ANNOUNCEMENT: New web-based tool for discovering high-sell stations

    Wild Goose Chase

    Greetings CMDRs,

Over the past couple of months we have been developing and testing a new web-based tool to coordinate the scouting of stations offering high prices for mined minerals (LTD, Void Opals, Painite).

We are pleased to announce that the Wild Goose Chase site is now out of beta and ready to be used by all who wish to participate.

This follows on from the excellent work of /u/psychicEgg who started this initiative, developing an Excel spreadsheet to filter the 20,600 populated systems into a smaller set of candidate systems that are most likely to offer high purchase prices for LTDs. You can read his previous post here: LTD Systems Analysis (tool to hunt down new stations offering high LTD prices).

If you regularly check sites such as EDDB and Inara for market prices, you may already be aware how these prices appear on the databases: Commanders running connector applications such as EDMC upload real-time data about the systems and stations they visit to the EDDN (Elite: Dangerous Data Network), which in turn passes the data to the public databases.

This year we've been learning that the highest prices of the day (such as 1.6m LTD/Void Opal prices and 900k Painite prices) are rarely found by chance. Many have been discovered by a small team specifically hunting down these systems.

Previously, this scouting process was limited to those who had access to Excel to use the spreadsheet. Now, anyone can help to find these systems using the online Wild Goose Chase app. And unlike the spreadsheet, the WGC app is updated in real-time, so as you visit each system you'll see the results appear on the scouting web page.

The only requirement is that you run a connector app, such as EDMC or EDDiscovery. Console users can also participate using the Journal monitoring function of EDSM. Instructions for all of this can be found on our Scouting intro page.

If you would like to chat with Commanders involved in this initiative, you are welcome to join our Discord, where we discuss a lot of different topics about the BGS and commodity prices.

Finally, huge thanks to the Commanders involved in this project for the many hours spent testing this tool and providing invaluable feedback, and to all of those Commanders involved in the scouting initiative: /u/psychicEgg (CMDR GeorjCostanza), /u/Shion_S (CMDR ShionS), /u/Johny_D_Doe (CMDR Sad Samurai), /u/xiba2k4 (CMDR xiba2k4), /u/CMDR_Dogsbody_D (CMDR Dogsbody D), /u/GraphiteGB2 (CMDR GraphiteGB).

    Happy scouting!

Anyone seen this before? Carrier won't jump. Full fuel, target in range, timer goes down then nothing. Timers go to down to 0:00:00 then just stay there, can't open galaxy map. "Departure aborted, unknown failure!"

I decided to visit the Black Treasure for my first 5k ly trip.

Day 4 of my first expedition - I am about 2Kly out and finally hitting entire undiscovered star systems. Feeling a little giddy every time I see an empty system map.

Am I alone in logging way less since the removal of Galnet and Community Goals?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 06:41 AM PDT

I used to check in at least once a week, do a few missions while having Galnet read to me. Visited some of the locations mentioned in the articles. Picked up Community Goals, and their timers made me come back whenever my session had to end.

Nowadays I maybe log in once a month, if that.

The Universal Protection initiative: a system to provide protection to CMDRs in need against gankers. Contributors of all kinds welcome.

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 02:27 AM PDT

"Space a dangerous place" is a falsehood. 99.99% of the galaxy alone is made of neutral star systems, only waiting to be visited, without danger lurking. The remaining 0.01%, however, is Human Space. And Human Space can be a very dangerous place.

Greetings, CMDRs. I am CMDR Sari Sari, explorer and trader, and I am looking to start an initiative to protect the defenseless against the murderers and vandalists that roam some of the most visited systems by pilots: The Universal Protection initiative.

Universal Protection (UP) would regroup capable fighter pilots, with which CMDRs in need of their services can be matched up immediately or in advance with scheduling. The CMDR requesting protection would then be accompanied for as long as their mission requires, until they are back into relatively safe space. The role of UP pilots would then be to fight off, or scare off, the vandalists and murderers that threaten the protected CMDR. There will never be a price to pay for pilots requesting service from UP, however, the pilots providing service to UP will eventually receive payment from crowdfunding.

As a brand new initiative, I am looking for sufficiently competent combat pilots to simply start this initiative, with the intent of eventually having a combat officer for UP. As the project gains traction, it will grow to include better organisation for UP pilots, a system of vouchers and crowdfunding for remuneration, information campaigns targeting the newer pilots of the galaxy against its dangers, leaderboards, easier ways to match up UP pilots with CMDRs that need protection, and more.

Q: Wait. Why would I want an escort to go through dangerous systems, when I can just log in solo play?

A: Because it would provide a more authentic and fun experience, and the service would be free of charge for you to use. ED is an immersive game with a lot of potential for these kind of things. If that's not what you're into, that's fine.

Q: So, I'm up for escorting people and all that, but you expect me to do that for free?

A: For now, yes. At least, there can't be a guarantee of payment right now. You must be willing to join out of interest for the project, but eventually, there will be a system in place to regularly grant payment to the CMDRs providing their services to UP.

Q: I'm not a very good fighter, but I really want to contribute to your project. Can I do that in any way?

A: As a matter of fact, many times yes. Pilots providing protection to CMDRs in need will be just one aspect of UP, eventually, we are going to need volunteer miners to fund these valiant pilots. Additionally, there is going to be a lot of administrative and organisation work to get done. Anyone willing to contribute to this project is welcome.

Unarmed shuttle as a new type of ship-launched fighter?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 11:34 AM PDT

I wonder how many people would use this in lieu of collector limpets if given an option. Two ton cargo capacity, equipped with a cargo hatch (capable of gathering engineering materials), equipped with a data link scanner (capable of carrying out recon missions or zipping around the data points on a generation ship but incapable of defending itself if detected), capable of requesting permission and landing at an outpost without large landing pads (low priority access, but capable of transferring small amounts of cargo). It wouldn't be OP for mining since you'd be hooking back to dock and offload frequently, but it would be an option if there's that one void opal your limpets just keep killing themselves trying to reach.

    Thoughts?
