All players, no matter how casual, should unlock the engineer Felicity Farseer. It's super easy, and the benefits are huge. Here's how.

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 08:38 AM PST

I see a lot of posts from relatively new players, or just casual players who have not yet touched engineering - either because they think the grind is too daunting, or don't have enough info about how to do it.

Well good news, Felicity is the easiest engineer to unlock, and gives you a huge benefit - she does upgrades to thrusters, frame shift drives, shield boosters, and power plants. These are essential, whether you are an explorer, trader, miner, or combat pilot.

Even if you ONLY unlock her, and don't touch anymore engineers, you are still benefiting in a big way.

    Steps to unlock:

    • Get exploration rank Scout - this can be done by scanning a bunch of systems and selling your cartographic data. It doesn't take that many. Once you get the rank, you should have an invite from Felicity in your inbox.

    • Pick your favorite ship that you want to increase it's jump range (make sure it has an A-rated FSD - make some cash to get that if you don't already have it)

    • Install a Wake scanner, and go outside a busy station and use it to scan some wakes (to collect some Atypical Disrupted Wake Echoes - needed for first upgrade for long range FSD). Wakes show up as a white square target, and will say "High Wake" when you select the target. You only need to scan a handful to do one ship - each time you scan and collect, it actually gives you 3 units of each - so scanning a wake you will see a message "collected: wake echoes" and you actually just got 3 units.

    • If you want even more range (to get the FSD upgrade to grade 3), you'll have to collect a little bit of Phosphorous (laser mining asteroids or at planet geological signals), Chemical processors (can collect from exploded ships in combat, Degraded Emissions signals), and Strange Wake Solutions (also from scanning Wakes).

    • Fly to Maia (yes, it's 400 LY from the bubble, but this should be easy if you have an A-rated FSD), go to the planetary port "Darnielle's Progress" and purchase 1 meta-alloy. If you're feeling adventurous, you can get this from ripe Thargoid barnacle forests instead (search for it, I'm not getting into it here).

    • Fly to Deciat, to the planetary base "Farseer Inc" and donate the meta-alloy (under the Engineer Workshop menu). Congratulations, Felicity is unlocked. (I suggest doing this step in Solo, since Deciat tends to be a hot spot for player pirates, and you don't want to lose that meta-alloy)

    • Suggested mods from Felicity - FSD increased range, Thrusters dirty with drag drives (unless you have size 2 or 3 thrusters, in which case drive distributors is the better experimental). Note: for each grade of upgrade, you may have to "apply" the upgrade multiple times to get the "full" grade - it will be obvious once you try it (just apply until the circles are filled out (or at least 75% filled), and the next grade is unlocked).

    • In the engineer's workshop screen, you can hover over any materials in the requirements, and it will pop-up a window that tells you where to find it.

EDIT: grammar + elaboration on applying upgrades

    Dumb idea but..... space radio

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 10:57 AM PST

In the real world the earth felt big until radio showed up. Elite feels empty. What if...

    • Every ship had a radio with different modes.

    • mode 1: Mp3 library or a linkable music streaming service. (Spotify, google music etc)

The following modes are at low bitrates to simulate Fuzzy AM radio voice. Perhaps some crackling and pops added

    • mode 2: CB/HAM like radio band. "Anyone out there?" Open chat anyone can listen in or talk.

EDIT: in regards to sqeakers spamming a freqency with "your mama sucks dicks" where people are having a decent conversation. That commander can be "filtered" (muted) by the people talking or listening. The commander is shown how many times he's been muted. The mute lasts 12 or 24hrs real time on that frequency.

    • mode 3: commercial elite radio band (must apply for licence). Commander gets a dedicated frequency where he or she can broadcast a talk radio station (frontier would have the power to kill a licence). The commander can queue people calling in and has the power to disconnect them or ban them from calling in. Who knows mabey someone can recreate Coast to Coast Am in Elite?

