This planet is literally at a rings edge. It is so close I couldn’t fly between the ring and planet in supercruise.

Ship interiors: Suggestion for an initial, low effort first step.

    Posted: 02 May 2021 08:38 AM PDT

A lot of us want ship interiors. Some people don't. But even for those people, it's hard to deny ships would add huge setpieces to the game that could provide onfoot mission spaces: Salvage missions to recover items from destroyed ship wrecks in space or even maybe retrieve whole ships. Combat scenarios, such as boarding a ship on a station's landing pad (see no other set pieces needed!) To dispatch a terrorist or criminal mastermind.

Being able to walk under our ships is giving many of us a first time appreciation for the size and scale of our ships. Some people have even suggested that large ships present a challenge, in that it extends the time it might take to reach the cockpit from the exterior.

Personally? That's what I call gameplay! Suddenly if you're doing some kind of ground based sabotage mission, you might have a lot of incentive to pick a smaller ship where you can reach the cockpit more quickly.

In any case, here's an idea to somewhat mollify those of us desperate to explore our ships on foot while also not requiring Frontier to do significant extra work to the game WHILE ALSO starting to implement some of the systems that will be needed for full interiors.

Right now, all ships have a cockpit modeled. The disembark button should stand commanders up from their chair, and the rear door or exit door of the cockpit should serve as the exit to the ship. Likewise, when boarding the ship, any of the externally accessible boarding doors should trigger a transition to the ship interior. While this doesn't represent the scope of what players want, it would be an extremely nice first step (heh) without requiring Frontier to produce a dramatic number of new assets and could be implemented fairly quickly. It would also allow frontier to begin implementing the technology players will use once full ship interiors exist. For example: the landing ramps and ladders could be made functional with this release.

I think this would make a huge difference. It would allow commanders to have at least some of the feeling of being inside their ships, and create something of an interior space (that already exists in the game art asset wise!) While not requiring any current dramatic changes to anything. Plus it would allow Frontier to start ironing the bugs out of whatever boarding systems they're creating before expanding to the larger interiors of the ships.

Anyway, it's just a suggestion, but one I would dearly love to see implemented. (as a precursor to full interiors of course.)
