You're both Awesome, You both Suck, Quit Whining (An open letter to ED and SC Communities)

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 10:01 AM PDT

I once had a drill instructor who more or less said the above phrase after my battalion won the drill competition, but utterly failed by his standards and our previous performance in practice.

Our victory was rewarded with our final beating remedial PT session before graduating. That story informs this rant.

The flighty response of some ED players in response to Odyssey left me baffled, and even after playing some SC, still does.

I mean, SC is not only unfinished, it's practically unplayable; or so I'd heard.

So a few days I pledged myself an Aurora and spent some time in Mr. Roberts' Neighborhood.

I had also picked up Odyssey since I came back from a couple years' hiatus (Horizons kinda bored me and the endgame of ED has always felt feature-poor versus EVE)

I'm not far in either, so higher-mileaged players in both may have wildly different experiences.

Elites: Odyssey is still objectively more stable, playable and complete than SC, and it accepts more potato-ey computers than SC. Unless you have an idealogical problem with how Fdev handled the release, running away won't solve your problems. The backlash, fear, uncertainty, and doubt about this release is toxic and largely unfounded. This game is like a healthy marriage to an ugly asexual: It's all the things you need, but will always miss some things you want, and deserves none of the abuse you give it for it's shortcomings.

Fence Sitters and Deserters: Odyssey is/will be the greatest walking-flying-driving space arcade sim you ever played while waiting for SC to come out of alpha. Heck, with proper updates and management, the scope of the Elite galaxy might still win out. Enjoy it for what it is, not what it could or should have been.

Star Citizens: You have the most beautiful British Spaceport Walking Simulator and Immersive Space Arcade Simulator ever made. One day the Monoliths will show up and ignite Jupiter and give birth to an actually playable Star Child. Until then, your game still feels like the Pyramid Scheme that is Project Entropia, and about as technically developed as Farlight Explorers or any one of the other dozen half-finished EA Steam space games. This game is like being married to a nymphomaniac super model with a personality disorder: It's everything you want riddled with hidden red flags and jagged edges that could be fixed but only if \it* wanted to and took some time out from its ambitions and addictions to do so.*

Fdev: Becoming publicly traded is not an excuse to cut corners, ignore your community, ship too early, etc. You're still at a small enough scale where your customer base can pull out from under you in a way that gives them influence beyond your shareholders.

RSI: FFS just halt the feature creep for a like a year, hunker down on bugfixing, stability, and fleshing out the half-features currently in the game and get the word Alpha out of your product title.

Personally, I own both now, so I'll play as much Elite as I want and as much SC as I can tolerate.

6+ years in, my take Elite Dangerous Odyssey

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 03:37 PM PDT

The core driving force in Elite Dangerous is spaceships (barring any personal rpg efforts) and the game mechanics to get spaceships is to explore, trade, fight, and mine so you can make credits. You take those credits and buy better ships and modules then repeat. I love this mechanic and have for many years.

I see Odyssey as a bolt on FPS module that offers a 5th way to earn credits (to buy... spaceships) and it's connected to Elite via a thin blue tube next to a flight of stairs or elevator on my spaceship.

My issue is that I am out of spaceships and modules to buy, I have billions of credits and there is nothing left for me to buy. I have no need, except the first few days of fun, for a 5th way to earn credits. Other than enjoying the view of my spaceship from a person sized pov, Odyssey has added little value to the game for me and my desire to experience spaceships.

Speaking in terms of game mechanics, the Elite Dangerous game is a 400 billion star systems wide and about 25mm deep pancake, always has been, it's up to us to enjoy it. Odyssey just added another 1mm of depth.

A view of Odyssey and Letter to FDev

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 06:44 AM PDT

I am writing this purely as an opinion while I eat my lunch at my desk.

I like many here is really enjoy the gameplay of Odyssey (when it works smoothly), I play using GeForce Now so not getting as many optimization issues as others, however. It does feel sometimes that when you want to share a positive experience it currently tends to get flooded with criticism about the games development.

I would argue from my observation that the majority of persistent criticisms revolve around several key topics such as wanting features that are not currently possible, especially within a timeline that's come to be expected, and the incredibly poor system optimization which was in this instance poorly managed and implemented, for example: Occlusion Culling is an essential feature needed for consoles and lower powered systems that has existed for over a decade yet upon Odysseys release was not enabled. This makes little to no logical sense beyond lack of quality control and systems management, and as a lead project coordinator would be embarrassed to have made that mistake.

Finally, the community managers have been largely placed in the firing line by the developers. They wanted to do interviews with the developers but that fell apart, they wanted to be more transparent but the developers are not engaging them as I feel the approach they have adopted is to lock the door and only come out when it's 'finished' allowing only select developers to appear on stream.

The community managers are great, and can be amazing if given the opportunity to pull from the roster and speak to their colleagues.

So to answer the question to why has the community become increasingly angry. Many players are frustrated by a rolodex of fixable issues both new and old and have learned through conditioning from previous community managers, forum posts, and a tight lipped development team that by being aggressively vocal is seemingly the only way to get something out.

I for one am frustrated at David Braben for not being more hands on in controlling this issue, his community managers are being punished for a development teams lack of transparency. Tell us if a new ship are in the works even if they get scrapped, talk to us about the Scorpion SRV that has been uncovered in the game files even if it gets scrapped, explain to us how things are going to improve and be honest about the challenges you are facing. FDev can talk about the future of Elite without disrupting the lore, lore is fictional and the community knowing what's to come or what's not working isn't going to destroy the lore. Equally FDev doesn't need to be concerned with CIG, players are players and not football spectators, our allegiance isn't tied to one particular party, we will go to those that fulfill our wants at that moment. Allow the game to become Elite Dangerous, but let us know what you want Elite Dangerous to be.

    Transparency instills confidence.

We don’t know what we’re asking for

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 04:01 PM PDT

TL;DR don't ask for features, ask for gameplay.

Braben said (in the usual cryptic and not committing way) that they are probably going to deliver new features following our feedbacks.

    It won't happen.

BUT, if it does happen, which are our feedbacks?

Mainly I see people asking for: ship interiors, new ships and new srvs (and VR, but that's another story).

I've been here since alpha and it looks to me like the old "give us orrery map" story all over again. If you don't know it, a few years ago a part of the community (backed by content creators like Obsidian Ant) was asking for this "feature" to be added. They had good ideas for that map: gameplay loops, qol changes… but when frontiers finally delivered, it was a barebone and embarassing mess that I'm sure 99% of the community never used.

What's the point? It's always the same story since wings, cqc, powerplay, bgs, empire vs federation war, humans vs thargoids war, planetary landing, fleet carriers, engineers, squadrons, multi crew, etc etc.

Minimum-viable-product. No effort, no ideas, no game loops. Grind, as a best case scenario.

Please, stop asking things that they won't be able to deliver: ship interiors will only be a door opening, a short corridor and than "press F to sit". That's it. No gameplay, no purpose, no fun. Another Orrery Map.

Ask for gameplay: they have a lot of stuff on the table; they simply need to connect the dots. Unleash the war between factions, asking cmdrs to really take a side (or not) and face consequences. Make open play more appealing by increasing rewards or impact on bgs/powerplay. Let squadrons decide the future of minor factions, own assets… or nothing of what I've said; do something else.

But ask them to put a game in the tech demo, or what you will offer frontiers is just another "promised land" to sell before closing this mess of a game.
