The hunt for the Hesperus: an update

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 05:42 AM PDT

This is a quick summary of what is going on with the hunt for the Adamastor's sister ship, the Hesperus.

On the 8th of April 3307, GalNet announced that the Adamastor had started retransmitting a message originating from the Hesperus. [Here is the intragalactic forum thread if you want 27+ pages of details].

    Listening Post inside the Adamastor

    System: Chukchan

Access Code AZB3648-000 Secure channel link established. Drive input mode: Locked Source ID: H002255 [Hesperus] Timestamp: 08/04/3307 03:44 Proximity alert: Type G [unidentified megaship] Emergency upload protocol 01G engaged. Status log: Inactive Crew manifest: Inactive Locator beacon: Active Pulse transmission status: Running Navigational data to follow... H1 Key -E H2 Key +H H3 Key -C Source region: Taurus Security notice: All information contained herein remains the intellectual property of Azimuth Biochemicals. Any violations of confidentiality will be prosecuted in accordance with the 2984 Corporate Communications Act.

The main clue here was to search in the Taurus Dark Region, so an army of private investigators, spearheaded by the Canonn Research Group, began scouring the area and soon a listening post was found.

    Listening Post H1

    System: Taurus Dark Region UY-R

Transmitting encrypted data package Weak matched signals detected: Latin alphabet H2 FBJILYIFUILOMPDYAFRGMKIULIN 1333 H3 ADFFGDKIOOPLFNIHLRFEUOPQJWLSEDM Source ID: H002255 [Hesperus] Signal range: REDACTED A3:-L_,C3:+AF_,G2:*-A ...Transmission Ends..

After some head-scratching, an investigator hit upon the idea of rearranging the letters in the H3 code, and applying ROT23 (key -C) to the text.

XAC CDA HFL LMI CKF EIO CBR LMN GTI PBA J

The rightmost column of letters spells out "California" -- and so we had a lead on the location of the H3 listening post (California Sector). A similar approach revealed that H2 is located near the NGC 1333 nebula:

    NJRQTGQN CQTWUXLG INZOUSQC TQV 1333

    Listening Post H2

System: Perseus Dark Region LN-K B8-0

Transmitting encrypted data package Weak matched signals detected: Latin alphabet H1 ACGTYMNGYFUIPLZGHUIWBLUIZOPKMXGTR H3 ADFFGDKIOOPLFNIHLRFEUOPQJWLSEDM Source ID: H002255 [Hesperus] Signal range: REDACTED A2:/B,C1:+BL_,G1:+DF_ ...Transmission Ends..

The matched signals here confirmed the location of the listening posts H1 and H3.

    Listening Post H3

The final listening post proved more elusive, and took considerably longer to track down. Eventually however a member of Canonn Research found the probe tucked away inside an asteroid field, barely more than an hour ago at time of writing this. It remains to be determined why the H3 listening post was so much harder to find than the others; it is speculated that the transmitter may have been damaged by micrometeorites, effectively reducing the signal's intensity.

    System: California Sector IH-V C2-1

Transmitting encrypted data package Weak matched signals detected: Latin alphabet H1 ACGTYMNGYFUIPLZGHUIWBLUIZOPKMXGTR H2 FBJILYIFUILOMPDYAFRGMKIULIN 1333 Source ID: H002255 [Hesperus] Signal range: REDACTED A1:-AX_,C2:*-A,G3:-D_ ...Transmission Ends..

    What now?

Having gathered these clues, the hunt for the Hesperus can truly begin. The galaxy's finest investigators and code breakers are chipping away at what is thought to be a cypher which, possibly in combination with the listening posts' locations, might reveal the Hesperus' whereabouts.

    H1 A3:-L_,C3:+AF_,G2:*-A H2 A2:/B,C1:+BL_,G1:+DF_ H3 A1:-AX_,C2:*-A,G3:-D_

One possible rearrangement of this data:

    A1: -AX_ C1: +BL_ G1: +DF_ A2: /B C2: *-A G2: *-A A3: -L_ C3: +AF_ G3: -D_

Want to aid in the search? Claim the glory of being the first to set eyes on the long lost vessel? Unearth the mystery behind humanity's first encounter with the Thargoids?

