    Star lighting colour in Odyssey is an inconsistent mess

    So, Update 9 has been released which fixes atmospheric lighting, but only atmospheric lighting and only during sunset on atmospheric planets - star lighting colour is still borked everywhere else.

    Please contribute to the issue at https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/45769 to get this acknowledged and fixed by FDev.

    Paraphrasing my post at https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/broken-stellar-lighting.595270/post-9645887, star colour is applied very inconsistently.

    L-Class Brown Dwarf stars behave correctly:

    • (✔) Star colour is correctly applied close to the star.
    • (✔) Star colour intensity drops off as you move away, but the red/pink hue is correctly retained.
    • (✔) The red/pink hue is correctly applied in the system map.
    • (✔) Star colour is correctly applied to the planet details within the system map (albeit with less intensity).
    • (✔) And the star colour is correctly applied when you actually visit the planet.
    • (✔) And when you land on the planet, it all looks correct.

    However, B-Class stars are broken in parts:

    • (✔) Star colour is correctly applied close to the star.
    • (❌) Star colour is NOT applied at distance (100Ls).
    • (✔) Star colour is correctly applied in the System Map.
    • (✔) Star colour is correctly applied to the planet details within the system map (albeit with less intensity).
    • (❌) But the star colour is NEVER applied when you actually visit the planet.

    M-Class stars are even worse:

    • (✔) Star colour is correctly applied close to the star.
    • (❌) Star colour is NOT applied at distance (>20Ls).
    • (❌) Star colour is sometimes correctly applied in the System Map for some systems (seems to be dependent on planet type?).
    • (❌) Star colour is sometimes correctly applied to the planet details within the system map (albeit with less intensity).
    • (❌) The star colour is NEVER applied when you actually visit the planet.

    In summary - it's an inconsistent mess, and this is just with a sample of 3 star types. I don't have time to investigate all star types, and (frankly) I don't think I should have to.

    Without knowing the real reason for this issue, I would say it looks like it's an unfinished feature (they started it, but never completed it). FDev need to find out what's going on and fix it properly for all star types.

    So, for whoever that uses missiles, you've probably already noticed that there seems to be a slight change in this new update.

    First, what it used to be like to have missiles: You could use whatever other weapon or fire group and the missiles would lock on, ready for you to use them (as long as you were in range of lock, duh). Only thing that would reset it would be if you changed target/subtarget or the enemy got out of range.

    What it is now: Now, for whatever reason, you HAVE to lock on manually first and then they stay. If you lose the lock on, however you might, gotta do it manually again.

    Just want to say. If it's a bug, please fix it Frontier, seriously.
    If it's intentional. Just why? Seriously, why the fuck would you change something like that? And I'm not gonna excuse my language because it feels like such a key to using missiles, the fact that you can use other weapons first (say to get the shields off) and then have the missiles ready. You don't see gimballed/turret weapons pointing at whatever place and then turning towards the enemy, you have them ready.
    Whatever it is, bug or intentional, seriously Frontier, make the smart choice and bring the old missiles back.

    I hate to be that guy, but what is the Scorpion for?

    I know, it's been less than a day. After I found a Scorpion at a surface installation, I put it through its paces for a couple of hours. It's a really neat vehicle in concept and it sounds great rumbling around and blasting stuff. I know what it's supposed to be for, but so far it's pretty bad at its job.

    Pros:

    • It's the first new vehicle added to the game in 3 years. (THREE YEARS exasperated sigh)
    • Looks cool (I used my saved-up ARX to buy the shiny blue paint!)
    • Seats 2!
    • Heavier than the Scarab so not as drifty (this is actually a big one, it controls pretty well by comparison)
    • Seekers that can dumbfire (seriously why aren't all missiles like this?)
    • More HP than the Scarab

    Cons:

    • Slower than the Scarab (understandable)
    • Low boost tank (understandable)
    • Less cargo than the Scarab (understandable, also woo stealth buff for the Scarab!)
    • Can't hit the broad side of a barn (preposterous)
      • Seriously, the shots go nowhere near what you're aiming at, and the "gets more accurate as you fire" feels about as true as a political promise.
      • Imagine being a real-life mechanical engineer and thinking that it's OK for the mounted weapon you're designing to have a ~10-degree variance in how its first shot leaves the barrel.
    • "Gradual Spin Up" is a poor weapon mechanic.
      • It's not fun to wait for a gun to be effective while you waste ammo because it's missing the target (see above).
      • Guns don't work like this and to my knowledge never have. This is because why would someone actually designing a weapon think to themselves "You know what would be really effective? If this gun gradually fired faster over time!"
        • Even an actual Gatling Gun, like the OG, had a steady rate of fire based on crank speed.
    • Useless against ships (too weak)
    • Useless against turrets (too weak...or turrets too shielded? Who knows?)
    • Useless against humans (you can't hit them reliably with the turret...it's faster to run them over).
      • If you run them over it's not useless (technically this is a pro I guess)

    Update 9 seems to actually have noticeably better culling (finally) = noticeable performance bump (but still needs work!!)

    I'm a newish player and joined half for the space exploration and half for the community. I couldn't be happier with the space sim part of things but I've noticed that I don't really run into any other players ever, which made me pretty disappointed after I heard friends and content creators talking about the cool missions you could do in wings with other commanders and the camaraderie that comes along with.

    I'm currently based in the EZ Aquarii system so maybe that's what my problem is. I'm also pretty low-leveled in all the different aspects of play and have mostly been mining/taking combat missions from mission boards, but figured I'd post here and at the very least get to talk to some ED players on Reddit!

    Edit: It's worth noting that I only have Horizons and not Odyssey.

    Update 9. After flying about 5 minutes at 50-100m altitude and 100-200 meters per second (i.e. looking for biologicals) I consistently crash to desktop. Could anyone else do some checking to see if they can reproduce?

    Was watching my task manager memory graph slowly creeping up to about 12GB, then a small additional amount was all it took to crash to desktop again and again - plenty of RAM was available but maybe it hit an artificial soft limit set in the game. It always annoys me that more available memory is not used when available.

    Crash to desktop when trying to change utility mount

    Anyone else having this? Currently having it on my aspX trying to change out a shield booster.

    Complete CTD.

    It happened once with my vulture too. Seems it's happening all the time with my aspx.

    I'm filling out and sending the crash reports that popup when this happens. Is this sufficient?
