The Ultimate Guide to Guides Guiding You Through the Galaxy

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 12:06 PM PDT

    Background

Like many of you I have found myself with a lot of time to play games that I haven't played in ages, due to a shelter-in-place suggestion from our governments. So I decided this would be the time I finally sit down and "do the engineer grind." And in doing so I went through all the guides out there, several of which will be linked below.

This guide is not meant to be a guide! It is a guide to the guides!

A lot of CMDR's have put in way more time and effort than I have in putting these together. I am especially grateful to whoever Fox is, /u/El_Burninator, /u/Exigeous, and Forum Users Dizzy Be High and Feuermagier, whose work was both monu- and instrumental in my own grind. As my way of giving a little back, I'm gathering these guides into one place, as well as updating some things I found to be changed or more efficient.

Since I don't have anyone's permission and we have character limits, I will not be reproducing these guides, merely linking and then giving notes for each step that needs it.

This is an especially heinous grind, and this is coming from an old school WoW Black Temple raiding tank. There are parts of this grind that make me prefer tanking Illidan fires, and that green shit made my eyeballs bleed. Any game mechanic where the best solution is to literally turn the game off and back on is in real need of a rework. But it is what it is, and what it is is below.

    Prepare Yourself

I came in to this sitting on 2 billion credits and a terrible Anaconda that I made in the initial Void Opal craze months ago. During this engineering grind I quickly tired of the Anaconda's lumbering speed and Jupiter sized turn radius, and jumped back into smaller ships, very similar to these below.

    DBX (Unengineered, ~36ly jump)

    15 million from these stations.

This is specifically set up for guardian unlock. Point Defences on top, beam laser for fighter unlock. You can gain half a light year on the jump range by leaving off the beam laser until the second phase, and eek out a little extra by downrating your planetary hangar, but it is nice to be able to make mistakes on some of these long journeys even if you never make one. Besides your first step is improving jump range which by itself will bump it up to 57ly, more than enough for this guide.

    Python (Slight Engineering, ~34ly jump)

    86 million from these stations.

Sir, this is a mining ship...

It is indeed, and you could lose the mining stuff. But this makes a great HGE workhorse, can make cash, and has the cargo capacity for the hauling missions. Build this after unlocking the first few engineers. The empty slot is where your Guardian FSD can go one day, but for now put whatever you like there. For a less expensive option, check out Exigeous's Krait Phantom Build at ~65 million. It also has a bit more range and speed, but at a higher cost in mats. You will also need a mining ship at some point in the unlock process, which the Krait won't accomplish.

    Other requirements

I'd say you want at least 20 million in free cash, so ships included ~125 million in total cash to start. (250 if you include the later PvE ship for combat bonds, but that is near the end of Phase One) Significant amounts of materials is an understatement.

For material grinding check out this fantastic video from CMDR Exigeous.

    1) For your initial material grind I recommend Dav's Hope (as seen in the first guide) over Crystal Shard farming, simply because it is so much closer and you don't need many 5G mats and fewer materials just for unlocking the engineers. You also don't have the high jump range to make that trip much fun. I do recommend Jameson's crash site from Exigeous's video over the Crashed Anaconda, because it is more efficient with relogging.

So in essence, do Jameson runs from the first part of the above video, then run Dav's hope, and skip HGE's for now.

You still want to spend some good time at Dav's Hope, an hour or two should give you enough to G5 your FSD and still have enough to unlock your remaining engineers. Use inara.cz for material trading and recipe tracking. At some point during the engineering unlock those mats will run out, at that point I recommend taking a break between steps to run your first shard farm. You will be ready for one, and your jump range will make the trip much more bearable.

    2) When you start crystal shard farming, you actually only need to visit two systems. Outotz LS-K d8-3 has both Antimony (Planet B5C, Site 1) and Yttrium (B5A, site 1 or 2), so you don't have to visit Outotz HD-J d9-3. (Thanks to youtube commenter Luis Bonito for that time saver!) Also, I elected not to self destruct the only time I've been there so far for that exploration data, but I certainly will if I ever farm it again.

    You thought we had started?

    PHASE ONE, Engineer Unlocking

For this we are referring to this old post by El_Burninator. Unless the step requires moving large amounts of commodities, always use the DBX.

I had unlocked a few engineers before seeing what the grind was and giving up, so I actually came into this guide at step three. It was very accurate and helpful, only a few notes here.

    Step One

I can't stress enough how much you want to be sure to max out your FSD (Increased Range G5, Mass manager)

    Step Three

If this is your first long trip, I recommend the Jellyfish Nebula. The range is perfect, and it will be the first time you get to get up close and personal with a nebula. Remember it has to be 5kly from your home system which will be either LHS 3447, Dromi, or Aesullus Prime. When you get to your final destination check the distance, and if it isn't 5kly just jump out a little further.

