    Trailer: Vodel Scorpion

    Posted: 08 Dec 2021 11:19 AM PST

Hello again CMDR's, back with another vehicle concept. One day in ED I hope to see full atmospheric planets and oceans to explore :D so I made the vehicle I'd want to explore in... The Kingfish Submersible - A-R-V - Aquatic Reconnaissance Vehicle. More here https://www.artstation.com/artwork/eJJrr3

Another day saving people from burning stations, this time in the Evangelis system. Not because I care about people, but because of Fed rank, naturally.

Realized what would be the perfect tool for explorers

    Posted: 08 Dec 2021 01:20 PM PST

I was thinking what a third SRV orientated towards exploration would be like, thinking of a hover-capable quick scouting craft that avoids all the bumps of rough terrain (what came to mind was the basic Soviet fighter from "Battlezone"), just an agile means of traversing a planet's surface to look for the next plants to scan. Was thinking skimmer drones operated on a similar principle. Then it hit me that it needn't be a vehicle at all.

We need to be able to deploy a palm-sized "skimmer" drone of our own. It can lift off, fly up high enough to see what's in the area, being virtually piloted the same way you would a ship. No weapons, just recon. Maybe send out a pulse in lieu of night vision. Let us set waypoints with it. Limit its range with battery life and signal strength. Your foot-mobile self just takes a knee to fiddle with the controls.

I could see this having applications in combat too, especially if more complex objective-focused missions ever get implemented. Spotting targets for ships to bombard, scoping out enemy positions, etc. Maybe even charting out patrol routes before attempting to infiltrate a settlement.

Think of the handheld drone deployed in season 4 of The Expanse to explore the giant Protomolecule structures on Ilus. Maybe even make it a consumable that you have to pilot back to yourself before its battery dies or lose it.

    Buy Python or Wait??

    Posted: 08 Dec 2021 06:07 PM PST

I've recently got back into my life as a trader and remembered I had a decent fortune built up from several months ago on my account. Now I've done some research on some ships, most say to just get the Cutter. I'm not quite at that price range yet and had my eyes set more on the interim Python for its pretty good capacity/

My question is, would it be worth it to just save (and stay in my Type-6) or get the Python then start working toward the Cutter?

Edit: Well that was frickin quick, Python it is!

Double Edit: I agree with comments about sidegrades as in the python has way more usage and you're more likely to not sell it and make enough to just buy a T9 or Cutter outright. I also agree that personally the Python might be the best looking in the game currently. Thank you for all the comments! Appreciate the input o7

    Odyssey needs RPG/strategy/management elements/depth.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2021 02:59 AM PST

For example being able to establish/buy a mining/production/research outpost. Maybe some EVE elements on top - like learning/researching skills to be able to manage outposts more efficiently etc.

Overall my perfect ED experience would involve mix of X series/EVE/NMS. Mix them with the scale and feel of ED and we would have on of the best games ever made.

Or take for example odyssey's ground missions. I would love to roleplay as an assassin travelling from system to system assassinating targets, accumulating bounties on my head if I'm not careful enough. But right now there's no depth to it. Want to assassinate someone silently? You have to use overcharging tool in their face. How dumb is that? Why can't we have a high powered silenced rifle and do it from the distance? (Like ~500m, from outside of the settlement)

I want to love odyssey but it has no soul right now.

Player base will keep declining. The game needs some serious changes/additions/elements. It has such a great potential but it's suffering from very poor, often uninspired, design/execution.

Why isn't intra-system distance factored into Odyssey payouts?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2021 06:54 PM PST

Why is it that on-foot Odyssey missions don't pay out better when the location is really far away from the main star? It appears that whether you have to travel 200ls or 400,000ls, the payout is the same. Is this a bug? Has Frontier mentioned this at all?

Is nobody a little bit weirded out by the fact that we're T-1 day from a new SRV being added to the game and we know nothing about it, not even a glimpse or a highlight stream?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2021 02:48 AM PST

Completely ignoring any kinds of leaks here in this discussion, I try to keep my bar set low where I can and avoid them:

Isn't it a bit odd that Update 9 brings a brand new SRV tomorrow and we know literally nothing about the vehicle other than "It has two seats, it's a combat SRV and also here's a picture of the turret from Dev Update #5!"

Three or so years ago, when a new ship was going to be added, we'd usually get a developer highlight stream, sorta like what we had with the Krait Phantom and the Mamba when they were added where the developers would show us a week or two out from an update the new vehicles, gives us some stats and fly them about on-stream to let people "ooooo and aaahhhh" at them.

In the streams, they're just like "I've had the chance to drive it in testing/behind the scenes but I can't say much more, sorry!", there hasn't really been much in terms of social media posts about the thing either.

Now we're literally a day out from an update and the only image we've seen of the new SRV is a cropped-out image of the turret in a Dev Diary from several months ago. It just sorta feels like the transparency has gone out the window or any kind of excitement for it that could have been built up just isn't there.

And if you don't even read the dev diary or the patch notes, you won't even know that there's a new SRV coming in the update.

Don't get me wrong, I'm super excited to have something new to drive around in because we've been stuck with the Scarab for like 6 years but damn, Frontier are really leaving it down to the wire and just not giving us anything at all about this new vehicle.

If we end up with a new ship being added in a future update and we get this same radio silence or lack of build-up throughout its development, what's the point? I get they're trying to be more open and transparent about things now with these dev updates and stuff but this behaviour of keeping everything lock and key is becoming far from transparent.

You can probably take this entire thread and remove the words 'SRV' and replace it with literally any part of development at the moment and it'd still make sense.

Are there actually any real players around? (xbox)

    Posted: 08 Dec 2021 02:57 PM PST

I started playing a few days ago, and I love the game, but it's as if I've only ever met NPCs so far..? Are there even real players going around? (I'm talking about the open mode, ofc).

Or maybe it's just that I think they're NPCs but they're actually players..? Haha. Idk if there's an easy, obvious way to tell the two apart.

Any advice for jumping as high on the orbital plane with 40ly range?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2021 10:46 PM PST

My ship's laden jump range is 40ly, and I want to make it as high as I can on the orbital plane starting around Sol. Any system recommendations or advice?
