Pilots Trade Network stance on the current carrier trade exploit

    Posted: 25 May 2021 08:40 AM PDT

Ahoy CMDRs! The Pilots Trade Network has been aware that for several days a bug has existed with Elite: Odyssey which allows carrier owners to duplicate items from their ship or carrier inventory. So far we have chosen to remain quiet on the subject, not wanting to draw attention to the exploit, but it's clear that the cat is well and truly out of its proverbial bag and it's time to make our stance clear:

Using the carrier duping bug is clearly and incontrovertibly an exploit and no P.T.N carrier or carrier owner has ever or will ever be involved in it.

We at the P.T.N are absolutely in favour of amassing vast quantities of space cheddar and are dedicated to helping independent pilots do this in a variety of fun and creative ways that stay firmly within the bounds of intended game mechanics. For example our last Booze Cruise generated over 352 billion credits of profits for our haulers over the space of just two days and was made possible by the hard work and dedication of our carrier owners and management team.

Given that using this new duping bug is so clearly an exploit, we would not be surprised if Frontier takes action such as removing earned credits from accounts of users who have exploited the bug (as they did with the Rockforth Fertiliser incident), and given the egregious nature of the exploit would further not be surprised if carrier owners who are deliberately abusing the bug face more severe punishment.

However, regardless of what action Fdev does or does not take (they've got a lot on their plate right now after all!) the Pilots Trade Network will continue to operate within the bounds of Interstellar Law and within the boundaries of established game mechanics to ensure that all our carrier owners and independent haulers can rest assured that the vast piles of gold upon which they sleep were earned both legitimately and enjoyably.

We want all independent pilots therefore to be aware that many of the non-P.T.N carrier trades you see advertised on Reddit offering enormous profits per ton are taking advantage of this exploit and could well result in action by Frontier.

That is why you will continue to see P.T.N carriers operating the sorts of trades you are already used to at margins which are generous without being exploitative, and why you'll see within the next few days an exciting new opportunity for profit being announced on the P.T.N Discord.

    o7 CMDRs and fly safe!

Odyssey - Great looking atmospheric world. Looks even better on surface with a nice blue atmosphere.

Odyssey still needs a lot of work, but there's one thing it managed to achieve perfectly well - introducing a sense of terror

    Posted: 25 May 2021 03:31 AM PDT

Since the game was released, we were always behind a glass cockpit of our trustworthy vessel that served as a seperator between us and whatever was on the other side. The same principle applies to the SRV, whatever happens, we are still safe in our metal cage.

Every interaction with the outside world was indirect, be it combat, thargoids, guardian ruins. Even death felt less personal, because "it's the ship that got destroyed". With the launch of Odyssey, the tables have turned.

Let me tell about my little journey to a crash site on the night-side of some random moon. The crashed ship, the cargo, no traces of the pilot and a complete darkness. The only light source is my ship's or SRV's lights and my own flashlight. For the first time I need to leave my safe zone and interact with things in person. When I cut the panels with my cutter, I really have a feeling that I need to get things done and get out of here.

The absolute blackness, contrasting with twinkling stars on the night sky emphasizes the effect. The dead silence interupted my silent growls of my ship makes me feel uneasy. It's a very similar effect how horrors achieve the sense of fear in the player. I know there's nothing there in the darkness, but still I want to go back to my ship. I wonder if they eventually implement on-foot thargoids... That would enhance the feeling to the top.

There aren't any jumpscares, but the fear of the unknown and the feeling of loneliness makes the atmosphere of on foot gameplay really strong. Nothing separates us from the outside world anymore. We interact with it directly. With our own bare hands.

I believe, Frontier should built upon that feeling of terror, because it's the opportunity of making some really great gameplay and immersion.

The 'wanted' system is infuriating in Odyssey

    Posted: 25 May 2021 07:04 AM PDT

I take an illegal mission from the largest faction to dunk on a faction with 2% influence, I go do the deed and get out nice and clean.

The settlement alarms don't even go off, that's how clean this was. Guy didn't even turn around, popped him in two shots and got out. No-one discovered the body because it was on a roof... I lured him there deliberately away from other personnel because I was told there can be no collateral damage

So why on earth am I now "wanted" and only able to get anonymous access to the station? I feel when the mission is handed in, at least lower it to a regular bounty rather than full on notoriety/wanted status if I haven't done anything except the mission... you'd think a faction with 52% influence would have some influence over how their security are? Bribes?

Or at least let me continue to browse the mission board for other illegal missions, maybe from the same faction? Then my wanted status would be a badge of pride

    Now I have two choices:

    1) leave the system, find a factor, pay off the fine etc to get back (it's 1000 credits, not even worth it)

    2) Hand myself in to Detention, which involves a long trek back to the system.