    Radio repeaters

The radio network works within the bubble but the community builds (indestructable) 100ly to 250 ly range repeaters outside the bubble that need elements like nickle, iron etc to keep them powered up at 100% once in awhile. (Gives explorers a thing to do)

Mabey each tower is comprised of 3 parts. A Base, 30 tons worth of cargo space, powerplant 10 tons and antenna 40 tons. Parts can be picked up at stations under contacts (communications officer). Galaxy map shows the location of the antennas and their status. Bulid parts needed, broacasting power and what elements are needed if the broadcast strength is weakening.

    PHONE/TABLET/DESKTOP APP

Elite Radio. An app that allows you to listen to all the chatter outside the game. Also frontire could offer a service to people and or organizations (for a fee) to stream thier radio or pocasts. This would be a separate band in the game.

I know its dumb but I thought I'd put it out there.

PSA: When evacuating passengers at a burning station, please keep the megaship pads clear

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 06:53 AM PST

Especially if you're flying a large ship.

As a friendly reminder, megaships only have 1 large pad. If you sit on a pad in a Anaconda, Beluga or any other large ship, no one else in a large ship can dock, unless they log out to solo or PG. This is particularly inconvenient for AX CMDRs in wings who are restocking mid-fight.

Anyway, carry on with your evac duties. o7

Why I am happy about the mining nerf

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 07:29 AM PST

Yep, going to be controversial. But as a player who has played for a few years now I think (please not that this is an opinion piece) that mining was:

    1. making the game unbalanced;
    2. devaluing Elite status;
    3. creating a group of pilots who can't fly.

I will start with this. If you think that the grind is real now you have no idea. When I first started playing the grind was 10 times worse. We didn't have Horizons at that point so no engineer grind. Mining was very hit and miss. There were no hot spots, no tools to help, no deep core. You only had mining lasers and a prospector/collector limpet as tools. And it was a great way to make money even then.

With the introduction of "easy mining" we got a new class of player who were after the "instant rich". No having to battle through, no having to go from ship to ship and learning to fly. You just got "the path" and within as little as 11 hours you were "ELITE"! Elite is a real thing, it should be hard to get. There was no work involved, you got the ship to the hotspot that you looked up on a third party site, mined for an hour or two, went to a station that you found on another site and bish, bash, bosh. You're Elite.

IMO (again, it's opinion) it is making the game unbalanced. I say this because the number of posts I see, especially since the change in Jan, are mostly about mining. It seems like it's a game of miners, guys out there just breaking rocks for cash, never seeing the universe and never engaging in combat. This brings me to point 3. I see so many posts about people moaning about getting their new Corvette (that they got doing Fed rank jobs while there was a special on points for (another thing that triggers me)) blown up by a guy in a Cobra. Don't get me wrong, gankers are toxic to the game but they have a point. It's not about getting good, it's about being competent. It's about being the sort of pilot that has done more than crack rocks and can fly a Corvette because it has taken a long time to get it.

<Edit>The other area where this is unbalanced is the risk versus reward. A bounty hunter or player engaging in combat for reward will have a high risk and very low reward. Whereas the risk associated with mining is very low but the reward very high. Pure trading is pretty low risk for medium to high reward. Exploration was, and remains, medium risk and medium reward. You can die ridiculously easily in Exploration! Stupidity is a killer. FDEV, for some reason, still think that this is the way it should be, perhaps it sells games? </edit>

If you are annoyed because the easy money is all you've ever known and consider the game broken then I am sorry that you feel this way. For a lot of us old timers this is still a ton better than it was back then. So you need to do a little more homework, surely a "real" Elite is worth that.

I got my trader Elite mining. However only going from Tycoon to Elite was done with deep core and it was 50% there already.

