    Notes incoming...

    • Any questions that aren't answered tonight they'll try to answer them in a post tomorrow
    • Dr Kay Ross: I've been working at Frontier on Elite Dangerous for 8 years, I do a lot of the codey codeys, co-lead of the render programming team. We have a special render team on the Elite Dangerous project, not only is this looking after rendering, shaders, nice effects, but also with my physics background we look after parts of Stellar Forge, i.e. the in-game galaxy.
    • How's that journey been from Elite Dangerous' day-one concept to now? Originally it was a kickstarter for a rebirth of Elite, with now it's can we keep pushing it, can we keep adding to it, and we can! To see how far the game has come, and what's coming.
    • Also on Render Team are (name typos likely!): Arkus Lokakus, Tom Wiggans, Lucy Bugby, Matt Roe, Mark Vince, Hazel Quantock
    • I wasn't always a game programmer, started out as a researcher in particle physics, undergrad masters in astrophysics and cosmology before the swap to particle physics. I did some work at Fermi lab in USA, like what CERN is. Looking into the differences in Matter and Anti-Matter. But then the Kickstarter for Elite Dangerous began and I tried my luck, and they took me on, working on a system to generate the Milky Way.
    • Stellar Forge is the framework where they input the raw data of mass distribution, age regions of sectors, equations of stellar lifetimes, discs, etc, which then procedurally and deterministically generates the star systems that then becomes our Milky Way galaxy
    • The best way to generate the galaxy is start big, then get smaller and smaller.
    • Within a sector define how many of the largest bodies there are, then through 8 layers of concentric cubes generate down the different stellar bodies, orbits, planet classifications, each of which are child objects of the parent cubes
    • With the 1:1 galaxy representation can you change one "simple" thing? It's like the butterfly effect, one small change will affect many surrounding areas.
    • Referencing the Hairy Ball Theorem, things can be sensitive to input data - tiny spikes on planetary surfaces can happen
    • Planets begin not as spheres but as cubes, everything gets spherisised (?), and offsets are applied
    • For Odyssey the method and offsets are changed.
    • Lots of data inputs: depth, magma, crust, core; tidally locked; ice caps.
    • Generate formations, terrain POIs, flats,
    • 30km-60km-120km sections of terrain resources used in sampling the surfaces, blending in the right direction, giving wide variance
    • Images from Dev Diaries being shown as examples of planet surfaces
    • How accurate are the planets, as hand-crafting isn't feasible? Detail all the way down from 120km to 1km to eye level.
    • As good as Horizons was, it did its job and was very enjoyable to see and play.
    • But with Odyssey and whatever comes next, wanted to get a new system in place that was robust and expandable enough, with cascading detail
    • This new tech goes into all landable planets, ones from before (Horizons) and new ones (Odyssey). Larger variety.
    • The change is night and day. While existing screenshots are incredible, they cannot wait to see the new Odyssey screenshots that will come. It looks like a new game.
    • You cannot see snapshots as they happen in development, as you see the gradual changes; how do you feel about the improvements? There are a wide range of emotions. We dont see big changes happen in one go, all gradual. I do spend a lot of time looking at the lovely screenshots on Reddit, Twitter, and gaming footage on players' streams.
    • Are the changes coming more considerable than with Horizons? Same but different. The second half is lighting changes coming with Odyssey.
    • Quantifying the change? Horizons was a vast undertaking because full-scale planets are hard. When it comes to Odyssey we have the framework there, the handling of resources, stream in stream out, how they're combined, it's a large undertaking - it hasn't been a weekend or two. We saw it as a great opportunity to see what the different teams could achieve when working together to create these new wonderful visuals.
    • Now we have per-pixel hardcalls (?), more shadow spotlights working together; physically-based-rendering materials; lighting from atmosphere, star, personal, all working together consistently. We're able to see that all now.
    • Roughly how many landable planets in Odyssey? Billions. 20% more landables than in Horizons.
    • Range of planet/surface classifications that are landable is wider.
    • In Horizons: rocky, metal rich, high-metal, ice, and rocky ice; but because they somewhat used each others' resource/material graphs they often looked similar. With Odyssey that has now changed: more distinct look, terrain and materials on them, warms my heart a little. They'll look more like what they actually are.
    • What's the best part of your job? Who else gets to play on something of this scale, like a big tub of lego or mechano, and build something at the leisure of math, building planets.
    • Will large worlds feature tall mountains, deep craters? There's a reason why larger planets have flatter, shallower features because of gravitational strain. That's how the maths work out.
    • Crustal action (ha!), tectonics become less likely to occur on larger worlds too.
    • Rock scatter, how will that be different in Odyssey? It has changed quite a bit. In Horizons/Beyond that was random. For Odyssey there is the scatter system, sending data through a noise graph and collection of nodes to decide what goes where.
    • A wider range of things being put down in different patterns, densities, depending on the materials and resources for each world/surface.
    • Will atmospheric worlds will we see weather effects, dust patterns? The first ones, coming in Odyssey, we'll see dust effects visible on the surface.
    • How will the new planetary tech effect volcanism and volcanic formations? Fumeroles and similar will now placed using the scatter system on tectonic areas.
    • Planetary bases and installations, how does Stellar Forge place them? Various ways larger and smaller ones are placed on the surface. For larger ones a simple radial flattening of the surface. For Thargoid and Guardian they are stamped using an authored resource tailoring what goes where. Studio anecdotes of Dr Kay putting her face on the surface of worlds during development.
    • Have you hidden something like that in-game, because I would?! That would be telling.
    • In Odyssey, the stamp is improved to make placement much more interesting for the artists and CMDRs.
    • Do bases on ridges come about randomly or are they hand picked? There are various sites in Elite where buildings have been hand-placed. The majority of sites are found procedurally, places that are flat enough. The designers do like to put in some excitement.
    • Will atmospheric planets have different biomes at polar caps? Yes, but more accurately these are called geomes, and planets will have different geomes on them, especially at the polar caps.
    • Do you feel more fear about space as you come to learn about it, or less? When at university, as you learn about planets and universe you use more and larger scales and measurements, one can start disassociating with the models, tactile interactions - less scary... indescribable is a bad word to describe something, but that.
    • Will rings cast shadows on planets that they encircle? I genuinely don't remember. We were looking at that recently.

