I accidently left my game on overnight and came back to this.

Needed a new hat so I decided to make it Dangerous

    You (FDEV) broke my heart

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 11:04 AM PDT

This is in response to folks who keep complaining about posts about people complaining/leaving the game. Here's some perspective:

I REALLY wanted to like Odyssey and I REALLY want to like Elite Dangerous. On paper it has everything I want in a an online space MMO. It just feels like the game puts too many hurdles in that prevent me from fully enjoying the game. Sure the grind is a bit tedious, but what makes the game a lot of fun for me is being able to wing up with friends and help each other out, with Odyssey we can now have in-person multi-crew? Sign me the f**k up.

I got so hyped I re-downloaded Horizons (which I hadn't played in months) and started the grind again before Alpha was released; getting money and materials to engineer my "perfect Odyssey ship". I spent about 5-6 weeks playing Horizons before Odyssey was "officially released" just setting myself up to play Odyssey for maximum enjoyment for me and my friends.

Let me break down what a typical Odyssey session with me two of my friends go:

    - Meet up at station, friend grabs a mission (settlement restore)

    - Hop into a ship together jump to another star system, oops one friend didn't make it (Orange Sidewinder).

    - Wait around for friend to reconnect, he gets in his own ship and meets on the planet.

    - Jumping from supercruise to the settlement? Orange Sidewinder.

    - Meet up again at the settlement. Two of us can see each other, but the third we see his wing signal but don't see him. He sees a bunch of scavengers, we don't. He's under attack and needs help, but we can't because we don't see any enemies.

    - Friend escapes, jumps out-then back in. Still can't see him (despite he's on our team).

    - Everyone jumps out, re-log, re-form team, go back to settlement.

    - Go into the settlement, friend who's the mission host sees a data port. UI gets stuck and he can't initiate the download, interact with anything or leave the menu.

    - Re-log, everything in the settlement de-spawns and he no longer has the power regulator.

    - Jump out, 2nd friend gets orange sidewinder. Re-log, stuck on planet and we can't find him (see his signal, but don't see him and he can't see us). Friend calls apex.

    - Jump back to "home" system, Orange Sidewinder

    - Pick 2nd settlement restore mission, refer to previous steps to get an idea of how the game "flow" went, except this time we were able to restore power to the settlement (no loot though).

    - Can't hand in completed mission due to UI bug.

The above gameplay loop still persists even after 4 updates. I didn't even mention the graphical glitches or the time when an SRV was clipped inside my friend's ship, or the screen going completely black when trying to board an SRV.

Now imagine this gameplay loop happens EVERY TIME you play with your friends. You spend about half the time re-logging and the other half exploring around wondering what happened to everything. We even had a settlement that wouldn't power up so we couldn't complete the mission.

I hadn't even mentioned the time my ship "despawned" and I was unable to use Inner Astra to use any of my ships. Or the fact that my Odyssey ship that I spent weeks building before Odyssey released complete disappeared from my fleet. I put in a ticket, but it took over 3 weeks to get a response, by then I was already frustrated with the game and I uninstalled.

We're vocal about our displeasure because we had such high hopes and had so much to look forward to.

We post that we're leaving because we want Frontier to know that this isn't just some new player that wanted to check out the game then decided it wasn't for them. These posts are coming from dedicated players with hundreds of hours in the game who are breaking up with the game.

It hurts, a scaled-down version of making a decision to leave an abusive BF/GF. We had some trust in Frontier with these promises prior to release (which we now know were empty). So it's only fitting that you at least say farewell.

To those who are genuinely enjoying the game, I envy you. I really do. I wish I could get that much enjoyment. But the sting of being tricked into buying a $40 game only to constantly run into issues that prevent you from playing the game is just too much. At some point you need to look out for number one right?

