Time to start installing my copy of Elite Dangerous Odyssey! Only 44198 floppies to go!

Odyssey Gameplay - EVA...? I was walking around an outpost and randomly glitched through the it. I ended up in space. No gravity, but the strange part was. The game KNEW I was in space. My energy drained, and I even had a working jetpack! I could move! Here are some screenshots I got.

Message to Frontier devs about Odyssey

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 05:20 AM PDT

Just want to let you know that, despite all the possible controversial discussions about the Alpha / Odyssey in general (especially on Steam forums, this place is insane), there are many people who patiently wait and understand the whole work behind this update.

I see comments like 'no interiors, refund', 'system requirements changed, odyssey bad', 'why we pay to test it for them', etc.

I understand that many players want to get all at once but this is not realistic. Odyssey brings completely new gameplay to the ED. This is not your regular DLC for some EA game. This is something BIG that has to be integrated into the already existing (and working!) game.

Elite Dangerous was designed and coded around ships and space. Now we get on-foot experience FOR THE FIRST TIME! This is a huge amount of work under the hood. Frontier uses their own game engine, they don't rely on something like Unreal Engine which was designed especially around first-person on-foot experience. Legs, weapons, NPCs, station designs, networking, integrating with existing codebase, THIS IS HUGE!

Don't get me wrong, I understand that customers don't care about how the product is being done. What I want to say is, however, there are many players who understand what is being done and look forward to the future of Elite Dangerous.

Yes, this game isn't ideal. I don't believe it can be ideal given its scale. There is always something to improve. But for me this game ticks all the boxes of what I always wanted to see and PLAY.

Ship interiors? I also would like to see them but this is surely NOT a priority. What can you do here repeatedly? Heck, we don't even have walk-able characters yet, why do you want Frontier to spend time and resources designing unique interiors for 38 ships NOW? Let them build the fundamental things first!

Regarding the system requirements... As Frontier previously stated, Odyssey shouldn't demand more than Horizons. I see people complain about 1060 as a recommended card. But... 1060 is almost 5 years old! They also said themselves that Alpha lacks big amount of further work towards the performance optimization.

I'm a software developer myself and I know from personal experience how it feels during the launch hours and the following hours / days. I bet ED developers won't have a good sleep next night (and possibly nights).

Expect the best, prepare for the worst.

O7 commanders, hope we gonna have fun.

to avoid spending over 10 minutes in the taxi only take missions to the following locations

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 12:12 PM PDT

edit: this list is only relevant if you're currently on a station or planet around the main star, the one called "A".

if you're one of the commanders who spawned on one of the other ones you could either travel to somewhere around star "A" to use this list, or you'd be better of actually avoiding these stations.

these are the locations on the landables around the main star (edited to make the list alphabetic for easier scanning)

    • ameziane landing
    • boumal synthetics
    • brownlie's creations
    • bray military armoury
    • bukenya military expedition
    • castro manufacturing
    • cukkemane genetics
    • desai military hub
    • feoktistov mine
    • farias botanical site
    • hou synthetics
    • kenyatta hydroponics
    • konscak penal colony (city)
    • lawler camp
    • maldonado analytics
    • morales commando garrison
    • navarrete's fortress
    • povaly's arsenal
    • parry holdings
    • savko's honour

Alpha First Impressions. The potential is INCREDIBLE.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 10:01 AM PDT

TLDR at end. Iwill be updating this as I play, due to the attention it has received.

The Alpha for Odyssey finally finished it's install and I managed to squeeze out some gameplay. Here is a breakdown of what I've seen so far:

    -The Good:

The social zones are big, immersive, and full of things to interact with and do.

Mission terminals demonstrate a much better mission screen that makes picking jobs much easier.

There are tons of new kinds of missions to pick.

The system and galaxy map have been majorly updated with additions such as filters and quick buttons to take you to mission objectives.

Odyssey will give a whole new meaning to home systems.

The Taxi system is really freaking cool. From the NPC pilot that talks to you throughout takeoff and landing, to the fact that it's an actual ride from one place to the next, not a loading screen.

The NPCs are really good, their interactions with you are immersive and the conversations you have with them just feel really nice.

The suits and weapons are really cheap (compared to ships).

There is a huge amount of content implemented that really suck you into the game.

    Guns feel and sound great.

-The Bad: (To be expected in Alpha)

The graphics are totally unoptimized. Even running on Ultra everything just can't keep up with the game. Textures are blocky and ugly, and most just take forever to load in.

Using the Apex taxi service seems directly responsible for lowering graphics performance. Use this link to report this bug: https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/24004

    You're going to constantly disconnect.

Disconnecting when leaving a shuttle puts you back into the shuttle and makes you start the landing process over again from 40km out, which takes forever.

The game has a hard time loading between on foot and in ship.

Npc voices intermittently drop in quality.

There is some hardcore input lag at times that's related to the game having a hard time rendering.

No matter what, ship textures in game just seem to not load, even when everything around them is fully rendered.

