Hot Take : Exploration content is low effort [Odyssey] Posted: 16 Apr 2021 07:07 AM PDT While everyone is going to have their own favorites in Odyssey and I'm sure some people will like the xenobiology aspects of it, compared to what we are getting with combat, the exploration content seems like a very quick afterthought. The combat required some serious work, even if it doesn't compare to hardcore FPS games, creating totally new ground based AI on planets was no small task, especially when considering it has to contend with combined arms. So how does it compare to the other triangle of content? Exploration? A lockpicking minigame with a worryingly small amount of content and a cutting tool to grind mats. While it is alpha, the amount of plants actually concerns me, because we are all finding the same stuff on totally different planets. Not even with any variety to texture or color, it's just the same exact plant. And outside of the hilariously tiny payout per plant, this really shows me that Fdev just doesn't 'get' exploration. Not only did they go with a reactionary minigame, rather than a puzzle, It still ultimately comes down to mindlessly scanning a thing for profit and moving on.Why not let us test the samples? Why not give us various tools to make conclusions about our findings, and then paid for accuracy? We could be making comparisons between samples to find interesting facts about the planet and it's biosphere.Biology should be giving each planet a character, flavor, and a look into the planet's composition. Instead...Everything about exploration content is basically "This thing is here, and yes, I have scanned it" The visual boost to planets, to them, might be the biggest improvement to exploration, and I'm okay with that as it is a big draw to exploring. But the actual gameplay loop is far from ideal and doesn't even come close to the amount of work they put into other elements of the game, especially when compared to combat which brought with it totally new systems and AI. Do explorers really like this sort of content? Maybe I'm the one who doesn't get it, but it seems like a huge oversight to me. [link] [comments]

Just to prove that I could, I made a "Combat Hauler." Posted: 16 Apr 2021 07:45 AM PDT Yep. That's right. I outfitted the worst possible combat ship for combat. Since transferring screenshots from PS4 to PC is an absolute nightmare, here's an exact replica on coriolis.io complete with even the minor engineering I have in place at this time (no, I am not done.) Thought I was joking? Think again. This little combat package comes at the low, low price of just under 1.3 million, and it's worth every single penny. Just imagine the bragging rights you'll have once you deck a Type-6, Sidey, or even a Cobra in what the wiki has called "the worst combat ship in the game!" I'm here to change the meta because I took that message personally. Introducing: the Type-2 Gankmobile! Fit with the best shield generator money can by, it can survive exactly 2 blows from a missile, or about a minute of sustained kinetic fire! It recharges slower than I wake up in the morning! To counteract this, it comes fitted with a shield cell bank, capable of recharging half of its shield at the cost of your Life Support, FSD, Cargo hatch, Sensors, Engines, and all other internal modules due to them melting from the heat! The shield might not be much to write home about, but that leads me to my next segment: armor. This bad boy (WITHOUT engineering, mind you!) manages to punch just above its own weight in terms of armor, boasting an impressive 610 integrity! With the reinforcements in place, not only can it survive a missile blast, but for once, beam lasers aren't automatically a death sentence! That's right, this little Ganker has exactly 5% thermal resistance! That's almost 2 DPS reduced! With a woefully unimpressive armor hardness rating of 20, we've taken the liberty of fitting module reinforcements as well! After all, what good is an FSD if it's been annihilated by a rail gun? The engines are also mediocre, but hey, it's still better than the Imperial Cutter! That's right, not only can you fly circles around your larger opponents, but you can look cool doing it too! With a somewhat impressive top speed of 330 m/s, it's kind of amazing how fast this little thing can move! Of course, there's the A-Rate FSD, because what good is a bounty hunting ship if you can't reach your destination? Fitted with the finest FSD in the galaxy, there are plans underway to engineer the ever-loving shit out of it and make it even better! Boasting an already impressive 16.84 LY jump range with full combat build, we're estimating ~25 LY of jump potential after engineering! Just keep an eye on that fuel tank however, because it does a worse job of holding its fuel than I do holding my own self esteem! And if that still isn't enough to win you over... I'm not finished. What good would a combat ship be if it didn't carry any weapons? Boasting exactly 1 small hardpoint, the smallest of any ship, it was a tough call deciding what to fit this deadly little fighting machine with. Our choice? The Railgun! Taking full advantage of it's rating 4 maneuverability, we fitted the best small fixed weapon there is, next to a Plasma Accelerator! As a hitscan weapon, you'll have no trouble landing killing blows on that pesky Cobra! The best part? With the highest armor piercing value in the game, not even the large ships are safe from this beast's weapon! Take out those pesky powerplants in style! The best part? It can be yours with the low, low rebuy of only 60k credits! Available now at your local Starport! Order today! ...you still here? Good. PSA: DO NOT OUTFIT A HAULER FOR COMBAT. This is, without a doubt, the single biggest waste of time I've ever come up with, and I loved every second of it. I carry zero regrets whatsoever. While this would be a hilarious ganking ship in open, there's not a chance in hell it would survive a real firefight against even a Sidey. Hell, a BELUGA could take this thing on, and that ship is literally a whale! All in all, this has been a fun, useless, and hilarious waste of time, and I hope you all consider the Type-2 Gankmobile as your next purchase. Have a nice day! :) [link] [comments]

Posted: 16 Apr 2021 11:23 AM PDT We could put the collective brainpower behind our compulsive grinding to good use. I remember "Planet Hunters," where you'd look at the brightness of stars recorded over time by the Kepler space telescope to look for regular dips signifying the eclipse of an exoplanet. Surely there are other crowdsourcing projects out there for which minigames could be adapted to process real data? It'd certainly add variety to what we do and make it a bit more rewarding knowing the time invested is actually accomplishing something. It'd be good PR if nothing else. [link] [comments]
