"Odyssey is our most ambitious Elite Dangerous expansion to date," said David Braben, Founder and CEO of Frontier. "Extending coverage to the super-fine scale that is needed for on-foot gameplay while maintaining the vast raw distances measured in light years, is a huge achievement by the team, and greatly extends the already rich Elite Dangerous experience. We hope you will join us to continue this journey of discovery and adventure when Elite Dangerous: Odyssey launches in early 2021."

    Further info/answers

Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We're big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.

Will there be Base Building in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey?

Base building is not currently on the roadmap for Elite Dangerous, however we have plenty of new features planned instead such as on-foot exploration, new planetary tech, social hubs, combat as well as more to be shared later on! We're looking to put our best foot forwardwith Odyssey and if you'd like an overview of what to expect, you can check out the website or Steam page.

Will Elite Dangerous: Odyssey be included in my Lifetime Expansion Pass?

While Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is a paid expansion, we're happy to confirm that yes, this expansion will absolutely be included in the Lifetime Expansion Pass for free.

    From UploadVR's article

In a follow up email we confirmed that VR support is still an open possibility sometime after launch, "with no defined date," according to the company.

    From Thursday livestream

10m37s - So for you guys asking about VR, we did put a couple of clarifications on the forums for you, but I'm more than happy to share it here as well. So VR is not going to be compatible with Odyssey at launch, but it will stay compatible with the base game and with Horizons. So that's all that we've got to share at the moment regarding VR. But anything that you've been saying, we've heard your feedback, and we've got it all collected. That's just really all we can say for now on that one.

29m35s - Obviously especially with VR it's a very difficult... you have to get it really right, because people can get motion sickness and everything else, and all this other stuff. So it may not be there on launch. And we hope that it doesn't upset anybody, we do apologise.

30m36s - VR will still be compatible with the base game and Horizons.

41m00s - We have of course seen all of the feedback, and that's why we wanted to make sure that we were sharing what we could, as soon as we could, regarding VR. And it is something that of course we're in contact with the team all the time. So as soon as we're able to share more information and we have more to share with you about those kind of specifics then naturally that's what we're going to do.

The biggest disappointment following the announcement of Odyssey

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 03:03 AM PDT

The negativity. Alot of us have been waiting for space legs for a very long time. I feel like this new expansion will bring countless new players to the scene, people who wouldn't normally play the game, and yet all I see are people bitching about not having VR support for odyssey. Ok, I get that we don't fully understand how this is going to work and I understand the reason people are worried about it. But the game isn't "totally and utterly unplayable" without VR. I would think that everyone would just be excited that we're getting content that has been promised from the beginning. We're all fellow CMDRs here. Can't we be happy for once? And I see alot of people stating that the content will just be half-assed and not worth a shit. Why would you want to be that negative about the game? Why are you on this sub if you think so poorly of the game and its developers? To me, the lack of good content and canceling of some of the content in the game (galnet Nd PP) tells us a story. It tells us that MAYBE they've put these things to the side because they've been full steam ahead focused on Odyssey. Im optimistic that it'll change the game forever in a very positive way. And I think they're going to blow our minds with it, even if its not VR supported. And to be honest, I wouldnt want it to be. There are very few VR PvP shooters out there that are good. And with a game like this, I'd rather it be completely polished over and immersive than have a shitty VR port thats not really that immersive, just for a small number of players happiness. I LOVE the ED VR experience, I really do. There isnt anything else quite like it out there. But Odyssey should remain untouched in terms of VR. And no matter what perspective or opinion you have on it, we shouldn't be so critical of FDev for making the decision to play it safe and not focus on VR for the content. Its a fuckin tough call to make, especially with you toxic ass people as the player base. (Not all, but most of everybody that ive been seeing comment on the subject). So, with that being said, im super fucking stoked about this DLC and if its done right, honestly Elite Dangerous will forever be one of my favorite games out there. The only thing that I was ever upset about was not being able to use my Elite Feet. Im glad we're finally getting it, no matter what capacity FDev decide to implement it.

Edit: After reading through the comments of several VR players, even though I am one, I did not fully realize how they are feeling until now. VR players arent self centered ass holes that are just being greedy, they have the right to complain and my intentions with the post weren't an attempt to try to silence them. I was caught up in my own excitement and just couldn't fathom why anybody would be negative about the DLC. I see now, that VR players are more worried that their favorite way of playing the game might get left behind entirely. And the only way to fix this, is to simply wait for FDev to release more information on the exoansion. I feel you, CMDRs. Im sorry if you felt like I was trying to override your concerns, I wasn't trying to do that and I apologize for how I came off. Your points are valid. I hope that they don't leave VR players behind and that if they can't support Elite Feet in VR, that they can find a way to compensate for the lack thereof. o7 CMDRs.

