I can see why CQC is dead and nobody touches it.

    Posted: 24 Jul 2021 10:00 AM PDT

After several hundred hours playing, I decided to queue CQC in the background as I was doing my missions and finally got into a game.

So you're telling me, FD in their infinite wisdom, decided that matchmaking is just a clusterfuck of "whoever turns up gets to play".

I'm brand new to CQC, managed to get to level 4 after about 10 battles and quit.

Playing deathmatch with 5 other players and the same two guys rinsed everyone else. I checked their stats, both 60,000+ CQC kills each.

They have the best ships, all the unlocks, they can drain your shields in 3 seconds and kill you in another 3 before you've even drained 2 rings of their shields.

It's a shame, because the concept could actually be very fun, but alas, FD fucked it with the execution. Now I see why nobody plays and the wait times are 30+ minutes for a match.

    Your home station?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2021 02:13 PM PDT

Just a general question but what's your home station? Mine used to be fox enterprise in lft-625 but that 45,000 fly to the blinking thing hurt especially when you had pirate's on your butt. Now I usually chill in Sete at Fox Dock.

How much money do explorers make: a quick report

    Posted: 24 Jul 2021 05:06 AM PDT

I just returned from my 5th expedition. For newer players or curious new explorers, I thought I'd give you a breakdown of how much money you make on that trip, and how long it takes to do so.

    The ship

    Asp Explorer "Foxgerald's Pride II"

    Jump range ~70ly

    The route

Gentle curve from the Bubble to the core, explore the far side of Sag A* for a while, drop down below it, then a big arc back to the bubble.

    Total jumps: 665

Total distance travelled: 66,050 light years

    July 7 - July 24, 2021. 40 hours of play time.

    The method

    1. Limit jumps to KGBFOAM, neutrons, black holes. This doesn't make for the highest likelihood of systems with big payouts, but it does mean you don't have to think about fuel much. Pick your priorities based on your play style.
    2. Honk every system
    3. FSS all rockies, high metal contents, metal rich, water, earth-like, ammonia
    4. DSS all terraformables, all water, all earth-like, all ammonia within about 130,000 light seconds
    5. DSS many landable worlds, if they're close
    6. Land if you detect biologicals

    The take

In total this trip got me 453,757,161 credits from universal cartographics, plus a measly 4,829,200 credits from my genomics data.

So in total that came to 11,464,659 credits/hour. Not too bad. There are probably more efficient or lucrative methods of exploration. Keen to hear if anybody knows of a better one.

There are certainly more lucrative ways to spend your time in the game, but exploration has its own rewards.

Lore-wise, exactly "is* Glide? How does it work?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2021 08:26 AM PDT

Glide mode appears to be something in between supercruise and normal space, used for closing in on a planet to land. There's sufficient evidence to show that glide isn't just falling really fast in normal space while the ship's speed limiter temporarily allows you to exceed your maximum speed:

    1) When gliding with Flight Assist off, your trajectory will still always be straight forward as you turn, just like being supercruise, implying the FSD is being used to some degree to propel your ship (as the FSD only propels you forward)

    2) When you turn hard enough while gliding, your pilot can blackout or redout due to G-forces, implying your ship in glide can pull more Gs than your ship's vertical thrusters are capable of generating, which means an external force (the FSD) must be propelling you

However we know glide isn't just supercruise because you audibly hear the FSD dropout sound when you enter glide, and while in supercruise, your ship experiences no G effects from acceleration or moving like you do in glide. Also, while in supercruise, your ship's thrusters are off and do not respond, unlike glide where you can visibly see your thrusters and even boost (though to no real effect)

This leads me to think glide mode in Elite is actually achieved by the ship using both its main thrusters for thrust and its FSD to compress spacetime in front of it slightly to achieve higher speeds. As the FSD is unable to fully function when too close to a solid mass, glide must've been developed by the modern FSD's inventors as a very limited form of frame-shift able to be used to close in to a planetary mass before full FSD shutdown

    But that's just a theory...

How do you guys handle being targeted by two ships at the same time?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2021 11:06 AM PDT

When you're in a conflict zone or some kind of larger scale battle and two ships from two different directions are firing on you. How do you deal with that?

Do you try to fight back or do you run away?

NOTE: I'm in an unengineered Viper Mk III which I now know is not advised for Conflict Zones (I was at a reformatory attacked by pirates). My shields were gone before I could even turn to face them.