Disconnecting in the middle of a mission, and then reconnecting, completely changes the mission objective.

Threat level seems meaningless, as a threat level zero mission put me against a base of instantly hostile guards that shoot you on sight.

The Alpha is almost unplayable at this time due to graphics and server issues.

Using the mission terminal, closing it, then using it again without moving will occasionally lock you in place forcing a relog.

    -Misc:

Combat is really hard (without proper gear). You will die quickly if you engage in combat in your flight suit.

The profile analyser will allow you to get into locked bases.

TLDR: The Odyssey Alpha demonstrates the groundwork for the future full release, and it's absolutely amazing. When the full release is finally out and everything is finished, odyssey will take Elite to soaring new heights. The Alpha itself isn't really fun (but we're still in phase one and on the first day of release), and if you're looking to just see what's coming you should just watch some streams or youtube videos of the alpha when some are released, it's not really worth playing at this point if you're not looking to help test and improve the game.

Edit: Added some things I forgot to mention.

PSA: Check the Alpha's in-game livery store. ALL ships have received a graphical enhancement.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 12:17 PM PDT

A comparison was made before with the old siderwinder and new one. It seems the touch-ups have been applied to virtually all the ships. This isn't just the result of the new lighting and shaders, but generally new bump maps have been applied too, with some detailing here and there such as navigation lights. Some changes are more apparent then others, but they seem to be there for all ships. So go check out how your favourite ship has had a facelift!

Just got in firefight with two CMDRs and an entire settlement. Nades were thrown and I blew another CMDR up by shooting one of the explosive barrels. This game is a fucking blast can't wait til we can fly too!

Elite is gonna be a whole different game once they get the bugs solved and release.

Odyssey is great... And confusing as hell.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 01:12 PM PDT

Preface: I'm sorry if i seem irritable. I've spent 7 hours straight in this alpha and haven't been able to make any progress whatsoever. Not a single mission completed.

Just my take as an elite veteran... Odyssey is amazing. It looks great, it feels great. But missions are so damn confusing. I'm provided a piece of equipment to repair a station's reactor, only for me to arrive and find all the doors shut and without power, the only way to open them is to have the cutting tool on the maverick suit (which you need mission money to buy). So that mission fails. Then I try a combat mission. I'm scanned by a guard and they call out "Smuggler!". The entire compound opens fire on me and I'm killed in seconds, despite the mission threat level being 0, and as far as I know I had no bounty or crimes committed.

How do I complete missions? Why aren't there certain suit tools listed in mission requirements?

I want this to be good, but it drops you in with absolutely 0 help. I'm just trying to complete a single mission here.

Been playing for 2 hours and have accomplished nothing.

Edit: I tried scavenging too. I arrived to find all buildings inaccessible (no power, need maverick suit) and loads of pirates. I can't afford weapons or a suit, so what the hell am I supposed to do? I travel for 10-20 mins to a mission destination, find a mission I can't complete, then either die or travel back to a destination to inevitably try another mission. It's pretty annoying.

Edit 2: as a suggestion. Mirror ship progression. When you start in a ship, you have courier missions. These can be done in a sidewinder with no extra requirements. If you're going to start us out with so little cash, we need easy missions with enough pay to enable us to buy what we need for the harder stuff.

Edit 3: 5 hours in and still no completion. Last mission I tried to do resulted in a client crash when I arrived.

Edit 4: finally found my objective for a scavenger mission! Picked it up aaaand it disappeared. Not in my inventory and not where it should've been. Just f*cking kill me already, these missions are so scuffed.

Edit: 5: game crashed again. Loaded into the same abandoned base where I was but I was surrounded by pirates. Like 4 npc pirates all within like 10 feet of me. Killed. Sent back to station to start over. I'm so effing done with this alpha. What a disaster.

Edit 6: finally found a scavenger mission with the objective outside the buildings, but rather than a code, the box required a clearance level to open. Clearance. In an abandoned site. No one around. No way to get clearance. So I failed again. And e-breaches apparently aren't available in this phase, so eff me I guess.

    Odyssey Stonks PSA

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 10:43 AM PDT

How to make money without having to complete the uncompleteable missions:

    1. Accept support missions where they give you a power regulator to go fix some settlement's power.

    2. Make sure the regulator is in your inventory.

    3. Abandon the mission.

    4. Taxi hop to the next nearest station.

    5. Go find the bartender, sell your power regulator for 100k.

    6. Repeat and profit?

    I already bought a flight suit :)

Your inventory space only allows for 2 regulators so you can only make 200k in each go.

edit: the taxi hop is necessary only because the regulator doesn't seem to show up for sale in the same station you picked it up from (relog didn't seem to work either)

Edit2: once you buy the flight suit, you can complete the power regulator missions! Arc tool is available with the Maverick suit. Grenades, primary weapon, all works!

Established in 3223 as a haulage company, Takada made the bold decision to recruit and train its own security force. Over the years a series of highly effective laser weaponry was developed to support the security teams including the new laser assault rifle.