So with a sad and depressing wave I will be leaving Elite, I can't handle this much frustration when gaming is supposed to be my "relaxing time"; which is a shame, I could see the grind loop in Odyssey something I could really get into. I'll remember the good times fondly but unfortunately I have to move on for my own mental health and sanity. (at least the vaccine rollout seems promising from my personal mental health's standpoint).

    Farewell and Godspeed commanders

Guardian-Thargoid Battlefield Discovered! | Galnet News Article: June 18th, 3307

    *Pilots Federation ALERT*

An Anaconda from the Hesperus megaship has been found at a historical battlefield on the moon Trapezium Sector YU-X c1-2 1a.

The discovery was made by pilots who tracked down a series of signal beacons, following instructions provided by the anonymous 'Salvation'. The beacons were deployed by the Hesperus during its voyage nearly 200 years ago.

The Anaconda, named Proteus, was one of the megaship's secondary vessels and had been outfitted for long-range exploration. It was used by an Azimuth Biochemicals science team to flee the Hesperus after the megaship was overtaken by saboteurs from rival company Pharmasapien.

Upon landing, the Proteus was converted into a research facility to study the ancient structures and wreckage on the moon. The proximity of both Guardian and Thargoid technology suggests this was the site of a battle fought by the two civilizations over a million years ago, although in 3113 neither species had yet been identified.

Professor Alba Tesreau of Aegis Research gave this statement:

"This is a significant xenoarchaeological find – physical evidence of the war between the Guardians and the Thargoids. Our advance teams are conducting preliminary surveys, and a megaship is being prepared. Following the Alexandria's tragic disappearance, we hope this may serve as a fresh source of Guardian artifacts for our anti-xeno research program."

For the love of all that is sane, FDEV please make a 'lock equipment' button (like every other modern game out there) or at least 2 layers of "ARE YOU SURE?" before allowing people to sell their equipment or ships, and make storing the replaced module the default instead of selling.

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 09:55 AM PDT

I'm not going to go into a dialogue about the state of the UI, that's been said enough. But the fact that when you replace modules from your storage, the DEFAULT setting is to SELL the outgoing module is extremely bad flow design. I have friends who have accidentally sold CG gear or G5+effect modules, I have also done the same (Thankfully in my case it was simply a 5H guardian FSD booster than can be rebought at many stations, but it sure caused cold sweat thinking of what could have happened if my mistake happened on my previous swap of a double engineered CG rail gun). I'm bringing this up because one of these said friends ragequit and uninstalled the game when he accidentally sold 3 very valuable CG modules when he thought the setting was on store (he was tired, and a little drunk and probably shouldn't have been playing through this mess of a UI at the time)

"Just rebuy the sold module you say?", unfortunately if you accidentally sell your module while swapping stored modules on a carrier upon which many players make their home, and said carrier (applies to buying/swapping modules in a station as well) does not have the part or category stocked, you CANNOT rebuy the sold module, its gone, forever. I'm sure this is an oversight, but it is one that needs attention. Swapping ships is slightly better in that the swap and sell button are two completely separate buttons, although they are the same size and color... but more on that later.

The net result is that every time I swap a module, it's a stress inducing affair in which I need to check, double check, and spellcheck the meaning of "the replaced module will be stored" on a thesaurus to ensure I am not misunderstanding anything before I click the equip module button. This is unnecessary anguish caused to players and makes playing the game not fun in this area.

I know you guys are gonna fix the UI, eventually, but in the meantime here are my suggestions on fixes in order of simplicity and ease of implementation first, followed by more complex ones which will vastly improve game design, fun and flow, but can be implemented incrementally:

    1. Make storing replaced modules the default setting every time a replace action is initiated, the player will need to actively select "sell" every transaction - So what if the player intended to sell? Oops oh well I need to go to stored modules and sell it from there, extra 5 clicks. This is virtually a non-annoyance, most people I know would rather click the safety switch repeatedly when selling multiple gear than risk an accidental and permanent loss. It's not perfect but will prevent countless accidents since it requires an active motion from the player to initiate a sale. This is a super easy win, a simple tweak on the server side with virtually no further programming involved... unless the setting was hard coded, in which case I don't know what to say...