LTD Systems Analysis (tool to hunt down new stations offering high LTD prices)

LTD Systems Analysis (tool to hunt down new stations offering high LTD prices)

Hi CMDRs, over the past three months I've been working on an LTD Systems Analysis tool, which is used to locate new stations offering high LTD prices.

As you probably know, the LTD price data (and all other data) on Inara, EDDB and the Miner's Tool isn't supplied by Frontier, but is instead submitted by CMDRs on PC running data upload apps in the background while they play, such as ED Market Connector and ED Discovery.

This tool filters the 20,600 populated systems into a relatively smaller set of candidate systems (approximately 250 each day) that are more likely to buy LTDs for a high price. CMDRs then fly around and visit these systems, and about every second or third day we discover a tasty system offering high LTD prices (1.6+ million/cr).

Here's some screenshots of the worksheet in action .. not quite as pretty as twin suns rising over an earth-like world, but it's the best we can do in Excel :)

    Settings page

    Analysis worksheet

    Action table

    Faction research

    Link:

Instructions (pastebin) and download (google drive)

Over the past few months, many of the high LTD prices (but not all) have been found by a small team specifically hunting down these systems. Although you might often see stations buying LTDs for 1.6mil, these stations are actually very rare. So each day the LTD spreadsheet provides us with a list of candidate systems to check.

To briefly summarise, the LTD price is inflated when a system's controlling minor faction experiences four specific 'states' simultaneously (aka X4 states). Unfortunately we can't use the in-game Galmap to identify these overlapping states, but we can use Excel to sift through the states of all the populated systems.

For LTD prices 1.6+ million/cr we are looking for system states:

Boom (or Investment) + Expansion + Civil Liberty + Public Holiday

For LTD prices around 1.1 million/cr we are looking for system states:

Boom (or Investment) + Expansion + Civil Liberty + Pirate Attack

(Plus a few other 3-state patterns, such as Boom (or Investment) + Expansion + Public Holiday)

A system can't be in Boom and Investment at the same time, nor in Public Holiday and Pirate Attack at the same time

Furthermore, stations only buy LTDs if they have the correct economy, specifically a HIRTo economy (High-tech, Industrial, Refinery and Tourism).

This Systems Analysis tool was originally released on the Elite Miners sub, and has been revised across five updates to improve the accuracy of the data and ease of analysis. I'd especially like to thank u/Johny_D_Doe for his great ideas about hyperlinks, file handling, bug fixing, and a bunch of other improvements, so this version wouldn't exist without his guidance.

The spreadsheet was developed on the latest version of Excel (V16) for PC. Unfortunately they've changed the VBA scripting language since earlier versions of Excel, and on Mac they prohibit the running of many scripts. Google sheets also uses an entirely different scripting language.

I understand there are a few CMDRs developing an online version of this tool, and I look forward to seeing these developments.

Last but not least, a huge ♡ thank you ♡ to the team at EDDB for supplying the data and making it available each day, you guys are awesome!

If you'd like to participate or even just see how it works, download the spreadsheet, have a tinker, and feel free to ask any questions

PS. If you're not already, please download and run ED Discovery or EDMC in the background while you play. The more data we have the easier it is to locate high LTD prices, thank you

    Good hunting,

    o7

I played the game for a few months after launch. Despairing of ever earning enough money to get an Anaconda, I abandoned the game. Jingles recently started playing again and his videos on mining convinced me to have another go... diamonds starting to come good. Time to get that Anaconda!

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 05:16 AM PDT

Disappointed with the new announcement? Not me! I've been waiting for this since 1993!

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 11:35 PM PDT

I get that a lot of people are upset about the lack of VR or the colour of the planets or whatever, but I just can't get on board with that. I have been waiting for this for nearly 30 years!

12 year old me with my Amiga A500+, sitting in my Eagle Long Range Fighter on the pad at Sirocco station, thinking "Man, it would be so cool if I could get out of my ship and wander round". And then taking a package to Barnard's Star for Cr400, and watching the auto dock at Boston Base from the external cam, marvelling at the ~20 polygon 3D image, just dreaming about exploring the station on foot, maybe hitting up a sleazy space bar.

A game on that scale was unheard of back then. I accepted the limitations because it was already pretty amazing that they fit an entire galaxy onto a single floppy disk (like, how? Couldn't fit a single word doc in that space today). Now with the resources of a modern PC, David Braben is finally giving me everything I ever dreamed of, and I am SUPER excited.
