and moves through Newtonian space (FFE had time compression rather than a frame shift drive so the effects of planetary and station movement was greatly amplified when time compression is turned on for traveling);
    3. automatically request docking permission and queue as needed; and
    4. automatically dock with the selected dock-able station or planetary base.

    All the above occurred seamlessly and without any CMDR input once CMDR selects a dock-able station or planetary base and engages the Autopilot. CMDR can either watch it unfold in real-time (not recommended due to great distances between bases) or in compressed time.

    Fast forward to Elite Dangerous. Somehow in year 3300, The universe no longer has an Autopilot module but instead has two different modules with greatly reduced functionality when compared to the FFE Autopilot; namely, the Advance docking computer and Supercruise assist. But neither in combination were capable of performing at least the functionalities of (1) and (3) discussed above with respect to FFE and the Autopilot. In other words, the CMDR still has to manually align trajectories when using the super cruise assist and get within 7.5 KM of a station or planetary base before a docking computer can take over.

    It is unclear to me why this regression occurred, but I suspect from my years of lurking in this Subreddit that there are several reasons ranging from maintaining a sense of scale, simulation, realism to a sense of pride that is given to CMDRs when they manually dock at a station or land at a planetary base. As someone who plays Elite Dangerous 98% of the time with Flight Assist (FA) Off (except landing in high gravity planets) just like it was in FFE, I derive no sense of pride and accomplishment in traveling from point A to Point B and landing with FA Off (or On) in any dock-able station or planetary base.

    In other words, I personally like to think (and some of you may disagree) that there is much more to do in Elite Dangerous than merely traveling from point A to point B and then landing at a dock-able station or a planetary base at point B. But I do not believe that the traveling to dock-able stations and planetary bases should be skipped all together. To the contrary, these aspects should be maintained because they do give the CMDRs a sense of scale and contributes to the overall realism and simulation. But that sense of scale, realism, and simulation can be given without having a CMDR perform these mundane tasks.

    Fortunately, since 3250, this quality of life module already exists, and its called the Autopilot. With such an Autopilot module, all a CMDR has to do is select a dock-able station or a planetary base and then engage the Autopilot module. The CMDR can then sit back and watch the autopilot module perform its functions. Obviously, the Autopilot module cannot automatically land outside of landing pads (e.g., Guardian sites, abandoned bases like Dav's Hope, etc.) and the Autopilot module will also have to allow the CMDR to take over during an interdiction. Furthermore, the Autopilot module can also default to traveling using shipping lanes so if a CMDR wants to avoid interdictions, some manual flying is required. And for those CMDRs who do not wish to use this Autopilot module, they can simply not install it or turn it off.

    In time, I hope this Autopilot module will allow automatic traveling between several systems with a plotted route and would even perform automatic fuel scooping (perhaps at a slower rate with less heat build up). CMDRs who wants to obtain exploration data in a system will still have to fly and perform FSS manually by turning off Autopilot and throttling down in each system. But for CMDRs just passing through or trying to go from point A to point B, this would greatly add to quality of life and even allow more CMDRs to explore regions of our Galaxy they otherwise would not have.

    And I suspect with upcoming space legs, this would even allow CMDRs to explore the interior of their ship during long travels and perhaps free the CMDR up to perform other tasks in their ship while their ship is traveling on Autopilot. During an interdiction, the CMDR can be quickly called back to the bridge/cockpit to take appropriate action.

    As always, I welcome everyone's thoughts and I hope Frontier can at least think about implementing such an Autopilot module into Elite Dangerous.

    P.S., Thank you Frontier for adding the ability to rescue your hired crew members in the upcoming January, 2020 update.

    IT TOOK ME YEARS BUT FINALLY THERE!

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 12:53 PM PST

    I've been playing ED since before the steam release. Buying it in EUROS when i'm in the US! I stopped and started again Idk how many times... but one twinkle in the sky always caught my eye.

    Finally downloading Horizons for 6 dollars i was reinvigorated to take to the stars and finally reached an unrealized milestone. SPICA. I know it's kind of a Newb area but still. It's a big step for me.

    But now i'e lost touch with the community and need some good info and compadres out in the black. if there's a discord for this it would be appreciated if you could link it.

    Keep Flying!