    2. Add an "Are you sure you want to sell?" popup when switching the mode from "replace" to "sell".

    3. Add one more "The module/ship will be sold, are you sure?" popup when there is ANY sell action on ships or modules.

    4. Make the sell button a different smaller and colored bright red with crosshatch design. This will help people who may not be paying attention or are color blind.

    5. Change the menu color to red/crosshatch when the switch is flipped from store to sell. Even the most dunderheaded fool will notice what they are about to do, and if they still do it, they have no right to complain after that.

    6. Make a 'lock this ship/module' switch, in which the player has to deliberately unprotect the ship/module before it can be sold (will disable the ability to sell on replace)

I know there are 50 million other things that need fixing in Odyssey, and I will be the first to say there are many higher priority issues, but just implementing suggestion 1 (which is super easy) will already go a long way to making the game fun instead of stressful, getting 2 and 3 will make it even better, and when you get to 4-6 people will praise you for good game flow design (I know I will).

Edit: I wanted to add - thanks to u/Backflip_into_a_star's comment below reminding me - that this problem is exacerbated by the fact that we only have 120 module storage slots as an absolute number, and it ends up the more advanced players buy a dozen 'storage ships' and may be constantly moving modules around. Because of this you create a near statistical certainty that people will eventually mess up and do something that will make them hate the game and themselves.

    • The solution that will go much further to relieve this situation is to either give a much much more stored module slots (like 500-1000), or at the very least make it so that slots are treated like ship slots (40 a location), and so we get 120 slots per location, if this is intended gameplay design.

Goshdarnit. I went back to horizons finally after stubbornly trying to make odyssey work in VR since launch and it works so good by comparison it just made me angrier. Ultra, 90fps.

Regarding the rumor that the system where Raxxla is has already been visited

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 02:59 PM PDT

I was intruiged by the amount of people who brought up the possibility that raxxla was visited, and how much of the player base regarded as a baseless rumour without any source. It still perhaps might just be a rumour; but after some digging here's the source (https://m.twitch.tv/clip/SnappyScaryMousePupper) of it folks. Apparently Michael Brooks said this himself at Lavecon (Unspecified year) according to this commander.

Good day! I've decided to make a quick survey to collect some technical data from the community regarding Odyssey version 4; please note that I'm no way affiliated with FDev and I've made this pool mainly for curiosity. All details are in the description of the form linked below \/

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 11:43 AM PDT

Here's an update on my FDL model. I still have a fair bit of detail work to get done and the print quality isn't helping. However I'm happy with my novice paint application so far. I wish I could get official prints/kits from FDev.

It was a long road, but I finally got her. Now, to turn her into an Explorer and make my run to Beagle Point.

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 12:24 AM PDT

So is just no one gonna do the CG for a module that hasn't been available for over year?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 05:14 AM PDT

Fdev is practically throwing us a bone for exploration. The Advanced DSS has a 2X probe radius and a normal DSS only has a 1.5x radius after engineering, and they are wanting to make it available PERMENANTLY through tech brokers. It will be super easy to achieve if you buy synthetic reagents. they become abundant when you go towards the outer parts of the bubble like Jekhowsky Installation in Tawilo.

If you are having trouble with getting into the CG, switch to Horizons, join it, and then come back to Odyessy.

    DON'T PASS THIS UP PEOPLE.

Pulsating Star With Fat Solar Ejections? Swoilz PA-B a13-3

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 02:25 PM PDT

I threw together a 1-stop engineered 63LY (72 w/Guardian) Diamondback Explorer build requiring only Felicity Farseer. Includes build, materials list and instructions to acquire.

