Fleet Carriers Beta 1 Feedback Changes

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 04:35 AM PDT

Why can't we just load up our carriers with Slaves and not have to pay upkeep?

    Passive Upkeep Has. To. Go.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 08:39 AM PDT

In reference to the changes announced today, I really do appreciate them. All except... for the changes to upkeep.

The only acceptable change to always-on upkeep is total removal and replacement of the system.

Most of the proponents for upkeep that I've argued with seem to think we on this side of the aisle don't want to incur any operating costs at all, which is not true. I'd be fine with no passive upkeep but increased fuel costs. No passive upkeep but increased jump wear/tear repair costs. A flat percentage of earnings like SLF pilots take makes the most sense to me. Even a flat upkeep just for the time you're playing would be fine. It's the fact that it ticks away when you're offline that HAS. TO. GO.

    Here's why upkeep doesn't work:

For easier math, let's assume we both have minimum loadouts, core only, with the proposed changes. Weekly upkeep: 5m each. Neither of us want to lose our carrier of course, so once we buy it, we're making this commitment from now until we quit playing for good. We don't play for the same amount of time per year, so we're going to reflect that with upkeep costs as an annual figure versus play time.

"Effective Weekly Upkeep" will be our measure of how much money you need to pay per week to keep your carrier for a year versus your time spent in game.

Total Annual Upkeep is 260,000,000c (5m x 52 weeks) for both of us.

    I play 40/52 weeks a year - Effective Weekly Upkeep: 6,500,000cYou play 8/52 weeks a year - Effective Weekly Upkeep: 32,5000,000c

Now yes, when you do play for 40/52 weeks a year, 6.5m credits is easy to come by (and the real costs would still be much higher), but the less you play, the more time you have to spend grinding credits to pay for your own absence.

Making it more affordable doesn't change the fact that that's what the system is in place to do.

THAT's a textbook penalty ladies and gentlemen. Pure and simple. That's a tax on not playing, and it CANNOT be allowed in our shared game.

    No Upkeep Cost is Acceptable

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 01:28 PM PDT

Upkeep costs of any type that accrue while you're not playing, and that will force a repossession of your fleet carrier if unpaid, is totally, and completely, unacceptable.

How does that even work? Once I purchase a car, or boat, or television, or washing machine, if I can't afford the maintenance, upkeep, or insurance costs associated with it, I may have leave it sitting there unused, but the store or dealer doesn't get to come over to my house and just take it back. Who, exactly, is "repossessing" property that you own outright?

This is, in my view, a predatory and malicious mechanic that no one should accept.

Please let's discuss: Tritium Mining Still makes Fleet Carriers Unviable For Exploration

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 07:18 AM PDT

Ok, there will be changes to the upkeep costs, and that is good (not perfect, but what the hell).

    Also, yay for Universal Cartographics.

However, as an explorer what I'm more interested in is how viable FCs are for exploration, and sadly they're not even remotely close.

    Not. Even. Close.

Think about taking your carrier to Beagle Point.

It's 65000 light years, give or take

As of now a carrier apparently makes 2 light years per ton of fuel. I'm still not sure of whether that changes depending on cargo, but let's say this is the best case scenario; 2 light years unladen jump per ton.

It's still 32500 tons of fuel just to get there, with a total of 65000 for a round trip.

Now, despite how much I hate mining I've done a good deal of it, as I wanted to get a shitload of cash in one go and not have to think about it ever again.

It takes about 3 hours for me to mine 500 tons of minerals, so let's say the average, with my A rated, fully engineered mining Cutter, is 165 tons per hour (rounded down).

In order to get to Beagle Point and back, I'd have to mine for [65000/165] = 394 hours (rounded up).

Read it again: in order to get to Beagle Point and back, I'd have to mine for 394 hours.

How the fuck is this fun? How does the expense of around 7 billion plus upkeep ADD to the simple enjoyment of getting a very cheap Asp and just get there with not a thought in the world?

Universal Cartographic is irrelevant if those things are impossible to take out of the Bubble.

Because, christ, who wants to shoot at rocks for close to 400 hours when they can get to the same place in under 10 hours?

Bottom line, Tritium should be scooped, not mined, for fuck's sake.

Make it more difficult to scoop, make it so that just some particular bodies are scoopable or whatever, but you can't force explorers to turn into miners just for the sake of it, 400 hours, are we serious?

    Space is terrifying

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 08:38 AM PDT

There is something very unnerving about this game. Coming out of a warp and being face to face with a massive star, or just seeing the sheer size of planets, with the huge empty spaces between. Something about the breadth and massiveness of the experience is so scary to me. Does anyone else have these feelings?

    The implication of Upkeep

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 12:26 PM PDT

Both of these statements are true right now:

a.) You pay an upkeep that WILL result in you losing your carrier at some point. It will just take longer with a lower upkeep.

b.) Selling the carrier does not give you 100%(or close to 100%) of your credits back. Right now you will lose 66% aka at least 3.3 BILLION credits in the event of forced involuntary debt decommision.

b is just ridiculous if you think about it.

a is sad because it is possible to lose your carrier thousands of lightyears away from the bubble. Which can and will result in leaving people stranded as they will likely use a local exploration ship and not a fully functional one, which in the end is the reason why you went out there with a carrier in the first place.

a and b on their own are bad enough and shouldn't be accepted in any >game< in my opinion, but if you combine them, then you have absolute chaos.

What does this mean for us the players?

The developers made the conscious decision to implement an upkeep and deliberately created a way to be forced to sell the carrier. If you add what I said above to this, then it is INTENDED to delete a massive chunk of a players wealth at some point, considering credits essentially are your progression in this game means that the developers are fully willing to regress any players savegame for an, so far, undisclosed reason.

I am insulted that they think that it is okay to treat your playerbase like that.

And I am saddened that so many players seem to be happy with a nerf to the upkeep-cost.

Carriers have so many problems, but dont accept one as fatal as this. Please spread this and let FDev know that it is unaccetable to treat players, or rather, customers this way.

I'm kinda curious on how you guys are gonna use FC's to refuel regular ships and how or if you're gonna help stranded FC's.
