    Alpha Phase 2 is now available for testing and feedback

    @EliteDangerous: "We are aware that server access for the Alpha phase 2 is taking longer for some players. We are working to get this resolved as soon as possible." (1:35pm UTC)

    @EliteDangerous: "The Alpha phase 2 servers should now be available to all commanders." (2:05pm UTC)

    @EliteDangerous: "We are aware some players have access to the Artemis suit and the Plasma weaponry in Phase 2. These are not ready for use and will be removed later today. If you have already bought them please refund them to avoid losing credits or being kicked from the server."

    Phase Two: Combat (8th Apr onwards)

    • Open up 20LY of space for travel
    • Players can now purchase ships
    • Manticore Dominator combat suit available for purchase
    • Faction conflicts will be enabled
    • Frontline Solutions available
    • Missions for neighbouring systems available, including trading with settlements and POIs

    Phase One: First Steps (29th Mar to 8th Apr)

    • New Commander issued for every participant
    • In a single star system to maximise player interaction
    • Remlok Maverick scavenger suit available for purchase
    • Access to Takada and Kinematic weapon sets
    • Apex Interstellar available for player travel
    • Variety of activities available including salvage and collect/delivery missions.

    Alpha ends on 30th April

     


    Known Issues

    • Players will experience a crash when inviting others to 'Teams' whilst on foot – hotfix imminent
    • Whilst on foot, players unable to select a side in a Conflict Zone via their Comms panel – this is not an issue if players use Frontline Solutions, or select a side whilst still in their ship
    • In Conflict Zones, Victory credits shown are incorrect (too low)
    • When in 'Teams' and in a hangar, players may experience 'invisible' host ship
    • Player models may move through counters if sprinting, when they interact with a vendor or terminal
    • Collection mission objective may only update for one person in the instance
    • When in the 'Long distance planner', selecting your ship and moving around the galaxy UI will soft-lock the player upon exiting
    • Unable to meet up: If you are having issues meeting up, return to the front end and try again
    • Oculus Rift HMD does not display the game
    • When a crime has been cleared, it is still shown in the authority contact at the social space terminal
    • 'Complete Missions' button may not work at station terminals
    • Players may find that selecting to transfer consumables from the ship's inventory does not work

    Please note that as this is an Alpha phase, a large amount of optimisation work for the final release is yet to be completed. These specifications are subject to change as Frontier move toward release.

    My first Frontline Solutions battle was some of the most fun I've ever had in Elite

    TL;DR: Frontline Solutions feels like being dropped into a high-stakes battlefield, and it's a blast.

    When I walked up to the Frontline Solutions desk at Savitskaya Vision, I noticed there was a civil war raging between a Federation democratic political party and a Federation corporation. Wanting to do my part, I signed up to fight against the corporation's attempted expansion. I rode the elevator down to the Frontline Solutions' hangar and boarded the waiting ship.

    As the Vulture serving as a dropship approached my destination, I found myself hanging in a harness much like one you'd wear on a rollercoaster. Below me there was no floor, and as we were on the dark side of the moon orbiting an enormous blue gas giant there was scant light to be had. I saw the running lights and strobes of an enormous Anaconda finishing a lazy loop around the abandoned settlement meters below me. The harness unlatched, and I dropped to the ground.

    When I landed, I was surrounded by AI mercenaries my HUD identified as friendlies. They had a wide variety of weapons, including some plasma weaponry. What ensued was an incredibly tense battle, with reinforcements being dropped in by both sides throughout the conflict. My flashlight (and those of the other combatants) provided the only illumination beyond the facility's emergency lighting and a few scattered fires.

    I jumped from roof to roof, using my laser rifle to strip shields and switching to my assault rifle to finish enemies off. At one point while I fought out in the open to help my allies wipe out an entrenched group of enemies, a distant foe precisely fired single rounds of plasma at us from a catwalk. I got into several heated close-quarters firefights as my teammates and I tried to take and maintain control of the control points (glowing circles you enter to capture), and by the end of the battle I had used all of my energy cells.

    My suit's power went out and the sound went dull and distant. I could see my teammates firing their weapons but the thin atmosphere barely transmitted any noise, now that my suit was no longer synthesizing sounds effects. My flashlight went out and most of the world around me was pitch black. I hid inside of a burning building, relying on its atmosphere to keep my suit's oxygen reserves topped off. Eventually we won the firefight, and I called a shuttle. I sprinted from my shelter to the shuttle, making it with about 30% of my oxygen left. I returned to the station triumphant, and turned in $300k work of combat bonds at the same counter that had dispatched me to the front.

    I hopped in my Viper and set off the nearby RES site to see how the new graphics look, and I realized that Odyssey has opened up the world of Elite in a way I never thought possible. The gameplay is inherently immersive. Writing this post felt like roleplay, but it was literally just an account of what I did over the past hour or so. It isn't perfect and there's room for polish, of course, but phase 2 of Odyssey's alpha is nothing short of extraordinary.