    Step Four

You may find after your long journey that you still don't have the rep required for Professor Palin. If that's the case, just do a couple of missions for rep, don't go on another long trip. Also, I gather Professor Palin used to be in Maia, but he has relocated to Abel Laboratory in the Arque system.

    Step Seven

Use your favorite combat ship, the PvE FDL linked below, or just throw some gimballed multi-cannons on the Python. Feel free to switch back to the DBX for travel, but throw one multicannon on a hardpoint to level to the engineering, then get rid of it.

    Step Eight

Aren't you glad I recommended that multipurpose mining workhorse? Be sure you mine the painite and bromelite in one sitting. If you leave the instance or game for any reason and come back, you will have to contend with pirates and now your holds are bootilicious.

    Steps Ten, Eleven, Twelve

These commodities are no longer limited, you should be able to scoop up the entire batch in one trip for each except the landmines, which will take two trips. Remember for step eleven you will need a missile rack equipped to level her up, and then get rid of it.

    Step Thirteen

At this step you may want to consider outfitting a dedicated PvE ship like an FDL or a Mamba. Here's that FDL I kitted out to not take a bunch of engineering mats. Spring for Dirty Drives if you can. Bi-Weave shields for PvE, but the primary concern here is to engineer your weapons. Switching to this ship cut this time by at least half, and I'm no ship outfitter. I can't stress the difference in unengineered weapons enough, even though these are only G4 to save mats. It is worth it even if you only use it for this step.

    Step Fourteen

This commodity was also not limited to 5, but I still had to make three trips as they only had 23 units per visit.

Are you still alive? Still sane? Are you sober? Do you need to talk? It's okay I understand. But be proud of yourself that is the bulk of your hard work! (just kidding, still have HGE farming to do, but don't worry we will skip that for now)

    PHASE TWO, Guardian Boogaloo!

For this guide to the guide's subguide we will be referencing two posts from the Frontier Forums, the first on unlocking Guardian Fighters. The second will focus on your Guardian Weapons & Modules.

My recommended method of unlocking (and not the way I did it of course) would be Fighter BPs, Weapon BPs, and end on Module BPs. The reason for this is the Module BP planet is the best to farm mats (I checked several of the recommendations in the comments, but none of them seemed better). So if you decide you don't want fighters, skip that and hit weapons and then modules. Likewise if you just want the FSD head straight to that part.

    Unlocking Guardian Fighters

Straightforward guide, not much to add here. This is why you had a beam laser on your ship that whole time. Hope you didn't remove it and forget to put it back on there like I did...but if you did, Synuefe EN-H d11-96 (110 ly away) sells them, you don't have to go all the way home.

Important to note you do not need to log between attempts, you can just do all three one after another.

The picture used for the Guardian Site beacon locations is a little unclear, so here is one I've marked with the locations. And here is a top view of the site. They will not rise until you drive over the X, so do that first.

    Unlocking Weapons BP

Don't worry about any obelisks or panels, but you do want to gather the sentinel parts. Most people will only need two fragments here for the gauss cannons. You do seem to need to relog between attempts. Get in your ship and fly straight up 200m, menu-log and come back, land at your same spot. Rinse and repeat.

    Unlocking Modules

Landing spot. Focus on your fragments first. Most people will need at least four (FSD boost, Shield, Hull, Module Reinforcement). Same menu-log method as above.

    Farming Mats & Patterns

Once you finish getting all your fragments, this is where you will farm your Guardian Tech Components. Here is my route that avoids most sentinel spawns, menu log and repeat. Use Inara.cz to make your lists. It is about 6 minutes per lap including restart, and gets the majority of the destructibles on the map.

On the same planet (SYNUEFE NL-N C23-4 Planet B3) you will also see Ancient Ruins. Site 2 is the place to go, and there are two ways to farm them. Either way land here. You can do the outside loop and then inside loop, and relog once you get back to your ship...but there is also a cheese way.

On one of these plateaus you will find three obelisks very close to one another, you barely have to move to get them all. Scan all three, menu-log from your SRV and log back in. This is by far the most efficient method I found.

Use eddb.io to find the final commodities, and pick them up in your Python before heading to a tech broker to unlock everything.

    And that's it! Pretty much!

Now what? Well most likely you will now be farming HGE's to engineer your fleet, as those should be the only remaining materials. Have fun with that, I got so frustrated after checking six "Civil Unrest" sytems and an hour of a half with no HGE spawns that I actually decided it would be more fun to make this guide...and I was right.

From here, you have now opened every gameplay option. Grind out Imperial or Federation ranks for new ships, follow the Anti-Xeno initiative guide and build out an AX ship to kill Thargoids, build a fully engineered 70ly exploration ship and point into the black or even get that Fer-De-Lance competitive in PvP.

I appreciate your time in reading this almost as much as I have appreciated the diversion from HGE misery. A big thanks to all of the above mentioned creators and communities that help make this game better than it is. Stay safe commanders!
