The nicest CMDR in the galaxy

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 09:46 AM PST

Yesterday as I was autodocking in my 7000+ MJ Cutter a little Viper bumped into me on the way out, and the CMDR immediately apologized over chat. We had a friendly convo after. So, shoutout to the galaxy's nicest CMDR: the guy who apologizes in a friendly way after taking maybe 0.1% of my shields down and almost ate a rebuy himself : ) Happy journeys!

    Improving NPC Crew Members

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 01:50 PM PST

NPC Crew members, as they currently are implemented, are extremely lackluster and have very small impact on the game. Their only use is to help in combat using an SLF (Or flying your ship while you use the SLF), and even then, you can only use 1 crew at a time out of 3 you can have employed.

This leads to them basically being forgotten and barely noticed, while still taking a cut of your profits unless you fire them. So how can we improve them?

For one, let us take two crew for ships that can launch two SLFs. Pretty basic idea, you've got the crew, you've got the ships, why not?

Second solution, crew missions. Give the option in the Crew Lounge to send inactive crew on missions. This could be hunting a pirate, delivering cargo, running couriers, taxi passengers, mining, etc. Make it a risk/reward mission on a timer, so it happens while you go off and do your thing. Next time you dock, if it's done, you can collect your rewards. An example:

    • Mission: Hunt Known Pirate (Deadly) [Mission type and difficulty]
    • Crew: John Smith (Expert) [Selected Crew and their rank]
    • Duration: 30 Minutes [Varies based on difficulty and mission type]
    • Investment: 170,000 Credits [Paid Immediately, 10% of payout + Crew Share]
    • Payout: 1,000,000 Credits, 5 Selenium [Payout varies based on difficulty and task]
    • Chance of Success: 72% [Pilot skill vs time + difficulty]

Paying up front with a chance of failure adds risk, but potential rewards can make it worth while. It could just be a large sum of credits, or maybe a mixture of credits and commodities or engineering materials.

This is a pretty easy to implement system that has been done in many games before. Assassin's Creed has done something like this since Brotherhood, World of Warcraft added it in Warlords of Draenor, Pathfinder: Kingmaker has it's own version of it using council members. It's a well known and easy to use way to make your NPC's matter a bit more, while also giving more room for players to create their own narrative (Like running a small mining operation).

I'd love to hear some opinions on these ideas, as well as other suggestions on what could improve the NPC Crews role in the game.