    Galnet News

Sirius Corporation has requested deliveries of consumables to Luyten's Star for the forthcoming diplomatic conference.

The Galactic Summit will take place in the Sirius system and last for three weeks, beginning on Thursday the 25th of February. It will be attended by leaders from the Alliance, Empire and Federation, plus representatives from independent systems.

Sirius Corporation has placed orders for these rare commodities: Eden Apples Of Aerial, Ethgreze Tea Buds, Gerasian Gueuze Beer, Giant Irukama Snails, Goman Yaupon Coffee, Karsuki Locusts and Lavian Brandy.

All shipments are to be delivered to Ashby City in the Luyten's Star system. They will then be ferried to Sirius before the conference begins.

CEO Li Yong-Rui discussed these preparations at a media event:

"We will provide all honoured delegates with a comfortable, luxurious environment. This includes offering the finest cuisine from across the galaxy."

Several journalists pointed out that both the Alliance and Empire had registered official complaints about the Galactic Summit's location being situated deep within Federal space. Li Yong-Rui responded:

"I assure you that the Sirius system is politically neutral territory, and Sirius Corporation remains independent from the Federation. I can personally guarantee the safety and diplomatic immunity of all attendees."

If the initiative is successful, Sirius Corporation will make the fully engineered long range fast boot class 5 Frame Shift Drive available for purchase at all human technology brokers.

Each tier reached will further reduce the resources required for acquiring the module in the first two weeks of availability, starting on the 26th of February 3307.

    • Datamined Wake Exceptions base requirements 18, reduced by two for each tier above Tier 1.
    • Tellurium base requirements 26, reduced by four for each tier above Tier 1.
    • Electrochemical Arrays base requirements 26, reduced by four for each tier above Tier 1.
    • Chemical Processors base requirements 28, reduced by four for each tier above Tier 1.

