Frontier should add a "realistic space sound" option Posted: 23 Dec 2019 01:27 AM PST This would, if the player chooses to enable it, cause a drastic more realistic change to the entire sound of elite. In space, everything is actually quiet, sound is just the vibration of air particles but in space there is no air so in reality every explosion, laser, cannon etc. Is completely quiet and you can only hear internal stuff and when you get rammed etc. This would result in an amazing quite different, realistic and immersive experience that obviously puts you at a disadvantage but for exploring etc would be interesting. You'd only hear your engines from the inside of your ship whistling in the background etc. If this wasnt difficult to add Id love to see how it feels. Obviously though any other update to the game like space legs, atmo landings and hangar ships should have priority but yeah... [link] [comments]

Ship Launched Miner concept and loadouts Posted: 23 Dec 2019 09:48 AM PST Ship launched miners would be an excellent way to add more multicrew functionality to mining and expand the usefulness of both fighter bays and crew seats. I have a few concepts for a ship launched fighter frame, and two useful loadouts. Vessel name: U38 Badger, U for utility. Manufacturer: Vodel, a subsidiary of Core Dynamics, responsible for the Scarab. Aesthetic: Similar to that of the mining tools, industrial yellow-orange and with more focus on structure and scaffolding than sleek armor. A cockpit shape closer to the bubble of an asp explorer than the cramped cockpit of a Condor. Flight characteristics: Slower than any of the other fighters, but only slightly less maneuverable, to make picking up resource chunks easy. Much less armor that any of the other SLFs, but slightly beefier shields to protect against impacts. All Badger loadouts also come equipped with a cargo scoop and a three-bin refinery, with no cargo rack. A special kind of permanent limpet called a "Cargo Courier Limpet" will be responsible for delivering refined resources to the mother ship. The limpet is indestructible and can only transfer canisters of refined ore directly from the SLM to the ship and cannot passively gather resources like a collection limpet. The courier limpet also has a short range, requiring the SLM to be within a few dozen meters of the mothership. Essentially a simple way to transfer cargo without requiring the precise alignment of an SRV's cargo transfer system. Loadout one: Scout Utility mount: 0D Pulse Wave Analyzer Hardpoints: 1D Abrasion Blaster, and a Beacon Dart Launcher, an exclusive module. A complement to core seeking ships, the Scout loadout allows the quick fighter to seek, detect, and mark core-containing asteroids. The Beacon Dart works similarly to a prospection limpet but can ONLY detect whether or not a core is present, not what it may contain or the location and strength of fissures. If the asteroid contains a core, it creates a contact for the mothership to be able to lock on to and be able to find the tagged asteroid for prospection. The abrasion blaster allows the SLM to assist with breaking off the harder-to-reach surface deposits after the core has been cracked, and the cargo scoop and nimble flight allows for more efficient gathering of resources. Loadout two: Wanderer Utility mount: 0F External Ore Bin Extension, an exclusive module that increases the SLM's refinery bin count to five. Hardpoints: 1D Mining Laser, 1D Abrasion Blaster A more independent complement to a more general-purpose mining setup, this loadout is designed to operate farther than average from the mothership, and to frequently return to offload gathered ore. The SLM lacks prospectors, however, so will likely be dumping their refinery of things like liquid oxygen or hydrogen peroxide fairly frequently. Could also work as a way to allow combat focused ships with two-fighter bays to gather raw engineering materials without sacrificing a hardpoint to a mining laser. [link] [comments]
