E:D Technical Manual Trivia: Powerplant fuel consumption is 22.2g/s for each MW

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 01:02 PM PST

As part of dabbling in some sort of Technical Manual, I thought I'd share something totally worthless for everyday gameplay but interesting nonetheless: Fuel usage across all ships and powerplants is a consistent 22.1-22.3 grams per second for each MegaWatt generated. I'm sure the small error range is due to not having more significant digits in game, so I'm guessing the modelling is 22.2g/s.

What does this mean to me? It means we can say confidently that the energy generation mechanism (fusion?) in all powerplants is consistent in conversion of fuel (hydrogen? deuterium?) to energy. The variation between powerplants is in the amount of energy they can generate and the resulting heat that needs to be sinked. Every ship, every powerplant you fit is going to consume 22.2g/s of fuel for every MW you use. This means turn things off to save fuel!!!

A quick word on heat, before the ensuing debate in the comments: We must think of the heat generated as extremely, extremely small relative to the size of the energy generated. I am still working on this part, so I won't respond to debates on heat below.

I tested across multiple ships and fitted powerplants, engineered and non-engineered. I checked the displayed fuel consumption rate in supercruise, at rest, with hardpoints deployed and retracted.

    For example:

Federal Dropship with a 5A Overcharge Grade 2 Powerplant:

23.99MW Capacity, 96% used, 2.17/h in supercruise (remember, FSD takes directly from the reservoir), 1.85/h deployed hardpoints

    23.03MW used over 1.85T/h = 0.08033T/h/MW = 0.0223kg/s/MW

Again: The lesson here is turn things off (ie. Planetary Vehicle Hangar) you're not using to save 22.2g/s/MW!!!

I can't feel the size or scale of the ship inside the cockpit and i think I know why.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 11:33 AM PST

I can't feel the size or scale of the ship inside the cockpit and i think I know why.

First off, I'm mostly web developer and I used to be a part of small indie game development team. I have worked with game engine physics system and in-game Virtual camera systems fairly well.

So I've been playing this game for quite a some time now 300hr there's this thing really bothering me that I couldn't quite feel the size of the ship inside the cockpit. YES inside the SHIP's COCKPIT. Although there's a other factor that's contributing this issue that partially because of distances in the game and lack of comparison from ourselves (pilots). For example the station isn't seem big deal until you get close up front. But none of these aren't the real reason that you or me can't feel the size of the ship inside the ship's cockpit. If you could notice by now why I keep saying inside the ship's cockpit. This is because i can feel the size of the ship inside SRV , cockpit of SRV. But as soon as you hop into the cockpit of the ship the issue start. So to understand the issue, you need to understand how we perceive our environment in real life and how game simulate this experience with virtual camera in the game.

In real life we have this limit of how we can see things around us when we stay still. Let's say if you're directly standing in front of a large window. If you're human surely you would not be able to see the window entirely but partially. But if you put a Chameleons or anything that has wider angle of view than avg human to that same place, that animal or that living thing might be able see the whole window without turning around or moving a little further back. This is because we human has narrower angle of view than Chameleons. Our angle of view doesn't not change whether you're inside a ship or airplane or house. In real life it is fixed.

In ELITE DANGEROUS this is so messed up ,check the picture of my ASP explorer, notice how big the side mirror windows are compare to the pilot in picture 1,2,3.

    big windows compare to pilot

    big windows compare to pilot

    big windows again

And In picture 4, notice how the player (us) can see the whole left side of the mirror windows even tho it's pretty big and we're so close to it.

ooops never mind it's small now

This mean that the player's perspective camera has Too MUCH unrealistic wide angle of view. Even if you hop into bigger ship like Krait mk2 or anaconda or type 10 defender really, The player's angle of view is getting wider depending on the ship so it just feel like you're body or pilot or player is getting bigger as the ship bigger or getting smaller as the ship smaller even when base angle of view is already wide in unrealistic way. Angle of view isn't suppose to work like that. It isn't suppose to be a variable for player's perspective virtual camera. It isn't supposed to that wide either. That's why when you hop into the SRV as your angle of view smaller and you can feel the size of the ship again.

THIS MIGHT HELP IN UNDERSTANDING WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT : https://threejs.org/examples/#webgl_camera

So even if space legs (odysseys) come or even if the game let you walk around the interior of the ship this issue won't go away as long as the dev keep this angle of view settings.

UPVOTE THE POST SO THAT DEV CAN SEE THIS

IF you're the developer of the game reading this PLS PLS PLS fix this with issue. You game make this huge galaxy and let us not have sense of scale of our own ship? COME ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This game scares the hell out of me...but I can't stop.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 06:43 AM PST

I just started playing this game last week seriously. I had played it a couple years ago around the time Horizons came out because a few buddies wanted me to try it out. I could never really get into it because I was told what button to press, where to go, what to do. When they gave the game a break, I completely stopped playing it. I recently got a Thrustmaster Hotas 4 for StarWars: Squadrons and I decided to pick this game back up.. this time solo.

This game. It terrifies me. I have a phobia of the ocean and playing this game gives me the exact kind if feeling. It's the scale, the darkness, its the unknown. It is scary yet so amazing. Every time I jump to a new system and not know exactly what I am going to see on the other side. The first time I got interdicted I almost just turned the game off. The first time I warped into a neutron star and almost lost my ship, I thought about uninstalling... yet..

I see why there are so many loyal players and the reason I have not stopped yet is because of the amazing community. The dedicated YouTubers who put helpful content out there. I have met a few CMDRs out in the wild and they were nothing but helpful. They directed me to a YouTube channel named 'Hawkes Gaming'. After a few mining tutorial videos and a few hours of grinding, I just purchased my first Anaconda. I am now more confident in my survivability and the overall understanding of the game.

I just wanted to share my thoughts and I thank all of you helpful people out there. You are the reason players stay.

    EDIT: Spelling and Grammar
