I know I'm still a noob but this is the single greatest ship I have ever owned. Especially in VR

    Goodbye Yolanda Ryan

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 02:44 PM PST

    o7 Commanders.

Tonight I lost my first crew member. After her daughter signed up to be military pilot Yolanda Ryan decided that instead of waiting to get old she would find her fortune amongst the stars. I took her on to pilot my Taipan fighter and provide protection to my Keelback amongst the rings of Deciat 7, where we spent day after day mining and dodging pirate attacks. More than once we claimed the bounties on those foolish enough to try and take what was rightfully ours, and after making millions together we planned to refit the mothership and take on a second crew member to try our hand at Bounty Hunting. Unfortunately before we could realise this dream Yolanda was killed in a skirmish near Garay Terminal. I thought I would meet her back on the ground, ready to fly by my side again, but it was not be.

And so I commit my companion to the void. Yolanda, you were a talented pilot, a dedicated worker and I'll see you again, out in the black.

tl;dr I didn't know that NPC crew members died permanently and I lost my first one tonight. Farewell!

Simple changes that would make me hate this game less.

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 02:09 PM PST

Contrary to the tone of my title, I love Elite Dangerous. It's a game that offers a unique blend of gameplay styles in a graphically stunning package that promises to deliver content and a wonderful simulation engine for years to come, with a great VR experience to boot for an extremely reasonable price and no game-changing microtransactions or other controversial aspects.

But Frontier, you have to give me a break. There are plenty of simple ways to improve the experience of players, and regardless of who hears them, I'd like to share them and hope similar sentiments can reach the developer's ears.

I know players are always clamoring about atmospheric planet landing, space legs, and other game features and additions that they find very important to the game. Those are not the things I'm talking about in this post. Every change I'm mentioning here simply amends existing flaws in how the game plays.

    Such changes include:

    1. Adding limpets that consume slightly more power and are heavier, but move faster. When I go bounty hunting and want to collect materials, I literally spend more time being stationary and doing nothing while I wait for a robot to pick up items. When I go to USSs to find materials, I deploy cargo scoop, hardpoints, and limpet as fast as possible, then do something else for a minute or two.
    2. Providing more context for randomly named POIs in systems. If I had a dollar for every time I jump into an instance with an interestingly named entity only to find it's science vessel #477, I'd probably have $477. This could also be done for previously discovered biological and geological sites, though this change might be more controversial. However, it sure gets old after the 40th geological site that's just another set of ice fumaroles.
    3. Adding support for bulk storage movement, module removal, or module purchase. I always buy powerplay modules in sets of 10 or so, and going through the animation of the weapon being added to each slot, removing it, and adding it to storage is a waste of time and not conducive to the realism or simulation of the game.
    4. Reworking powerplay and powerplay rewards. Waiting a full year as a minimum time requirement to get all of the power-specific modules is an insult to players and makes me wish I was playing a mobile game so I could pay past the time wall. Gathering cargo to improve powerplay rating is also an insult to player time management: to gather 500 units of cargo, instead of selecting that cargo and paying the purchase price, one must select 10 units, load it, purchase another quota, accept that message, and then select the units and load them again. Making the loading process take four times as long serves no one and does nothing and should be changed.
    5. Making Galnet more clear, important, and noticeable to new players. I've played for 600 hours and just read a Galnet article for the first time today because I couldn't find specific details for the community goal on this subreddit or the forums. Even after reading the article, I had to travel 200 LY just to find out the specific details for it. For being the only informational resource with regards to the weekly updates in game, it's pretty hidden and pretty underwhelming. I hate having to search twitter, frontier forums, reddit, and the frontier store just to find out what changed with a weekly community goal or seasonal promotion. It makes me not want to even start the game because it's a hassle. The Galnet blurbs in the main menu could also be made into clickable entries, because as they exist currently, you can't even read past the first sentence. I was left wondering how to read these articles when I first started playing.
    6. Making the cooperative space sim more rewarding for cooperative players. Multi-crew is a mess, and there aren't good rewards for using it. Rather than adding new gameplay elements or features to support it, I think simply adding credit, material, or cargo rewards for using multi-crew, tweaking damage for fighters piloted by players, and fixing its bugs would make Elite an easier and more fruitful time for those wanting to play as a crew.
    7. Shortening the engineering grind. Engineering started out like a casino simulator and has turned into a reasonable progression system, but it's terribly grindy for those who enjoy experimenting with new builds regularly like myself. It forces people like myself to limit ourselves to the exact same forms of gameplay that are optimal for high-grade materials, then fly to the 15-odd engineers we need for one build, dock said ship, and then repeat for every ship. For each ship, this can take 8 hours, not including gathering and trading materials, which you generally do in bulk. This ignores the fact that one has to take the 22,000 LY journey to Colonia to unlock a few engineers that are important for optimizing combat weight and exploration range, which is a multi-day journey in itself (though this type of time sink isn't a problem, as this is a part of exploration). Spending time isn't a problem, and neither is progression, but the scale needs to be tuned better, especially for such game-changing mechanics. This is likely the biggest thing deterring new players from being serious about the game.
    8. Integrating EDDB, EDSM, Inara, Coriolis, or the like into the discovery codex or starport services. Easy to do, simple to implement, and a great quality of life change for all players, new and old, having simple data tools that have already been made accessible in the game's engine makes the game more immersive with very minimal extra work required.
    9. Making all activities financially balanced. There's no reason in terms of game balance that you shouldn't be able to make the same amount of credits per hour mining as you can doing passenger missions, combat, recon, or otherwise. Making one activity the most efficient (cough cough painite) isn't bad, but making it the only viable option makes old players bored. Yes, new players should learn the value of credits and progress, but this could be done by basing mission value based on trade elite ranking or exploration elite ranking instead of individual station reputation rating (which could be changed to provide more diverse non-credit rewards rather than simply more rewards).
    10. Adding UI elements to change graphical aspects of the game you can already edit in the XML settings. Just add HUD color options. It's been years, and console isn't even allowed to do it, but PC has to fiddle with game files and change them every time the game updates. If you're going to make them paid, just do it. This is silly that this isn't an option in game. Not only this, but there are more graphical possibilities in 2019 with current hardware, and because graphical options are simply modifiers, more settings could easily be added to the game in literally an hour of work.
    11. Glitches. The community loves this game, and hopes for it's future to be bright and successful. Many people play this game like Sea of Thieves, as a game they come back to regularly to goof of with their friends and explore the ever changing world and endless variety its engine itself provides. Glitches are the only thing that can ruin this, and even simple decal bugs seem to be left in the game for months and months at a time. I hope the priority of glitch management in this game improves, or that its code is cleaned up at some point. The fate of the game depends on it.

There are surely other things I could find wrong with this game, but these are the things that I think would make the most impact on the game and its players. Please let me know what you think of these changes and share yours if you have more below.

[scratchinghead] I just tried out piracy and dropped in on a guy mining Painite but he wouldn't cough up

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 02:44 PM PST

I only wanted 4 units being as I was only in a Viper but he was stubborn and when I said I'd destroy his ship if he didn't cough up he preferred that. So I obliged. I wonder if he thought I couldn't do it since he was in a type 9 but I had about 480 pack hounds.

I would've left him alone if he'd just have forked out the loot.

edit: I have to say it was the most entertaining gameplay I've had in while. He tried to flee but I interdicted him a few times before he bit the bullet. And it was in an anarchy system so I didn't even need to pay a bounty.