Now's your chance! Do some digging by yourself, or join the hunt with the galaxy's finest.

    Best of luck commanders! o7

CQC would be amazing if it was similar to frontline solutions

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 06:45 AM PDT

Even though it wouldn't change any gameplay, having something as simple as a NPC at some stations that you can talk too that takes you to the CQC gamemode would boost the player count so much and make it feel like its part of the same world. I know it's very easy to access CQC now it's in the main menu but imo it hasn't made much difference on player count, having it be part of the world would make it more appealing, like when you're at a station and it has a CQC NPC you can go and play a round or two to pass the time.

Have it be something like a promoter for the tournaments that offers rewards for performing well. Maybe something like combat bonds in frontline that you can hand in for credit, as to make it feel even more connected and that work you do

New Tool: Elite Dangerous Personal Assistant

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 09:09 AM PDT

    Download Link and Guide

As a pilot who plays exclusively in VR, a common frustration is having to type System names into the Galaxy Map, as well as needing to flip over to tools like https://inara.cz every time you need to find a Material Trader or Technology Broker. While an annoyance in the flat game, it's excruciating in VR, even with the advent of virtual desktops and keyboards. However, after some development, it became apparent that it may be useful to more than just VR players.

The basic premise is that EDPA will track keybinds globally, and based on configuration, populate a list of systems. This list can then be navigated with "Prev" and "Next" keybinds, reading each one aloud. A "Type" keybind will simulate keyboard input and type out the system name. This is specifically intended for entry into the Galaxy Map search box. These keybinds can in turn be easily triggered by the likes of Voice Attack, Joystick Gremlin, Autohotkey or a space hamster trained to press keys on the appropriate olfactory command.

    Features include:

    • A custom predefined list, either a manual TODO or imported from route finders like the Neutron Plotter.
    • Finding the nearest Material Trader / Tech Broker / Factors / Repair
    • Listing valuable (terraformable/earthlike/water/ammonia) bodies in a system that you have FSS scanned but not yet mapped
    • Automatic large ship detection. It will not send you to an outpost when in a large ship
    • Limits by range and supercruise distance
    • Parsing of historical journal files as well as real time tracking.
    • Optional download of station and system data from EDSM's nightly dump.

Given this is my first time writing and releasing an Electron project, teething issues are expected. But it works on my machine! There is a Discord channel for it that I will actively track should this thread go stale. Given that it seemed silly to set up a Discord server for a simple tool, that server serves a new squadron/wing/community that I am also launching concurrently to solve the other typing problem in VR - talking to other people.

    A Plea to Alpha Testers

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 03:57 PM PDT

    Hi folks,

We've had several posts over the last week about the state of the alpha, including some reports of bugs and issues. Some posts have been interesting, some funny, and a few that look a little more like angry rants.

    Two requests, please...

    1) remember this is an alpha and you're a playtester.

It is not a finished, polished build. It's not even a beta, but an alpha with some participation. There are going to be balance issues, and bugs, and missing things, and things that just flat don't work. I do get the feeling that some folks signed up thinking this was just a chance to play the finished game months earlier than the rest of us, and this just isn't the case - especially earlier, I'd suggest thinking of yourself as more tester than player. And if that frustrates or surprises you, well, then much like those missions out to Hutton, you should have read the fine print on your mission a little better.

    2) provide that feedback!

When you find a bug or issue or something that doesn't work right (or even something that does work right, but you have an idea on how it could be better!) please, please, put a detailed report on fdev's site for them. Know that if you just put it here (or don't put it at all) that defeats the whole purpose - the best chance we have of getting the best possible game out of odyssey is getting good feedback from the alpha players directly to fdev throughout the process so fdev can do their thing and try to make things better. So please, give the feedback, and give it through the right channel!

That's it, just 2 requests. And to those of you who are already doing so, thank you - you're doing your part to help see the rest of us have a smoother experience, and hopefully having some fun (and getting an early look at the mechanics!) at the same time.

Keep it up! See ya in the black!