If the initiative is successful, Sirius Corporation will gift the module and a permanent Sirius system permit to the top 75% of pilots. The module will be placed in storage at the Ashby City starport in the Luyten's Star system by the 26th of February 3307.

    • System = Luyten's Star

How Much of This Game is Just Sitting in Super Cruise?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 10:11 AM PST

I kind of hope I am doing something wrong. I just recently left the beginning area, which I had a lot of of fun in. The travel times were short and there were a lot of pirates to shoot. I recently left though, and I am getting missions that have objectives or low res sites that are literally minutes away. For example, I am creating this post while super cruising to a mission signal. Is this a big part of this game? Just sitting and waiting? I've been loving almost everything about this game, but holy shit this really bad. It would suck to have all of the amazing things about this game ruined by this one terrible aspect of the game. Is there at least a part I can buy later, or anything I can do to not have to deal with these 4+ minute super cruise distances? If not than I really don't think I could get into this game, which is a bummer.

A guide to unlocking the Guardian FSD Booster

    Posted: 17 Feb 2021 09:57 PM PST

A guide to unlocking the Guardian FSD Booster

    The Guardian FSD Booster's Symbol

This is a comprehensive guide to unlocking the Guardian FSD Booster This will primarily be helpful to those who haven't done any guardian-related unlocks but may be found helpful by people who have not unlocked the Booster in particular.

For reference, we'll be using the Guardian Site in Synuefe PX-J c25-8, as it's the closest site to the bubble with a module blueprint. It is about 660ly from Sol, which means that you may want to have a decent jump range on the ship you take there, but this isn't necessary.

Note that you may want to visit all these sites in Solo Mode, to prevent other people from messing with your run/getting ganked.

    Ship loadout

    • Decent jump range (The trip becomes bearable with ~25ly). You can just A grade your FSD and D grade everything else on a dbx and you should easily get more than this.
    • Point defense turrets on the TOP surfaces of your ship (these will shoot down sentinel missiles)
    • Multiple SRVs (At least 2, though I sometimes run 4 just in case I need to self destruct a couple)
    • The rest is up to personal preference though I always take a medium ship (I use my Krait Mk.2) because I'm not fully sure if it's easy to land a large ship near the site

Materials For the unlock (you should have all of these by the end of this post):

    • 1x Guardian Module Blueprint Fragment
    • 21x Guardian Technology Components
    • 21x Guardian Power Cells
    • 24x Focus Crystals
    • 8x HN Shock Mounts

Okay, if you've got a ship fitted out, go ahead and fly out to the site (Look for planet 7A, when you get within 1k ls of the planet, a POI will show up under your left-hand panel), and stake out a landing spot. There are multiple areas with flat surfaces that are suitable for landing so just take your pick. But try to land within a kilometer from the site, because this will allow your point defense turrets to work their magic on the sentinel missiles.

Now it's important to note, if you meet a sentinel, don't panic. They may look scary but they are completely harmless. If one comes up (and you will meet four/five sentinels in this site), just stop, get into the turret, put full pips to weapons, and fire at it until its hull drops to zero. They will fire plasma back at you but you can easily take that, and the missiles will, more often than not, be taken care of by your point defenses. When running this site in solo mode, you will meet sentinels either one at a time or two at a time when you activate the first two pylons (more details on this later).

Before you start running the site, take a look at this map:

A screenshot of the Guardian site, original credit to u/cold-n-sour, with a few of my own edits made.