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 11:41 AM PDT

    Hey, guys

In a new account, I've been running around in a 23LY Cobra Mk III collecting materials, meta alloys and exploration cash and in the process of making myself a materials list for the best DBX build I could make at Felicity Farseer, it occurred to me you might find it useful. Materials courtesy of Coriolis.io and Inara.cz. I'm sure there's a faster way to do this, but this includes stocking up on a ton of materials you'll want for further engineering.

    Build: https://s.orbis.zone/ff3x

Build includes enough power to handle the Guardian FSD booster if you decide to unlock it later. Where to buy it when you get back (type Deciat into the reference system box and click "find"): https://eddb.io/station?s=5&m=1281,1122,1529,1245,1456,900,937,980,1007,1047,1087,1201

Gear Required: Cheap ship (hauler, Cobra III, etc) with a Class A FSD, detailed surface scanner, SRV bay, biggest fuel scoop and one cargo rack to hold the meta alloys for Farseer. Shield's not a bad idea either. Do this in solo mode or you may get ganked.

Materials required, including the experimental effects listed at the bottom. We're taking one trip to get meta-alloys and materials since they're close to each other as well as earn enough exploration cash along the way to buy the DBX. Bring a detailed surface scanner so you get points of interest and don't have to futz with coordinates.

IN ORDER (for shortest trip, ~ 800LY round trip if you start from Farseer's system, Deciat):

Manufactured materials: Hyades Sector DR-V c2-23 planet A 5 "Dav's Hope" (from 20 youtube videos). Reload and repeat until you get bored. If you plan to do more engineering, you can't really have enough but don't run your SRV out of fuel because you'll need some for the Jameson crash site and meta alloys.

Meta-Alloys: Hyades Sector AQ-Y d81 planet C 2 "Thargoid barnacle 3" (from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SYTJOOcSGA). You only need 1 to unlock Farseer.

Encoded materials: HIP 12099 planet 1 B "Jameson Crash Site" (from 20 youtube videos). Reload and repeat until you're full of the grade 5 materials. Should take under an hour, maybe even 30 minutes.

Raw materials: We don't need a ton and the crystal shard sites are too far away for our ~20LY jump range, so just find some Selenium near HIP 12099 or Deciat using this guide and trade it for what you need: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4h9eY9Iwhik

From HIP 12099, if you still need cash to buy the DBX, do some exploring on the way back (youtube "road to riches"): https://spansh.co.uk/riches/results/1C07AD02-D05B-11EB-A968-8CC394EB4526?from=HIP%2012099&loop=0&max_results=15&radius=25&range=20&to=Deciat

Note: You'll need to explore 1 system to get the invite from Farseer

Once back near Deciat, we need materials traders. https://inara.cz/nearest-stations/?ps1=Deciat&pi13=&pi14=0&pi15=0&pi16=&pi1=0&pi18=0&pi19=0&pi17=0&pa1%5B25%5D=1&pi8=&pi9=0&pi3=&pi4=0&pi5=0&pi6=0&pi7=0&pi23=0

You need to visit one each for raw, encoded and manufactured and trade whatever you've collected for the list below, plus a few extras of each in case my math is off. o7, commanders.

    Shopping List:

Data: Atypical Disrupted Wake Echoes: 9 Strange Wake Solutions: 4 Eccentric Hyperspace Trajectories: 5 Datamined Wake Exceptions: 10 Specialised Legacy Firmware: 8 Manufactured: Chemical Processors: 6 Chemical Distillery: 4 Chemical Manipulators: 10 Mechanical Scrap: 8 Conductive Ceramics: 4 Galvanising Alloys: 3 Salvaged Alloys: 6 Hybrid Capacitors: 3 Proto Light Alloys: 2 Phase Alloys: 4 Mechanical Equipment: 2 Mechanical Components: 4 Raw: Phosphorus: 6 Manganese: 10 Arsenic: 10 Sulphur: 2 Germanium: 6 Iron: 5 Chromium: 4
