    Oh god no

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 09:12 AM PST

I did a system scan and found something I'd never seen before: Ceremonial Comms. Intrigued, I set off to investigate immediately and at top speed. You should know that I'm an appalling pilot – there is barely a station that I've visited that I haven't scraped or bumped (or much, much worse but let's not get into that now).

Anyway you know when you drop out of FSD you kinda coast at a couple hundred kmph? And if you drop out a wee bit late you sometimes end up uncomfortably close to your destination crashing into stuff? Usually no problem - I merrily smash through emissions canisters all the time.

Thing is, it turns out this ceremonial signal was a funeral. I arrived at my usual speed, saw a bunch of large ships, panicked and somehow pressed boost by mistake.

It's just – I mean I know it's only NPCs, but still. There they are, sailing sombrely along, transmitting beautiful messages about their loved ones' souls going into the stars or whatever, and next thing they know a moron in a wildly out of control Cobra crashes out of FSD and slams into one of the funeral ships while screaming 'oh god no I'm so sorry omg'.

I skedaddled away as fast as possible, because really what can you say after you've literally crashed a funeral? But the shame will never leave me

Today i found out you can black out from G-forces

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 12:11 PM PST

Well preety much what the title says. I've got over 700 hours in this game and just today i found out that you can temporarily loose control of your ship if the G-forces are high enough. This happened just after i was done extensively engineering the engines on my courier and decided to spam boost + pitch up just outside jameson memorial. First my commander's vision got slightly darker. And the next time i pressed the boost button while holding pitch up i completely lost control over my ship for like 2 seconds. I am amazed

Steam Controller Elite detailed configuration! A tribute to years of the best controller I've ever used

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 07:57 AM PST

I've been using the steam controller for 4 years in this game and have programmed these configs for practically any play style. I'm moving to a hotas soon (recently got VR and holy ship!) and with the recent spike in steam controller users I am posting my configs to share. I have worked out the efficient use for every action in this game and have troubleshooted any bug I came across. I'm someone that likes having full control of my ship with a controller and does not want to feel gimped. Feel free to use if you don't want to spend time configuring! This works with all functions of the game (including SRV, wings, multicrew and the debug camera) using analogue maneuvering and driving where possible and requires no action sets for seamless gameplay.

    Updated: 2019.12.04

You will need to download the game file and apply the steam configuration.

    Download Elite file here

    Elite settings location:

    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings\

Updated steam community config for Angular Flight Standard Pro (paste in windows explorer):

    steam://controllerconfig/359320/1928192545

    Some notes about the config:

    • All 6DoF are accessible here. Stick is pitch/roll, right touch pad is vertical/lateral movements, triggers throttle, and grips yaw. Additionally, full presses of the throttle triggers will 50% forwards or backwards throttle respectively (great for fast turn radius), or zero throttle with both triggers. When landing, remember to zero your throttle as the the game doesn't reset this automatically. Boost shortcut on [A+RT] or double soft tap RT. Both grips together is flight assist on/off.

    • GYRO aiming and free looking! Only touching the pad will enable mouse aiming for finer shots and resets only when you take your finger off the pad. I find this useful for interdictions, combat and cargo scooping. Pushing in the right touch pad enables looking around and resets when released, which is useful for targeting ships off center with LS click.

    • Face buttons are modifiers with the Dpad, grips, back button and clicking the stick for all functions. Most functions only requires 2 buttons. A is for maneuvers and deployables, B is for ship functions, X is for weapons and utilities, Y is for targeting. Generally the grips are used for easy access while flying and the dpad for the others. The context menu (the one that shows you what the buttons do when held) is disabled only because it messes with the ability to copy paste into the chat (A+LS Click). If you do not use copypasta then enable it to learn the controls a bit more easily (under miscellaneous in-game settings).

    • Button combos

__ Left Grip Right Grip Up Down Left Right Left Stick back
A Super Cruise* Hyper Jump* ECM Heatsink Shield Cell Chaff Paste Silent Running
B Cargo Scoop Landing Gear Comms Panel Role Panel External Panel Internal Panel Mute* Fighter Orders
X Previous Weapons Next Weapons Ship Mode Retract Hardpoints Ship Lights Night Vision* Ship Lights FSS Mode
Y Previous Subsystem Next Target Next Star in Route Highest Threat* Previous Target Next Subsystem Wing Target Wing Nav Lock
Back Camera Camera Zoom Sensors Unzoom Sensors System Map Galactic Map Orbital Lines __
Right Pad __ __ Wing Target Wing 2 Wing 1 Wing 3 Target Wing Nav Lock
    • Details and useful extra shortcuts: Targeting with LS click, firing with bumpers, and panel tabs with bumpers or grips, system resources with Dpad. Double tap RT or [A+RT] for boost. [B+RT] for cargo scoop speed. Flight assist on/off [Both Grips]. Double tap X for night vision. Double tap Y for highest treat. Double tap B for radio. Exit FSD with [A+Grips] or [Right Pad Click+Grips] useful for keeping aim while existing FSD, like squeezing the controller. [A+LS] for pasting into the star search or chat comms, where Back will change recipient. Double tap LS for voice mute toggle. [A+B+X+Y] for VR HDM reset. Jettison all cargo [A+B+Back]. [A+LT+RT] for rotational correction. SRV drive assist with [LT+RT].

Side note: For the SRV turret and multicrew gunner, the right pad is still a basic analogue stick to avoid dealing with actionsets, but the gyro aiming is my intended use. If you do not like gyro aiming, this config will probably not be for you or you are free to use action sets! Elite has too many functions and axes to not take advantage of its features.

Have fun and enjoy! Feel free to let me know any improvements to the config.

Just broke my Colonia 'cherry' for the first time. A leisurely 25hrs exploring a bit on the way. Is it normal to start singing and generally gibbering during the journey???

[Opinion] How unbelievably awesome would it be to have the ability to hail other player ships?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 06:32 AM PST

Imagine being able to send a hail request to their bridge and your cockpit narrator is like "You are being hailed" and you can accept or decline would be pretty awesome and would add to player interactions a lot IMO. I'm sure they've considered this, they'd probably have to make it an option you can turn on/off in the settings as some people may spam requests. Just a thought though. o7

Edit: Wasn't clear in original post, I'm talking about the ability to initiate voice comms directly without joining a wing etc, should have pointed that out.

Final edit: This is just hilarious, over a thousand hours in this game and I somehow have missed the fact that this feature literally exists as duly pointed out by /u/Xjph. Thank you cmdr! o7
