    • If players perform a melee attack or throw grenades, obstructive defects block their visor
    • Graphical artefacts are present on assets (such as player arm & organics) when visor is on
    • Collection mission objective will only update for one person in the instance
    • Players sometimes experience that missions are not showing as completed until they re-log
    • Dropships will sometimes attempt to dock with settlements rather than drop players in a Conflict Zone

Odyssey should add Fleet Carrier concourses/interiors

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 01:06 PM PDT

Okay, so I highly doubt that anyone from Fdev will actually read this. But on the slightest chance that my ramblings actually make it up the chain to someone in charge, here I am.

In the Odyssey FAQ, there was a question regarding fleet carrier interiors. Fdev responded something like: "We have nothing more to add to this at the current time."

As this is a classic Fdev non-answer, I'm pretty sure it's safe to assume that Odyssey won't feature carrier interiors at launch.

Since they already went through the trouble of figuring out how to implement station, outpost, and settlement interiors, they should really also add a basic interior to Fleet carriers as well. I'm sure that most commanders who are excited about Odyssey and own a carrier share this opinion.

However, some commanders are against it.

I've seen that the most common argument against carrier interiors is that it wouldn't be a good use of Fdev's time due to the fact that only a small fraction of players actually owning them.

And to that I say, grind some more credits you plebs! /jk

No but in all seriousness, I don't actually see that argument panning out for a couple of reasons:

    1) A lot of commanders already use our carriers as a social meetup point to wing up with friends or travel somewhere as a group. Since this purpose was a large selling point for station interiors, it would make perfect sense to give carriers this feature as well.

    2) Because of the above point, many commanders who don't own carriers still regularly interact with and benefit from them. This kind of nullifies that main argument against this feature.

There are a couple of other reasons that I believe would make carrier interiors worth implementing, but since they don't directly relate to the above counterpoint I'll just list them down here:

    • The new xenobiology gameplay loop. Carriers already have universal cartographics, so why not add a place for turning in our gene samples too? And since this is an Odyssey-exclusive feature, it would make sense to keep the theme of turning it in on foot. Having this on carriers would be very useful to explorers, similar to how universal cartographics is essential for exploration-based carriers.

    • Carrier interiors would partially lessen the blow of not getting ship interiors for a lot of commanders. Fdev knows that a lot of people wanted ship interiors. And while I don't speak for the entire community, I know that personally I would be less disappointed if I could at least walk around in my carrier.

    • You know those fancy carrier jump animations? Yeah, the ones that we can only actually see if we're getting left behind by our carriers? Many commanders (including me) would cry tears of joy if we could stand on the bridge during carrier jumps. I would do that every single time I moved my carrier. This feature alone would make carrier interiors completely worth it, forgetting everything else I said.

    TL;DR

Carrier interiors should be implemented with Odyssey, because many people would benefit from them including commanders who don't own a carrier. And for many other reasons, listed above.

But what do you guys think? Any other comments or counter-arguments are welcome.

Let's look inside of a thargoid ship cockpit!

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 04:40 AM PDT

Ok so, I managed to do a screenshot at the internal cockpit of a thargoid ship, IDK if someone managed to do this before, but I am really curious about how the thargoids look like and their "style", aside from the biotech.

I hoped to find something relevant but it doesn't seem to be anything like that, I'll post it anyway so you guys can see it by yourself without risking your life lol.

    Safe journeys, commanders!

If you're looking to play Frontier: First Encounters (third game in the Elite series, just before Dangerous), here's everything you need in one post!

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 06:26 AM PDT

Step one: Download FFED3D (link from my personal Google Drive)

Step two: Unpack the .7z, start the game with FFED3DAJ.exe

    Step three: ...that's it?

Yes, that's it! I've gone through all the hassle of downloading and setting up this somewhat complicated Frontier: First Encounters Direct3D remake mod, which even includes HD models for most ships, which you can toggle on and off at any time in-game with CTRL+F6. Best of all, it runs absolutely perfectly on 64-bit computers, which is an achievement given the fact that the original FFE was a 16-bit program, and thus any 64-bit Windows has a seizure trying to run it.

If you want, you could load up my save file that's sitting around in the Commandr folder somewhere. I have an Asp Explorer with a 4MW beam laser and 5 shield generators. Nothing fancy but pretty neat anyway.

    Controls

Another personal touch of mine is setting up the controls for ya. No more of this messy A+Z+comma+period business. If you want to set up your own controls, you can find it in "ffed3daj.cfg", or turn "UseKeybinds" to 0 if you'd (somehow) like to use FFE's default controls.

    Important controls are as follows:

    Thrust forward/backward/left/right: W/S/A/D

    Thrust up/down: R/F

    Roll left/right: Q/E

Change engine mode: Z (this basically toggles FA on, off, autopilot, and engine off. Press it to take off)

    Landing gear: L

    Missile: X

    ECM: C

Refuel: V (this transfers hydrogen fuel or military fuel from your cargo to your engine. Military fuel turns into radioactives after use)

    Hyperspace jump: J

Fly by holding RMB and dragging across the screen. You aim it like any FPS game (though you might want to turn off the inverted up/down in the game's pause menu settings). I usually fly with Set Speed (think of it like flight assist) Off, as FFE's mouse controls are very intuitive. Most of the menus are also easily navigated with the mouse.

To get around to places, open your Navigation Computer by clicking the question mark on the bottom right (the equivalent of pressing 1 in Dangerous). Click anywhere you'd like to go to, and tap Z until it goes to Autopilot. And there ya go, that should be it. Fast forward the game by clicking the little arrows in the bottom left and you'll be where you want to go in no time (there was no Supercruise in this game; getting anywhere requires fast forwarding). The guide below explains this whole thing much better.

The only control problems you'll face are that D and F also scroll the messages up and down. Unfortunately there is no way to fix this to my knowledge. Page Up/Down will scroll chat back where you need it, but if you insist on using WASD controls you'll have to get used to your chat scrolling as you dogfight. It's not so bad I think

    Guide

If you're totally new to FFE, I absolutely recommend THIS wonderfully-written beginner's guide. It's just about the best thing I've read about this game, and without it I doubt I'd even be out of the starter ship (I took my time quite a bit so I sorta stopped at the 9th run to Soholia since the plague ended, ah well)

    TLDR

I have here a fully functioning revamp of Frontier: First Encounters called FFED3D, set up with custom WASD controls and AndyJ's HD models (which can be toggled off with Ctrl+F6). Unlike most versions of FFE, FFED3D will run on modern computers without needing an emulator. If you need a guide on how to start in FFE, here you go

Have fun out there, and see you all in Gateway! And don't forget your very own Panther Clipper ;)