    Map Key

    • Red circles mark pylons that need to be shot in the glowing spot to charge them. To start the process, you need to go to the two pylons closest to each other (marked with a red "1"). After this, the pylons will rise out of the ground as you approach them, and each of them will be accompanied by a sentinel which you can shoot down.
    • After that's done, shoot one of the pylons marked in green and scoop up the relic that falls out.
    • Then go to that terminal thingy (near the two red circles that are closest to each other and jettison it from your SRV's cargo hold.
    • The data terminal will be active in a few seconds, and you can lock on and scan it with your data link scanner
    • The blue circles can be visited after you collect the module blueprint. These represent pylons that contain Guardian Technology Components. You need 21 of these for the blueprint, so you will have to do one re-log. Drive near each of the pylons and shoot at the "Destructible panel" contacts that show up on your scanners. Refer to u/cold-n-sour's guide on collecting these materials from this exact site here
      • Mind that when you finish activation by jettisoning the relic from your cargo hold, more sentinels will spawn. If you do not want to deal with them, you can just log out to the main menu, log back in and then run the site, though you will still run into a couple of sentinels.
    • You also need 21 guardian power cells, which are common in the other panels around the site.

    A guardian relic

    A Guardian Technology Component

    A Guardian Power Cell

This concludes the guardian materials you will need to pick up from this site. Before you leave, make sure that you have: 1x Guardian Module Blueprint Fragment, 21x Guardian Technology Components, and 21x Guardian Power Cells.

Now for the human manufactured materials. The meta for manufactured materials at the time of writing is going to systems, finding HGEs (High-Grade Emissions), dropping down on these signal sources, and collecting materials. This is a very effective way of getting G4 and G5 materials for engineering/tech broker unlocks. To speed up the process, get to a system's nav beacon and scan it, it'll give you detailed descriptions of all the signal sources in a system, without making you use the FSS to scan them all. Remember to have collector limpets to make your job easier. This is generally possible in populated systems so you're gonna have to make the trek back to the bubble.

Additionally, if you want to visit another neat place while working towards the booster, head on over to Dav's hope in the Hyades Sector DR-V C2-23 system. It is located on planet A5. For this site, I surface scanned the site and then went for the human POI on the planet. (I'm not entirely sure if it shows up without mapping it, so I'd advise taking a DSS with you, just in case). Here there's a comms uplink and a loop you can make collecting manufactured materials. You can do a loop around it, relog, and do another run. Do this as many times as you need to get materials.

Though do remember that if you collect a lot of higher-grade materials you can trade them down for lower-grade ones at a material trader (Manufactured in this case). So don't just collect "Exquisite Focus Crystals" because they're the G5 equivalent for Focus Crystals and then spend hours together trying to gather materials. Any material is fair game for being traded.

You can use this Inara link to find a material trader that's closest to you. Select the "Material Trader" checkbox and enter the system you're currently in and it'll give you a list of the traders near you. The first column on Inara represents the type of material trader the system has. Make sure that you're heading to a Manufactured material trader for the purpose of the FSD booster.

Once you have 24x Focus Crystals, go to a high-tech system and purchase 8 units of HN Shock Mounts. You can use this link to find HN Shock Mounts near you. Enter the commodity, your current system, and navigate to the "Exports" tab.

Great! You're done collecting materials! The only thing left now is to head to a Tech Broker and unlock your FSD booster. Again, Inara is your best friend. Using this link, choose the option "Technology Broker" this time, and enter your current system again. You're looking for a Guardian Tech Broker. The Broker type (Human/Guardian) can be found in the first column. When you're at the station you picked, go to the Contacts tab in station services, find the Technology Broker, and unlock the FSD booster (If you have all the materials, it will be visible while the rest of the modules will be grayed out).

The Tech Broker Screen. Shown is a Human Tech Broker, though the Guardian One will look similar.

Now you can head to outfitting and equip your booster. Safe travels! o7

    Why I won't do this week's CG

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 12:09 PM PST

As a preface, just a little roleplaying here. I am not trying to insult or anyone, or tell them what to do.

So, this week's CG is something I feel the community has been asking for. I've heard a bit about this dual engineered FSD, and I bet a lot of people are excited to get it.

I refuse to participate. No one seems to have noticed what the CG is exactly. We are providing rare commodities for the Galactic Summit. Politicians will be living in luxury right after we just fought the Fed's war for them.

This is one of my big issues with politicians. What's even more disturbing is that the community will blindly cater to them, so they can get 1, very specific, module.

Anyone else feel this way, or is it just me?
