Low Temp Diamond miners, this one's for you!

    Alone in the darkness

While you're bound to a stone

    Your life quickly fading

You were more than a drone

    You brought me to wealth

    In the diamonds so cold

    Thirty three percent?

    That's a haul to behold

Though I wished I could take you

    Fate isn't that kind

With a salute for your service

    I must leave you behind

So the site of your triumph

    Will soon be your grave

    And I'll never forget

    The scan data you gave

    Your kind numbers thousands

    Even more would be true

    And all of them wish

To be a limpet, like you

Jameson Memorial - I didn't expect Elite to make me cry

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 02:56 PM PST

I'm sure this has been discussed before and maybe others wouldn't find it as sad as I did, but the logs left behind at Jameson Memorial are heart wrenching. I won't spoil the content for the few that haven't heard them, but they're included here.

    How hard is this game?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 08:26 AM PST

I posted a few days ago asking for some newbie advice & thanks to everyone who posted.

By Christ things have changed since playing Elite on my C64 in the 80s. This may sound ridiculous to you under-30 gamers (which, until I purchased ED, I was not) but I'm amazed at the level of detail, complexity and realism in this game. The learning curve is immense and when playing over the weekend I will confess to almost throwing in the towel. I come from a simpler time when you loaded the game and starting shooting straight away. Obviously, this is far from the case with ED :-)

I bought a Thrustmaster T16000 (with the throttle) and this is perhaps the biggest learning curve. My Atari 2600 joystick had one button. My Quickshot II had no more than 3. I lost count how many buttons and functions this Thrustmaster has and it's overwhelming. I need to print a cheat sheet and keep it close by. However, I did find myself quickly becoming comfortable - if not competent - using the stick to navigate through the UI panels and star maps. In flight - targeting, FSD, thrust, etc. is still a fumbling, stumbling mystery.

While ED is completely different to the original Elite, it does have the same feel and generate the same emotions as its predecessor. I spent hours this past weekend drifting aimlessly and burning hours of game time just like I did when I was a kid. I think I'm hooked.

Drew Wagar called it 4 years ago

What's with the lack of worldbuilding?

Drew Wagar | Author of ED Books Reclamation and Premonition

    4y

Speaking as one of the erstwhile official book authors for the game (google Elite: Reclamation if you're interested) I can tell you that this is entirely due to Frontier maintaining every single piece of content in house for reasons unknown.

All the 'official' authors volunteered to write content for the game; missions, overarching storylines, weapons/station/system naming, system description and background, community goals, characters (real characters with backstories unlike the awful 2D PowerPlay placeholders) and were almost begging Frontier to let us help them as we could see there was a terrible dearth of content and they'd never be able to flesh it out effectively. We could see the players would start complaining that the game was 'empty' right from the gamma phase.

Those calls have fallen on deaf ears, alas. Frontier have ignored the writers, despite us being able to demonstrate our skill and credibility. They are doing everything in house, alongside suspected micromanagement of approval, thus only a trickle of content emerges.

Galnet is a mess, with multiple stories lines going nowhere, because they are being made up on the fly. There is very little behind the storylines present in the game. The PP characters feel two dimensional because they are not professionally developed by competent writers. They have no real backstory and have been shoved into the game with little thought for continuity, character arc, nuance or any of the other stuff that a real writer does as a matter of course before even beginning to write a story. They really are just the artwork you see, there is nothing else about them.

At a fraction of the cost of implementing PP we could have had a universe full of engaging content, story and adventure. PP and CQC is what they have spent their resources on (and obviously Horizons - which I fear will suffer the exact same 'empty' feeling once we get past the novelty of landing on planets).

At this point FD could have had multiple 'newspapers' with themed content, imaginative community goals, system descriptions with interesting backstory all across habited space. We understand they wanted to hold the big stuff (Raxxla, Thargoids etc) but with 400 Billion stars - room for a few stories don't you think? But no.

They actively chose not to do this. We authors have effectively given up as we've been ostracised by FD since launch. They do not want our help. I have no idea why, as we're all professional people who can clearly do a professional job to timescales, quality and submit to a quality approval process. We have volunteered freely and submitted costed business proposals yet all have been ignored. I'm afraid we have given up trying.

If you're finding ED a mile wide and an inch deep, now you know why.

    Cheers,

    Drew.
