Give a Commander a Fish, Feed them for a Day. Teach them to Fish? Thanks CMDR Alduin_First

So, I've been with ED since about 2014. I've had a few false starts, playing for 20+ hours or so, and quitting, and then coming back. Not once, has ED really clicked for me. Except this time, this time it did and that is thanks to a single commander who I met in a live stream chat about two weeks back.

Alduin saw I was still having issues connecting to ED and we got to talking and the next thing I know he's offering to join me in a private group. I suppose he saw it as gift, but to me, it was an investment. The next thing I know, he's offering to give me 48 million credits worth of LTD's he mined and then, I'm sitting on more money than I've ever made in ED.

Now, two weeks later and closing on 300 hours of gameplay, I've made Baron and unlocked the Cutter, I'm two steps away from Elite Trade rank, and I'm sitting on a total of 204 million credits as I work towards actually buying my first Cutter.

I don't know how to thank you Commander, but your gift and help was paid forward and I've brought another friend in to Elite and used what you gave me, to help build them up. Said friend is on their way to their first Anaconda.

So, in short, thanks for everything. You didn't just give me money. You gave me an investment and I hope it paid off dividends.

    Fly Dangerously Commanders.

Q4 2020 Next Era update, Space Legs, and a divide in the community

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 02:02 AM PST

Let me start by saying I intend for this post create a meaningful, civil discussion about the future state of the game (The Next Era), and for it to clear up some 'misconceptions' held within the community.

    The Next Era

On August 31st, 2018, Zac Antonaci (Head of Communications) stated that FDev's team had gone "from pre-production into full production" on the next major update of ED. In the same forum post, Antonaci responded to a user: "Thanks Wolvie, I hope you enjoy the *next leg** of the journey.*" A later official forums post said, "We believe this will be a defining moment in the history of the game and it will be our biggest update yet." Reportedly, there around around 100 dedicated developers working on this update. It's planned to drop in Q4 of 2020, nearly 2.5 years since it went into full production. That's longer than it took to develop the original base game.

On 15 November 2019, Frontier described the new era of Elite in a Trading Statement and Roadmap Update: "The future for Elite Dangerous is also exciting. Frontier is developing a major new paid-for release for the iconic space simulation *which will dramatically expand gameplay** and mark the beginning of a new era for Elite Dangerous. This will be characterised by significant new features to appeal to existing commanders, whilst being specifically designed to be a compelling, attractive and welcoming entry point for new players. Targeted for launch at the end of 2020...*"

In April of 2019, a 4chan (later Reddit) post was made supposedly leaking a 5 Year Roadmap for Frontier Developments. The leak contained the road plans for many of Frontier's titles, including Elite Dangerous.

    The exact excerpt regarding ED:

Elite Dangerous (Project Watson) - Space legs. Haven't seen any mention of atmospheric landings. FPS style gameplay, Thargoids in the flesh. Base building. Coming end of 2020. Thargoids look very Starship Trooper. Don't expect to see much between now and then. The focus is on keeping Elite making money on the mean time.

Now what does this all mean? For all we know this could be a troll attempt. But it's not. As of the beginning of this year, all Frontier Roadmap Leaks from 2019 have been confirmed, (including PlanetZoo, a previously unannounced game). This makes the Elite Dangerous related leaks much more credible.

To add more official credibility, in September 2019, people found references to player buildings in Frontiers ARXs website, within the meta tag data:

Arx is the Elite Dangerous in-game currency used to buy customisations for your commander, ships, SRVs, fighters, weapons, and buildings.

Frontier soon after removed the reference to buildings and interestingly enough, weapons (a likely reference to FPS style game play). In the words of ObsidianAnt, "It seems obvious at this point that Frontier are almost certainly developing player owned buildings. This would also go a long way to implying that they're also developing space legs, simply because owning buildings without having the ability to walk around on them would be a pretty pointless."

This is no longer speculation or rumors. The meta tag data practically confirms the leaks. It's the closest you could get to an official statement.

    Divide in the Community:

In the most respectful way possible, there is a section of the community that absolutely detests the idea of Space legs. They seem hostile to the idea and any post regarding space legs has always been met with what I would call a negative downplaying response. That's their opinion, ok. However, the same group of players spread this false narrative and 'misinformation' during these discussions:

Elite Dangerous is spaceship flight simulator. Space legs make no sense.

FDev's engine can't support Space legs.

This game was not designed for Space legs. Everything will have to be redesigned from scratch.

If you want Space legs go play Star Citizen or No Man's Sky.

    etc.

All these points are simply wrong. Space legs have always been a planned feature of Elite Dangerous.

Space legs have been on the roadmap since 2014, "Walking around interiors and combative boarding of other ships. Combat and other interactions with other players and AIs in the internal areas of star ports."

It's always been a core vision of David Braben that the player is a person in a real futuristic setting, not just a ship. In the Elite Dangerous Development Plan video (December 14, 2012), Braben talks about walking on planets, in ships, other people's ships, stations, vehicles and being a big game hunter with animals.

In that same video Braben says, "You've seen that we're designing all the ships with the interiors in mind, how the cargo is unloaded, all of that sort of thing, how damage occurs. And that's because that another thing that we are doing, again down the line, is that you will be able to walk around inside your ship. You'll be able to get out of your ship, walk around inside space stations, other vehicles, all of that sort of thing."

This amazing Youtube channel has done great VR tours of most if not all ED ships, showing the fine detail put into the design of every ship.

News letter #32: "We also plan to allow you to get up out of your seat and walk around your ship. You can see the level of attention and thought that has already been given to the ship interiors."

On January 27, 2018 Sandro Sammarco said "The team and I all see Space Legs as the feature we will love to add and are at the top of our specification, but it's something that will not happen in the Beyond season. We will talk more about it later."

Frontier has also mentioned various forms of 'base building' in the past. Imagine setting up a mining outpost on some distant moon.

Many more references, but I think I've proven my point.

The engine and in-game structures have been designed in anticipation of Elite feet. Elite Dangerous is more than a spaceflight simulator. I will not go play SC or NMS as a substitution. The implementation of Space Legs will be the addition of a long awaited core feature of the game. I look forward to the Q4 2020 update.

Edit: Thanks for gold kind CMDR! o7