Corvette vs. Cutter is the perfect analog of Star Destroyer vs. Mon Calamari Cruiser [Star Wars]

Corvette vs. Cutter is the perfect analog of Star Destroyer vs. Mon Calamari Cruiser [Star Wars]

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but I couldn't see it on Reddit so here I go.

Everyone knows the Federal Corvette and Imperial Star Destroyer look alike, but now, take a look at this:

Visual comparison of an Imperial Cutter and a Mon Calamari Cruiser

...and visual similarities aren't the only thing.

If you are into Star Wars universe, you probably know a lot about the ships; but for those who don't, let me explain.

The Imperial Star Destroyer relies mostly on superior firepower to win battles. However, (sort of a design flaw) it's guns are heavily concentrated on the top side of the vessel, and the bottom side is a bit weak (relatively, that is). Rings a bell? The Federal Corvette!

Mon Calamari Cruisers (Rebellion capital ships) on the other hand, are a bit weaker in means of firepower; but they compensate with much superior shields. Their shield strenght is one of the best in the Star Wars universe. See the similarities? Imperial Cutter is the very same!

    What do you think?

...I'm sorry...but the haters and the hate diminish the greatness that is Elite: Dangerous, and the human beings who delivered, and you need to stop and imagine what might emerge by doing things differently.

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 08:03 AM PST

I have 2134 hours in the game, from premium beta through to the hour I got in today over at Farseer. I go back to the mid 1980s, yes, on the Apple IIe, but on this version I've gotten my Distant Worlds patch, was among those who sought to escort Salome, been killed by Harry Potter, earned Fed Rank and Imp rank, watched Replicator and Privateers Alliance and the Sovereignty and G-Nation and the KnightCorps play on Twitch, and am Elite in everything but combat (Dangerous). I role play a current Alliance member who works with an Imperial princess to rid the galaxy of slavery, and I remember where I was and what I was doing when I earned my first Cobra, first Asp Explorer (the ship I spent the most hours in), first Python, when I got the Cutter...when I saw the center of the galaxy...on and on...

I remember landing on my first planet, driving my SRV. I remain in awe when I play this with my Rift S, and I love it when I see my college-aged son online and join him.

This game has been the joy of my gaming life since it launched; I love the lore, the emergence of the Guardians, my ability to listen to the codex entries...all of it. I probably have about $1100 total invested in the game and the cosmetics. My squadron stands against slavery of all kinds, and I enjoy figuring out how to RP that effectively. I look forward to whatever the end of 2020 brings in terms of evolution and changes.

Feedback to FD is right, appropriate and just. The shots taken at FD, please understand this, do not diminish them...they diminish the submission you are trying to make. These people did the work, produced a great game. Some schmuck gonna come along and just shit on them as professionals, shit on their efforts? Why would anyone listen to anything you say after that? I would probably only occasionally engage such margins, just to see if there's anything of worth there.

But these folks aren't elected officials. They have zero responsibility to engage all opinions from all constituents. Lots of folks here have gotten THOUSANDS of hours of gameplay from their product. Hell, I'm a Lifetime Pass holder for the game, and I don't feel cheated...I simply look forward to more.

Could FD improve? Yes. What product or service in your life is perfect and complete, with no need to take stock and continue to become better? Please name it. But the vitriol from some quarters about the game - especially when, upon drilling down into their submission, you find that it essentially boils down to "I want the game to be something else" - is beyond the pale, diminishes the hater, and erodes the quality of the community.

I'm asking you to reconsider the posts that are diatribes at a game that has in fact given us so much joy...it's weird and broken and kind of sick as an approach. You've gotten SUPERIOR value for your dollar relative to other forms of entertainment, even within this genre. Let's grow up and act like it.

Most importantly, can we try to speak with those at FD like they are fully human? Like they could be harmed by harmful discourse? Can we become haters of the hater within us? Can we purge it, and resultantly forge a healthier community for the upcoming, evolving experience? I know dozens of player Commanders who would be uplifted by that, empowered by that.

    Thanks.
