I can see Odyssey going the way of No Man's Sky

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 02:48 AM PDT

No Man's Sky was one of the worst recieve games ever when you compare it to pre release hype, however now, the game is flourishing and the team at Hello games have performed what can only be described as a miracle, seeing as before NMS a game that was dead on launch like NMS was shunned and written off completely by the majority of people.

With the way Frontier have been going recently, since about update 5, I can see Odyssey going the same way, Frontier have changed the way they communicate with the players for the better. More detailed patch notes and dev blogs make it easy to see what is being worked on.

Yes the game was released in an awful state. And I'm not defending them for that, but what I am saying is I believe with all the updates coming in, we will have something amazing on our hands in about 6-8 months, and some are going to say 'that's not good enough' and I get your point, I do... But people said the same thing about NMS when they got new content.... And Hello Games response to them was?... And MORE content.

    I pray I'm right

[Serious] Elite dangerous needs more of a story.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 04:14 AM PDT

Elite. To many people, the word means nothing. But to the few that do, we think of the space game spanning 4 decades of some of the most advanced technologies used for space simulation.

The most recent instalment, Elite Dangerous, has a player-base of nearly 17 million players, for a game released 6 years ago. Quite a few players. In many people's opinion, including a YouTuber known as TheYamiks, the game has incredible lore potential, but Frontier developments choose to simply shut down player events to progress what little story there is (remember the Gnosis) and to really not bother with story progression, instead choosing to say "It uses player based progression" meaning they let the player simply sit alone, trying to work out what on earth you are meant to do. The game literally has more information on your character in the online manual!

Really though, what we as a player base are feeling is disappointment. We sit and grind and grind to get to a point that we can experience some event, that isn't even made by the game, and the developers decide to say no, and then have the audacity to give us an inactive thargoid base. Like that makes up for finding a way to explore a whole new sector, that all the maps, and the tiny little pieces of a story that you seem to be no longer even making, lead to. Really, it's honestly not too hard for a company like frontier to create a bit of a story arc.
So, what do I want? I think that some more story is necessary. I don't mean adding more species of alien, I mean finishing your last ideas. Thargoids, take us to their home base, unlock the cone sector. Give us some Raxxla information, so we know more about the dark wheel. To be honest, if you released this as a paid expansion or even a whole new game, I'd be first in line, because your game is incredibly special. The feeling that it gives for a new player is intoxicating. All you want is more. But the problem is, there really isn't anymore. Indulge us, give us some more story, because if you are going to make an exploration game or a space sim game, give us a climax. Give us something to work for. The player base is hungry for more. So indulge us, please.

If you share my opinion on the fact that Elite is in great need of more of a story, sign the petition. I'd really appreciate this getting through to frontier.

Can we hear it for frontier support?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 12:09 PM PDT

I've been dealing with Frontier support lately.

Can I just say, for a company that isn't getting an ongoing payment from me, they've gone above and beyond trying to solve an issue that's probably not even anything to do with their software. They've got back to me 6 different times with (actually quite good) suggestions on things to try to try and get ED working properly again on my PC - a PC!

PCs as we all know are kept in trolls fetid basements strewn with mouldy pizza boxes and cans of monster, with swarms of flies buzzing around the filthy conditions. They're often assembled out of broken parts smeared with jam and sourced off ebay from down the back of a meth addicts sofa, like some sort of sticky drunken lego puzzle.

And these guys are plugging away every day, trying to get these mystery assemblages of potentially incompetent strangers dodgy electronics working right over email. It must be a thankless task.

Now, in fairness, they haven't managed to solve my problem, but then I've worked with PCs for over 20 years and I haven't either.

So a shoutout to Support Agents Rosetta, Ikaros, Viking, JUICE and Vostok for all their helpful suggestions.

Also, I think I have to buy more parts for my dodgy PC.

Have you any stories of any stupid self-inflicted problems that frontiers support managed to solve for you?

    Thargoid alert: Coalsack Nebula

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 02:10 AM PDT

Thanks to CMDR Mitch Kruse for being brave enough to go out on an exploration run.

As of 0750 UTC the thargoids have completely taken over Coalsack and if the goids continue on their current trajectory it is assumed that not only are all pilots being pushed back towards the bubble, but that the bubble could possibly come under attack.

Now for a little bit of conspiracy theory: the timing of the Colonia Bridge Project and the fleet carriers going on sale and the megaship super highway on top of the recent thargoid attacks, my assumption is that the thargoids are preparing for a preemptive strike against us, potentially the sudden influx of fleet carriers in the thargoids eyes could be seen as we are amassing an army.

Could you balance a new ship with just 2 huge hard points and still have it be fun without overpowering?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 12:17 PM PDT

I'd like to see some from core dynamics like a giant vulture. 2 huge hard points positioned on either side of the cockpit. How would this fit into what's already there? It seems like they try to make ships slower as there weapons get better but if this was more nimble than a corvette maybe it would be too effective. Would "fixed weapons only" help balance this theoretical abomination?

    Hello fellow cmdrs.

First of it all, apologies for any grammar mistakes, english is not my first language.
I just wanted to share some very nice moments i had this week. I know this is probably nothing to the majority in here but im still stoked. Im a pretty noob cmdr, been playing for about 3 months or so. I just recently got into mining, thanks to the most useful advices from this sub and r/EliteMiners. I was finally able to buy my very first Anaconda (with a proper skin with those arx i've been saving since the begining), fully geared for mining. Still need to engineer it and all of that but it works great this far.
Thanks to that, i have also reached my very first Elite rank! I can now have access to Jameson Memorial and buy stuff for a little less. Win win.

As i was starting to feel a little jaded with mining, last night i saw an article in game about Thargoid attacks in certain systems. I was like "screw it, i'm going to check that out, i can afford some rebuys now". Got my partially engineered Krait MK2 and headed to Merope with absolutely no idea what i was going to see there. Once i arrived, scanned the system and found some "Alien threat level 4", which i suppose is the lowest threat level. Jumped in and was received by 4 Thargoid ships (probably the "Sidewinder" version of thargoids). After the initial scare, i engaged 2 of them, then later the other 2. Barely made out alive to the nearest FC for repairs, as that caustic damage was eating my hull all the way back. Shortly after that i was reading about how you can get rid of that by going into silent running and overheating your ship. Thats a life safer. I then proceeded to the next "Alien threat level 4" and things went a lot smoother. I then got "brave" enough to jump into another system until i found an "AX Conflict Zone". Didnt even think about it and got straight into the fight and boy, that was though. At certain point, after getting only one thargoid ship down, i was getting these messages about "anomalies" into certain modules, then all of the sudden my ship powered down entirely. I was like "what is going onnnnn". Luckly for me i took a certain distance from the fight to get my shields up, so i was sort of safe. Once i got everything back to normal and went into the fight again, took 2 more thargoid ships down, and that was oit for me, i was done for the night. To summarize, 11 Thargoid ships killed, no deaths for this noob cmdr.

All of this happened during this week, im pretty happy and just wanted to share with you all!
